whilst a minor by a special act of the Legisla
ture. But the law, which yields its rewards

charms for the ardent, ambitious and adventu
ress young Shivers. At the first call which
Texas made for volunteers to assist her in her
struggle for independence, ho abandoned his
offico and marched with a company raised in
Columbus to join those who had rushed from
the States to the rescue of the infant Republic.
Returning to Georgia when the struggle was
over, he soon afterwards removed to Grand
Gulf, Miss., where ho was again allured from
his professional pursuits by the prospect of act
ive service nnd stirring adventure in the war
with Mexico. Having raised a company of
mounted men, it was attached to the regiment
of Texas Rangers, commanded by the oelebrated
Jack Hayes, and bore’s conspicuous part in all
