1 bare often been told that every man can

ttl l tbe reason in, they have undertaken t

lU» purpose they need loo many horses. Tbe
•nor acres have taken off the profits of the rich
,-credit and Ugh prison for supplies and
jj. prices of crops, have kept Iho people in a
And many can neither have rich land
tor fine stock. And this brings me to the anb-
„,i of fertilizers, which baa tieen so much dis-
ruwd in all your agrirnltnral literature, and in
roar meetings and conventions ; and for which
roe bar* paid out such an enormous portion of
j oir reeelpls for cotton.
. I have urged the iuereaso of stock raining, and
4uck penning, and husbanding tbe products as
,Aescs of fertilizing land. I wish now to im-
prros distinctly npon yon that aUmulatiag your
!, u ,l is one thing; enriching it in another. Both
an) good in their ptaoea, and wM not do for the
after. If yon bad boon sick and were weak and
emaciated a skillful physician wonld prescribe
. tonic. Hat no doctor could bo found who
would rely on thstslono; bat be wonld diroot
lo be given healthful food in suitable quantities
-upon the two yon wonld grow and thrive, and
regain yottr health and strength. The same is
true to a great extent of your failing lauda. They
are, doubtless, benefltted by stimulants, bat
tb,y need food more, and will reoeivo greater
hem fit from it. .
I wonld not be understood as discouraging
tbe judicious investment of uionoy in genuine
commercial manure*, but wonld impress the
paramonnt importance of producing on the
(arm those that are substantial and supply food
for the land. If any fanner will rnako the ex
periment, be will find that with the same money
•pent for fertilizing articles from abroad, judi
ciously spent at home, he ean prodnoe a much
greater value of and n more reliable manure.
Take a man that spends $1000 for guano. Let
lim expend tbe money at home, by employing
• Land and cart to save his lot manure and pen
it every day, and in putting up and manipula-
ting from snv resource be has npon bis farm—
and be will find that his manure pens in one
year will not only pay him a larger profit than
ihe guano, but r< suit in substantial improve
ment to bis land.
One of the strongest objections to Ibis mutbod
of fertilizing is tbe immense lalior of battling it
out tnd applying it, which is a real difficulty,
i specially so long os yon run tho present sched
ule of planting so mnch land. Bat it is one
which may lw reduced by erecting tho pens
soar tbe spot where it is to be applied, and at
such limes as afford leianre from tbe pressing
farm work, or by having tbe work of making
rnannie in tbe hands of persons employed for
that purpose. It will oost money, as it docs to
bring it from Ihe islands of tho ocean, manipu
late and apply it.
Hut there is a method of manuring within tho
reach of every person who has a surplus of open
laud, and not subject to the objection above
•tided. It L to make ovary acre prodnoe its own
uiunn.'e, by planting such crops as derive tbeir
support mainly from tbe atmosphere, and tnrn.

Ihe Kan Francisco Bulletin publishes a pri
vate letter from an English lady of rank, who
accompanied a Conn teas Blncber on a visit to
Yaizin, the eonntry seat of Prinoe Bismarck, In
ronsoqtionoe of this unceremonious invitation
(rom the Chancellor: *‘I say. Countess, mind
yon bring Mias with yon in July. I like
girls who have the frankness to let me know
tkst they think me an old humbug.” The fol-
loving m an extract from this letter:
The rattling noise of tho carriage in tho eonrt
and the baying of a band of watch doga brought
the Princess von Biamark, her daughter and
two maids in Pomeranian oostumea to the door.
In every respect the Prinoeas Is in koepiuf
with tho mansion. She is s lady on, I shook
aay, the wrong tide of sixty, bnt fresh and come
ly withal. Placid women keep their good looks
far into old age. Have yon ever noticed wbat
a peachy bloom there Is in the cheek of a sil
ver-haired Quakeress ? Princess von Bismarck
has thin becoming bloom. She is quite an un
pretending person, both in dress and manners,
and does not give herself any trouble to remind
people of her boing a great man's wife. Ton
must not fancy bocanso of her plain simple
ways that she is vulgar or nnintelligent As tho
foabion is in her native pfbvinco, she reoeived
scientific education in girlhood, and on leaving
school devoted horeelf to domestic economy. I
wish yon eonld taste the game she pots, or the
hams that are enred, tho sausage* that are man
ufactured, tbe eider that is bottled and the fish
that are dried under her anperintendenoe at
Vanin. The best part of tbe provisions con
sumed in tbe Chancellor's town-house oome
from bis Pomeranian eatato.
In the good, old fashioned style, Madam Bis-
morck baa a Imnch of keys hnng to her girdle.
They depend from a gold chatelaine her bus-
band picked np somewhere in Franoe. When
sitting in the drawingroom, or superintending
the farm women at thair work, her knitting
needles are always go jpg. Everywhere in the
sitting rooms, in tbe bed rooms one perceives,
in knilted quilts and curtains, netted msssacan,
embroidered pillows, evidence of her msnnal
skill and honsewifely activity. Being an old
friend of the oonnteaa, she kissed me. When I
was introdnoed she addressed me a hearty wel
come in German, ller words bad a mothorly
ring in them as she kindly said to her daughter,
"You'll take care to be a good slater to the fren-
leiu while ah* is at Vanin.” Then laughing,
she told us that tbe nonntees (Mile. Bismarck)
wasengaged, bnt as her ‘‘intended" was with her
she would not be too mnch occupied in think
ing of him to attend to tho visitors, of whom I
learned at dinner there were no less than thirty
m the bonne when we arrived.
Coffee was laid in the drawing-room. Bat
Otto said that would never do. So ha ordered
a regular lunch, at which tea, with thick freah
cream figured. This repast was a good deal in
the nature of a Scotch breakfast, for, in addi
tion to cold roast mutton, there were thin, hard-
baked oat meal aoones, honey, preserves, and a
