W* were sorry to learn yesterday that Mr.
Albert Birdsong, a universally known young
man of thia city, was lying at the point of death
at the residence of Mrs. Freeman. He is sick
with that fell destroyer of the human race, con

recovery.
Shobt Wxkjht.—A m.ehinirf 0 f mo Central
Railroad shop, celled on ns last night to say
that there was a grocer, on Fourth street, who
had just sold him a pound of aanaaga, that
weighed only 13| ounces on four different pair

between a policeman and a negro boy that had
been doing a little stealing. The negro made
fast time, and bnt for the fact that he was
“headed off and nabbed” by a citizen, that po
liceman would never have got nearer him than
when the raee opened.
WanauT Cura.—The people living beyond
Walnnt creek are trying to raise money enough
to put downs pontoon bridge until a regular
one can be built They estimate the coat of it
at $200, and are calling opon the citizens of
Uaeon to help them. Whon that bridge is put

War They Want Gold.—For some weeks
past Messrs. J. B. Ross A 8. T. Coleman have
been offering the highest market rates for gold
coin, and it has earned some persons to wonder
what these extensive dealers in dry goods want
with so much gold. The curious will find a
foil and satisfactory answer in onr advertising
oolumns this morning. Ths ladles are particu
larly interested in the explanation, and they
should all read it. 1 v ^

departments of the State will meet in this city
to sonfer together in regard to tho recent deci
sion of the Supreme Court, on tho subject of

they undertake.
Snoot iso Arrant.—On Tuesday morning last,
a difficulty occurred in the suburbs of this city
between a Mr. Williams and his son-in-law Doc.
Ivey, which resulted in.the shooting of the for
mer by tho latter. The affair grew out of the
destruction of some of Ivey's property by Wil
liams, and when Ivey remonstrated, Williams
assailed him with an ax. Ivey then ran into his
house and, gotting bis gun (a small carbine)
shot bis assailant, tbo ball entering the fleshy
part of the thigh, inflicting a severe, but not
fatal wound. Ivey is jpitified by those who wit
nessed the affair.

Musis ron the Stats Faib.—Oar spirited and
live young Mayor, in order to have rli things
attractive and interesting daring the great State
Fair, ia negotiating for the services of Theodore
Thomas’ famous Orchestra, one of the beat
band of musicians in America. It will be worth
five dollars a day to every man who has a soul
in him, to listen to the enchanting strains of
mn9ic from this band, if there was nothing else
to see or hear daring the Fair. We earnestly
hope His Honor will succeed in getting the
band, for of all things elso flue mnsio is the
thing to amuso a large crowd. Should the Or
chestra consent to visit ns, it could more than
clear the expenses of the trip hero and back
home, by giving one or two concerts. And,
then, all of ns want them to come.
A New Finn and a Stbona Team.—We call
special attention this morning to the advertise
ment of Messrs. Jaa. Campbell and L B. Eng
lish, who, under the firm name of Campbell A
English, have commenced the wholesale liquor
business at the new store, No. 15G Cherry street,
between Carhart A Card's and Seymonr, Tins
ley <fc Co.’s. The30 gentlemen are both well
and most favorably known in all the country
that trades at this i larkct, as wide-awake, ac
tive, courteous, and thoroughly square business
men, who will redeem every promise they make.
We predict for them a big trade, and evon wider
popularity than they now possess. No stronger
business team has been harnessed np in Macon
for a long time. They deserve success and will
win it, or we are greatly deceived. They will
keep a heavy stock of liquors of every descrip
tion on hand all the time, and sell for the
shortest living profit Give them a call.
Fall Fashions.—On exhibition now some of
the most recherche goods for gents’ wear ever
brongbt ont Mr. O. H. Bazbd made the se
lections himself in New York and offers to make

had in the city, and at reasonable prices.
State Faib—Gold, Gold !—In reply to the
many inquiries regarding our buying such large
quantities of gold, wo would elate fair-lj to the
public that it is to cancel invoices of goods im
ported this season. We have in store the larg
est variety of black and colored silks and satins
ever brought to this market, and are willing to
loose the discount paid for gold, that the ladies
of Georgia may furnish themselves with the
beat black and colored silks, at a lower figure
than they were ever before offered. Please try

there is in Georgia to prepare meals for his pat

oysters, fish, poultry, and, in fact, everything
good and seasonable to eat will always be kept
on hand and served np in tip-top style. Ed. has

NIGHT DISPATCHES.
New Yobs, September 20.—The Post loams
on good authority that early in tho summer, city
vouchers for $3,000,000 were stolen from the
Comptroller's office. The Mayor and other
officers outside the Comptroller's office only
recently learned cf the abstractoin. The city
auditor, through whose hsnds these vouchers
passed, wns a son of Connolly, who is now in
Europe.
It is a fact that the vouchers were missing.
However, it was believed, for good reasons, by
the editors of the Evening Post early in the
present month, and wai referred to in a leading
article as a subject of inquiry. It now appears
that the condition of tho Comptroller's records
is even worse than wav supposed. The city
auditor, through whose hands these vouchers
pasted, and who was responsible for their ac
curacy, was J. Townsend Connolly, son of the
Comptroller. He has since left this country
and gone to Europe, and Ur. Herring has taken
his place.
Up to time of going to press wo have not
been able to learn whether the vouchers were
missed immediately after Connolly's son’s de
parture, nor have we any faeta which directly
tend to imp'icate him in theft. It was said
some days ago by men who knew that these
vouchers were missing, that it was designed in
the Comptroller's office to mannfactnre new
vouchers in place of these, bnt we do not find
any evidence that snch is the case bn; it is be
lieved Mayor Hall will mako official nse of this
robbery as well as of tho latter one to the utmost
for the purpose of driving Mr. Connolly from
his office. The departiment of parks has made re
quisition upon Comptroller Connolly for the
money required to meet payments now due
upon the pay rolls of the parks. This is a distinct
recognition of Connolly’s; right to perfoim the
duties of Comptroller.
