a bead of the arerage sine in women. The face
and bead are thoseof a moderate blonde. The

one should notiea her on the street, wonld be
that of a married lady about ‘-*7 years of ago,
and who wonld seem a woman of intelligence,
of fair attractions, and of moderate self-posses-
sion. In fino, at a curaory glance, she would
be placod as tho wife of a merchant, and as a
woman who had polished herself by much con
tact with the world. In the course of onr con
versation there came into view qualities in her
fvatnres which will be noted at tho time of their
occurrence.

OUB CONVERSATION.
Sho hesitated a moment as I concluded my
announcement of apoasihle intention to write a
letter which l>y some result might possibly get
into into romo newspaper, glanced at me with a
severely searching glance, and thon said:
“I don't object to a truthful lotler at all; it is
the other kind that I fear."
‘*1 assure yon, madam, if I write one at all, it
will lie the facts precisely as I see them. I am
In soarch of truth, and not in search of a sen
sation like tho Bohemians of the press who bunt
yon np, and who write, not wbat they see or hear,
bnt sneh things as will most attract the atten
tion of their readers."
‘•Well, I only ask you to do mo justice. Do
yon know n Dr. Blunrt, or somo suoh name, in
Chicago?"
“I do not. What of him ?'*
“He carno to me under somo pretense, and
then published a most abominable account of
onr interview.”
“I never saw it.”
‘•Well, it was ontrogoons. If I am ever free,
I havo an acoonnt to settle with him. I shall
visit Chicago, and ho will havo to prove what
lie said or bo shall suffer, if there is any law
which will roach him.”
“I don't think yon need worry much about
him. I never board of him, and I don't believe
be is of any eonseqnonoe, anyway.”
“It is strange," she said, “that I sbonld be so
persecuted by tho newspapers. There it not
one in Ban Francisco that will permit mo to con
tradict tho falsehoods that are going about. It
ia asserted that I havo a flood of visitors, while
the troth is that I see nobody except my child
and mother, nnloss they forcojtbemselvos npon

“What do yon think aro yonr chances in tho
fntnro?”
“I esn't tell, of course. But I think tho Su
premo Court cannot bnt givo me a new trial."
“ Is the Supreme bench composed of impar
tial men?”
“ Bo far as I know, it is.”
“Yon do not think you had a fair trial ?
“It was a perfect faroe. Judge Dwindle
wonld not give ns time to get onr witnesses
when trying for a new trial. \\p oould linvo
proved by several witnesses that one of tho
jnrymon had said I should hang if they pnt
him on tho jnry. Bnt the judge absolutely re
fused to allow timo to send for theso witness

“Do yon think him prejudiced ?”
“ Undoubtedly. You remember that he fined
a woman who applauded me. Well, men had
frequently applanded when things went against
me, and he took no notioo of it. Bnt as soon
as this woman applauded mo, ho ordered her
fined.
“ Why do you think ho waa so prejudiced ?”
“ I think it was from outside pressure. Mr.
Crittenden was connected with many of the
wealthiest and most influential families of the
State. Judge Dwindle has political aspirations
and yon roe how all this fnmily influence wonld

Here Mrs. Fair proceeded to relate some par
ticulars in tho domestic life of the judge, which
were not particularly complimentary to
and which, from her point of view, went to
ahow that the judicial bench is not beyond tbo
roach of a feminine influence whose origin is
not of a character greatly above that emanating
from the level of oonriesanahip.
It was now that I began to disoovor that tho
face had other characteristics which were latent
when her countenance was in repose. Now and
then, when she became warm with the recital,
roe calmness of her bine-gray eye became light
ed with a steely glow thst possessed a strong
magnetic powsr. In rest, her face was scarcely
above oommon-place; in action, faint blushes
lightened across her cheek, her eye deepened
and glowed with a strange fascination, and her
amilo teemed an emanation, a centre ofmagnet-
