Tux I'unxsi ii-uv or Toxic Stimciaxtb.—Some
snbetances have the power of infioendng tho
changes which go forward in tbe human tisanes,
without themeelvee taking any integral part in these
changes. Salt for instance, baatena transforms-
tion and waate, and conacqently creates tbo necoo-
aity for a more liberal diet; while, on the other
band, alcohol retards change and waste. On this
principle, Dr. Fircb, in liis Bitters, has furnished a
preparation having among ether properties that of
preserving both the mateiials and the forces of the
system; and in this, as ia otlior things, '*A penny
saved is a penny gained." Bnt it is not only in this
negative way that Dr. Fisch's remedy works for tha
inilding up of tho pbyaical man. While it holds
back Uio watting processes, it rpnra forward the
lUjfiug processes. It promotes tbo flow of the
iluQhtalivo juices in the month, tho stomach and
tbe liver; and Uma enables tbe system to utilize
more food—to mako more blood. The scriptural
assertion that “tbo blood thereof ia the life there
of," is the expression of a physiological fact: and
tbe amount of food which a man can oat with relish,
and digest, affords the exact measure and index of
tbo man’s strength. And when once Dr. Fisch's
remedy has given tbo start to an improvement in
this direction, tbo unaided energies of nature take
up tho work and cany it forward, anil Uma render
tbo amelioraUon permanent.

New Yoxx, October 17.—A Herald special
dated Gloucester, Mass., says that the schooner
Horton waa taken from the harbor of Greisboro,
Nova Scotia, by a party of men from Gloneester.
The Horton is now doe in Gloucester. It is
stated thst a British gunboat was sent in pur
suit. A schooner is now off Cape Ann with the
intention of recapturing the Horton. An
American gunboat has gone to prevent the re
capture, of the Horton in American waters. The
affair is believed to be of great gravity.
The revenue officers, supported by federal
soldiers, raided in the fifth ward, Brooklyn, at
six o'clock. There was little resistance, and the
party captured several illicit stills and othsr
property.

A Fox Chase.—Yesterday morning one of tho
foxes belonging to a aide show on the Fair

whole force of laborers snd lookers-on were in
full pursuit of it Rag-tag and bob-tail joined
in the chase, and such a hubbub as waa kicked
np one may imagine bnt cannot describe. Fi
nally the varmint was driven to seek shelter
under the Floral Hell, where it was captured,
snapping and snarling at all around, and re
tained to its old quarters.
Esnuxs To tuz State Fate.—As a large cam
ber of persona aro intending to exhibit at the
Fair, and are daily cxlliDg at the office of the
Secretary, in Hollingsworth block, to make en
tries, wo would notify them that the only place
where entries can be made is at tbe entrance
gate rooms of tho Fair Grounds. The person
who makes an entry, or an hnndred entries,
only pays $2 50, which bnvs, at the same time,
a ticket of admission to tho Fair. The price is
jost the same as if he did not exhibit, snd de
sired to purchase a season ticket. Mr. Andrew
Dnnn represents the city, and Mr. Johnson the
Society, in making entries.
Extba Foie.—W. P. Carlos, the suocessor of
Henry Ells, in his celebrated saloon and fancy
grocery seems determined to fully sustain its
old reputation, if not surpass it. Ho has now
introduced some exquisite Albany (N. Y.) ale
which wonld throw a New Yorker into perfoct
fits of ccstacy, and it gives sach general satis
faction that he intends to keep only that brand
hereafter. In tho way of fruits, Mr. Carlos
always keeps a fall supply on hand, and his
custom is so vory extensive that purchasers can
always obtain them fresh and nice. If you want
anything good in the eating and drinking line,
cooked or otherwise, giro Mr Carlos a call.
A SrLENDiD IxsntuMENT.—Messrs. Guilford
& Hill received yesterday, from the manufac
tory in St. Louis, a piano to be exhibited at tho
Fair, that is said to be tho finest instrument
ever bronght to Ibis city. These gentlemen are
also in receipt of a lot of musical instruments
which Ihey imported direct from Germany.
They expect in the future to import a greater
portion of their musical goods direct from
Europe, which will enable them to sell at much
lower rates than when the goods are purchased
in New York. Messrs. G. & H. sell their gooda
at a small profit, and any desiring musical to
strumenta of any kind should give them a call.
A “Steike”-isg Steech.—Yesterday morniog
onr attention was attracted to a crowd of negro
workmen, carpenters, painters, etc., gathered
in front of No. 3 Engino House, and to our
honored Mayor, standing up to his buggy, ap
parently listening to statements of several of
them as to an alleged outrage committed upon
them. After a number of them had spoken,
Mayor Huff briefly and very mneb to tho point
responded, and as his reply covers Ihe whole
ground, wo givo a report of it. “My men,”
said he, “yen bring before me a complaint that
last evening, on passing out of the gates at tho
Fair Grounds, your day’s work being finished,
the police officers mauo a cursory examination
of the persons of several of you, and yon
assume that this action on their part was in
suiting to you. Now, a simple statement of
tho facts of the csbo should satisfy yon as to
the propriety of their action. For several days
past, some of tho colored mechanics employed
on the Gronnds havo mode complaints that their
tools, ele., bad been stolen; snd tbeso com
plaints had grown so numerous, and the loss of
time snd property so heavy, that necessity re
quired some action to be taken to the premises.
As the larger part of you were strangers in the
city, whose character were unknown, it was
found impossible to suspect any particular in
dividuals and “shadow” them to detection; so
tbe simplest plan was adopted, and the officers
were instructed to mingle with tho ont-going
crowd of workmen when tho knocking-off bell
rang, and endeavor to discover who it was that
was committing these wholesale and annoying
(holts. What was tho resnlt ? Why, one man
was found with half a keg of nails he bad “But-
Ierized”—several were found with whole pack
ages of screws, and quantities of material, etc.,
were found strewed on tho wayside, where they
had been dropped.. Now, in the face df iho fact
that among that crowd of yon there were seve
ral thieves conveying away their plunder with
them, what honest man, among yon here assem
bled, can look me to the face and complain that
his dignity ha* been insulted by tbe endeavors
of the officers to detoet them ? If there is such
a ono here, doubtless he will bear watching. Now
the most of you went to work this morning.
Why did yon not keep at work? It was
simply because some unprincipled scalawag
or other, possibly a receiver of those stolen ar-
cles, had seen (bat ho was losing tho chance for
more of his infamous profits, and therefore
whispered to you that your dignity had been
Insulted. Insulted, indeed! everything else but
insulted; for yon should bo grateful that the
thieves have been eliminated from among yon,
and tho suspicion that was spread broadcast
over yon all has been bronght to bear on the
guilty, and that the honest and true men of
your body have been relieved of any possible
doubt of tbeir integrity. Now, I want Uio men
who took the lead to quitting work to take tho
lead to returning to it. I shall expect yon all
to be hard at it to five minutes by the watch
from this time.”
The crowd very sensibly agreed that the
Mayor was correct, and picking np their tools,
departed at a trot for the gronnds.
Do you need a cook stove that will give per
fect satisfaction for ten years or more and stand
the assault and battery of rough cooks ? Then
go to Truman <t Green and bny one of the no
ted Chauteb Oaxs.

Washington, October 17.—Tho Attorney Gen

stating that fivo Ku-klox, with disguises com
plete, have been captured.
Three-quarters of a million of revenue stamps
were found to bo safo in tho Govornmont vault

Tbe following iseffleial from the Agricultural
Bureau: Tho cotton returns of October are no
more favorable than those of preceding months.
In no State is the average of September fully
sustained. The general average of condition
to the first week of the present month is 76 per
cent, against SO per cent, in September. In
some sections in the Mississippi VaUey and in
Texas improved prospects are reported, while
the preponderance of testimony to the South
west, os well as on the Atlantic coast, favors a
farther redaction of tho expected yield. The
percentage of condition in the several States is
as follows: North Carolina, 80; South Carolina,
75; Georgia, 72; Florida, 73; Alabama, 75;
Mississippi, 76; Louisiana, 73; Texas, 72; Ar
kansas, 82; Tennessee, 94. The injuries re
ported are from rust, shedding of bolls prema
turely, sufficiently low temperature to check the
development of bolls to more northern latitude,
floods and inundations in Florida and Georgia,
sprouting or rotting of bolls from rains, drouth
in the section west of Georgia, and the boll or
army worms in portions of Mississippi and
more western States. It does not appear that
the losses from insects are general or very seri
ous, with a few isolated exceptions. Drouth
should be credited with a larger proportion of
the depreciation than any other assigned cause,
notwithstanding the fact that cotton endnrea
the lack of moistnro better than otbor crops.
Tbe present indications do not point to a crop
of more than 3,000,000 of bales. If the re
matotog season shonld be unfavorable for the
development and gathering of the fibre this re
sult must be accepted.
