As Ixoxmocs Piece of Woee.—We saw a day
or two ago, a bottle with s muoio box in the bot
tom of it, so arranged that when the bottle is
turned up to pour out a drink, the marie st
ones begins. The bottle is in the Georgia No.
2, and Mr. Casey calls its oontenta his “made
hiaky." Now John Black, don’t aoouao us of
drinking, because we can appreciate a good
thing when onr attention is colled to it—bang.
Attempt st Suicide.—At about half-past
five o'clock yesterday afternoon, Min Lizzie
Woodall, s milliner snd dressmaker on Cotton
Avenue, was found lying on s bed in her room
in an insensible condition, with a phiil by her
side, containing s small quantity of morphine.
Upon examination it was found that she had
token a large quantity of the deadly poison.
At a late hoar lost night her oondition was very
oritical, her physicians entertaining no hope of
her recovery.
The Rue.—For several days past the weather
hat been very fickle, clonda and sunshine have
been beautifully interspersed and all the weather
wise have been making predictions. At length
the long-looked for shower came yesterday
evening.' But “let it rain,” says W. P. Carlos.
The weather has no effect npon him. Ha koows
that people must eat, and no matter whether it
be alarm or snnabine ho keeps receiving every
thing neoessary to appease bnnger. Fish, oys
ters, bams, batter, sugar, coffee, cheese—every
thing in fact Go down and see what an assort
ment he has.
Cm Wzazhzb Statement.—The ares of
highest pressure is somewhere on the top of s
high hotue on College Hill, and will probably
remain there unites s low pressure should set
in toward the river, in whioh oase it will go
somewhere else or stay where it is, or both. An
area of mud is central just under your foot when
yon atop into the street. Light showers are
reported from the down town stations, with an
increasing tendency, which may result in a reg
ular ground soaker.
Probabilities: The rain will probably contin
ue to fall until it stops, whioh contingency
hinges npon the oondition of the weather in a
great measure. Immediately npon the cessa
tion of the rain the wind will veer to the north
west or some other quarter, and if each an
event should take plaoe, the chances are good
for a cool snap, unless it shonld continue warm.
These statements and probabilities are reported
expressly for the Teleqsifb xsd Mnssixazn
by an expreieneed weather clerk, upon the ac
curacy of whose statements our readers may
roly with the greatest degree of doubt and'uc-
certainty.

Houses Beanos.—As on evidence of the pros
perity of Mscon it is almost impossible to find
a dwelling bouse of any kind to rent in Ibe
oily. Not n bonso is offered bnl is taken al
most immediately, and some parties are now
wanting to rent who cannot find a vacant house
offering. It is a matter of snrprise to ns that
such should be the osse. There are several
vacant lots near the business portion of the city
npon' which neat little cottages conld be erected
at a cost of from two thonssnd to twenty five
hundred dollars. These houses conld be rented
at from twenty-flve to thirty dollars per month,
thereby securing to the owner a -very handsome
interest upon the money invested. The subject
has been mentioned In these columns before,
bnt looking upon it as a matter of considerable
importance, and one that does tosomeextent of-
feet the prosperity of the city, we again press
the subject npon the owners of vacant lots.
Many men of smsll means, having families, can
afford to rent and regnlate their expenses ac
cording to their purses, who cannot afford to
pay thirty-five to forty dollars per month board
for each member of the family. We hope the
matter will be taken into consideration and
acted npon by land owners in the city.
Tee Piizmium List.—We hear a great deal of
complaint with regard to the premiums awarded
and reoommended at tho recent Fair. And it real
ly does seem to ns that it is a little mixed. Pre
miums have been awarded and reoommended to
two or three different parties for precisely the
same articles, not alone In one department, bnt
in many. We think tho custom hitherto fol
lowed by the Society, of having the nsme
of the party making an entry attached to
the article entered, is altogether wrong, and
leaves good gronnd for an accusation of favorit-
sm on the part of the committee awarding the
premiums. We do not make SDy such charge,
bnt have heard it made, and merely throw ont
the suggestion that entries be made by number
in the fntnro, withholding the nomo of the
party making an entry from the committee al
together. One more suggestion: Giving several
prominms npon the same articles has a tendency
to do away with the desire to exoeL The com
mittees shonld be sworn to know no friends,
and no latitude shonld be allowed them ontride
of the published premlnm lists of the Society.
Lot the best be so pronounced, and if a second
premium is offered let it stop there. It is all
folly to close the lists of premiums awarded with
a still larger list of premiums recommended.
Let no premiums be given npon anything be
cause it is rery good; let only those that exeel
be awarded prizes.
MaxoB'a Covet.—When in the course of city
events it becomes necessary to clothe a new man
with jndioial robes, oh! don't the poor law
breaking shiners suffer in their inmost pockets ?
A new broom sweeps dean, and It is no less
true that anew "pro tern.’’ cleans ont the last
oent of loose change conoeried beneath the
jeans of which is made a sinner’s breeches,
when be gets a dig at him.
A new actor stepped npon the stage yesterday
morning, and Theophilns PeasScks says, “he’s
wnsser than the ’(other man.” Charles Baker
and the aforesaid Feastleks are truly loil sym
pathizers with onr persecuted Rufus, and, like
him, are versed in "ways that are dark.” They
manifested as tender a regard for their sweet-
scented brethren aa dees tho previously men
tioned R. Basted Bollock, by winning their
confidence and then swindling them ont of their
currency.” Theophilns plays chuck luck and
Charles assists him. They’re very clever, and
no sooner does a oonntry nig enter the limits
of the city than they propose to treat and try
their lack. Greeny, as usual, supposes an
opening is presented for making a fortune and
aooepts the proposition, bnt soon finds ont that
all his grecne have twined themselves around
the peaatick. They were following their pro
fession day before yesterday, when a naughty
policeman passed that way and took them with
him to the city hotel to spend the evening.
The new "pro tern." interviewed them yester
day morning at the city reception room, and
becoming very indignant at their oonduct, made
a strong wipe at their pocket books. They
paid twenty-flve dollars each into the city treas
ury, and have tho privilege of amusing them
selves by teaching Finney's boarders how to
throw dice for the next thirty days. Having
disposed of these two cases, his Honor looked
knowing for a few minntes, though slightly dis
appointed at having no other poor wretch to
gouge out of his cash. Wo could see from the
smile on bis countenance that he was expecting
complimentary notice from “locals,” which
we suppose he can get by investing *• twenty-
five dollars and ooeia.” Suppose he tries it.
A ti* A TT?.Ct,' We are the recipients to-day from
Hudson G. Wolfe A Co., of New Yosk, of
couple of bottles of their celebrated “BeH
Schnapps. Mr. H. G. Wolfe, of that extensive
firm, was connected in the ichnapps business
for over 20 years, with bis uncle, the late Udol-
pho Wolfe, aud is well known among onr mer
chants generally. Mr. Wolfe claims for his Bell
Schnapps that it is the purest and beat article of
its kind imported in this country. After
fully examining the eontenls of the samples
sent ns, we have no hesitation in rtootnmend-
ing the same to onr friends. A pure article of
Holland Gin is much needed in onr oonntry for
those who ase it medicinally, and by reference
to Mr. Wolfe's advertisement in an another ool-
umn it will be seen that the Bell Schnapps is
just the artiele that is wanted.
