Under date of the 10th, the Tribune's Wash
ington correspondent sends these sorrowful
tidings. To think that the faithful should be
*o nnharmonions is one of the keenest griefs
that ever stabbed a loyal heart like ours. It is
very, very sad. Says the correspondent:
The' efforts to reconcile the President and
tbo moot prominent of the disaffected Kepub
lican Senators have finally been abandoned.
Those who were must active fa this movement
feel considerably disappointed at their lack of
tncceex, and tluuk that a good opportunity to
beat the most embarrassing dissensions in the
Uepubtiaan party has been allowed to pass.
They urged that, fa view of the late tueoeeae*
of toe Kepublican party in the State elections,
and its acknowledged RtreDg<h with the people,
the President could afford to be magnanimous,
and make the first advances toward a recon
ciliation. Much of ths bitter feeling, they
said, was toe result of misunderstanding or of
mistakes which the President has sinoe, by
his actions, if not by direct declaration, ad
mitted to be such, and done something to
oorrect j and now Gen. Grant, with a party
behind him such aa never existed in this
oountry before, might forget the past with
out any danger of having his motives
misunderstood, and make friends of those who
havo always been looked upon as the leaders
of the party. The greatest efforts, ms ta already
known, were directed to the bringing together
of Mr. Sumner and the President, but these
who approached the latter found him as im
movable as a rock. The President disclaimed
ever having taken part in any movement to im
pair toe influence of the Massachusetts Senator
in the Senate or elsewhere, and said that he bad
no share fa tha removal, last spring, of Mr.
Sumner from the chairmanship of toe Foreign
g^i,tinn* Committee ; but he thinks that Mr.
Sumner baa done more to Injure him than any
other one hundred men ever did, and, fa per
fect harmony with bis character, as generally
understood, ia too obstinate to make any move
towMd peace. The Presiduut is reported to feel
most sorely s remark attributed to Mr. Sumner,
and extensively published last summer, that
General Grant was “toe lowest man who ever
occupied the Presidential chair.” Mr. Sumner,
on too other band, feels indignant at the
treatment which he has received at the hands
of the President, or of those who are supposed
to represent him; but while he asked no one to
assist in returning him to his old committee,
and while no position which could be conferred
on him would mike him approve much of the
President's policy, generous treatment at the
baeda of tbose Senators, who are understood to
represent General Grant's wishes, would doubt
less have removed some of the feeling on both
sides. But, when the Senate was carefully can
vassed and only seven of those who stood by
Sumner last spring were found ready to vote for
his restoration, though it was thought that a
mnjority would favor fa if they believed it could
bo done, it was seen that further effort was use
less. The efforts to bring General Grant and
other Senators together were not so grea*, and
have now Mao been abandoned. There are, as
yet, do signs of t breaking out of fresh hostih-
ties; and, as it is not understood that any of
tho appointments now before toe Senate will be
strongly opposed, a truce may be expected for a
while at least
Democrats, Beware!
Under this head tho Atlanta Sun, of yester
day, has the following:
Yesterday we published an extract from the
NevWork Times, announcing that the Badieals
of Georgia had determined to run James Atkins,
of this city, for Governor.
When the leaders of the pMty were caucus
ing here in secret, they nominated Mr. Atkins,
and we stated the fact, but we were authorized
by certain members of the caucua to say, that,
afterwards, it was determined not to run a can
didate, and to take no pMt in toe election.
We now learn, reliably, tost in necret <xra-
clavo, they have determined to run Mr. Atkins!
This determination has been communicated
widely by their seorot organizations ail over the
State; and toe plan is to keep it secret from
the Democrats everywhere, as far as possible—
