CITY AFFAIRS.
WEDNESDAY MORNING, DEO. 20, 1871.
Seating Rink open every night from half-
peat seven to half-pest nine o'clock.
Religious.—We are requested to announce
that divine service % will be held in the Mulber
vy Street Methodist Church on Wednesday
evening, commencing at 7 o clock.
Auction Sale cw O. E. Besore.—We call at
tention to an advertisement of Mr. Besore in
another column of many valuable articles that
he will sell at auction this morning. We have
seen some excellent bargains sold at his auction
room, and it would be well to be on hand to-day.
At a regularcommunication of Macon Lodge,
No. 5 F. A. M., held December l*tb, the fol
lowing cfficera were elected to serve the ensu
ing year
L. W. Hunt, W. M. ; J. J. Cornell, 8. W ;
W. M. Key, J. Vi.; J. R. Rice, S. D.; B. Low-
•nthal, J. D.; J. E. Wells, Treasurer; M. S. Free
man, Secretary.
The Election.—The election yesterday passed
off quietly. We saw no excitement of any kind
but such as is customary on other days. There
being no opposition to the Democratic candi
dat#-. not much interest was manifested and the
vote was small. Only 1,121 votes were polled,
seventeen of which were negroes. Eleven hun
dred and nineteen were cast for Smith and two
scattering.
Concert at the Blind Asylum.—We call
special attention to the concert to be given this
afternoon at the Asylum for the Blind by the
teachers and pupils of the institution. The
modes of instruction will be shown, and the
children will exhibit their skill and proficiency
in music. We hope our citizens will patronize
them liberally, as the money could not possibly
be devoted to a more laudable object. The
concert opens at three o'clock this afternoon.
Mbs. Moulton To-morrow Night. It will hard
ly escape th6 recollection of any of our readers
that to morrow night Macon will have an op
portunity of hearing the matchless vocalization
of this thorough artiste and charming woman
We do not doubt that she will have an audience
measured in number only by the capacity of
the hall to contain if, and made up of the most
refined and cultured people of the city. It is
seldom they have such an opportunity to hear
snch vocalization, and wo are sure it will be im
proved.
The Masquerade Ball.—The note of busy pre
paration for this event is heard on all sides among
the gay belles and fascinating beaux of Macon.
We are assured it will be a brilliant spectacle and
a grand success. We think there will be at least
one hundred and twenty persons present in cos
tume, and, of course, there will be fun, galore.
Mrs. Dessau, on Mulberry street, will take orders
for the ladies for costumes of every description.
Those gentlemen who desire to select cos
tumes can order them through Mr. S. N. Theus,
at Wing A Solomon's jewelry store. A celebra
ted New York costumer has forwarded Mr. T. a
list from which selections may be made and at
a moderate price. Let the young gentlemen of
Macon eclipse even their effort last year, and
they will crown themselves with laurels, indeed.
Wing A Solomon i ■ ’day Goods.—We
spent a few minuses yesterday morning looking
through their extensive atock, and an attempt
at enumeration would bo folly. They advertise

The Paintings—Not ao much from a desire
to aid the proprietor in his aalee is that the cit
izens of Macon will display their refined and
cultivated tastes, we again insist upon all, and
especially the ladies, calling and examining the
beautiful collection of paintings in the old poet-
office building. Bach a display of pure gems
from the finest artists in the world was never
made in our city. We 6pent a half hour or
more in the hall yesterday morning and were
never more pleased in our life. Mr. Levy takes
great pleasure in showing round those who call
upon him, and though you may have no desire
to purchase a visit to the room will amply re
pay you.
The sales of these pictures will take place on
Thursday and Friday nights next, and not dur
ing the day as announced in yesterday s issue.
We notice those energetic gentlemen, Messrs.
Guilford A Hill, are selling pianos on the in
stallment plan. They never keep anything but
a first-class instrument, and the practical ex
perience of Prof. Guilford is exemplified in the
tine selection of pianos he has made.

The area of low barometer which was Monday
afternoon central over Massachusetts Bay has
moved northeast beyond our stations, and was
followed for a short time by clear weather.
disturbance which was indicated existing
Monday afternoon in tho extreme south
west has apparently passed through Kentucky
northeast, producing a rapid fall in the barom
eter accompanied by snow from Tennessee to
Michigan and New England, where it is still
snowing. The temperature continues very low
and falling from Iowa ard Wisconsin to Wyom
ing. The reports from California received to
day show that a severe storm prevailed there on
Monday, but has now abated. The barometer
has risen rapidly at the Rocky Mountain sta
tions as far as heard from.
Probabilities. The disturbance on the
Pacific coast will probably pass northeast
into Montana, and falling barometer and
rising temperature prevail on Wednesday
the Rocky Mountain stations. Tho
_ gh barometer north of Missouri will move
east with diminished pressure, and cold north
west winds prevail west of the Apalichan range.
Cloudy weather, with westerly winds, will pre
vail very generally on Wednesday along the
Atlantic coast. Brisk winds from North Caro
lina to Maryland. Navigation being closed
upon the Lakes, the display of cautionary sig
nals will be suspended at the Lake ports during
the winter.
Washington, December 19.—Tho President’s
message asks for additional legislation upon the
civil service. Under the law constituting the
commission, the authority is vested in the
President to enforce the regulations, but they
are not binding upon him and may bo disre

permanent board of primary examination, and
asks for all the strength Congress can give him
to carry out the reforms recommended by the
committee.

London, December 19.—The press of the city
