A negro Man Murdered, Thrown into a
Boat and Srt Adrett.—The SAvannah News of
Tuesday has this item:
On Saturday afternoon last three negroes,
Wm. Anderson, .1. Micigaulr, and one whose
name we were unable to ascertain, left the eity
the foor of gaa house hill and proceeded to
Hereven’a Ferry, on the other side of the river.
Upon reaching tbe ferry, the nnkuoam negro
nd Mtniganlt left Anderson, who it seems was
very drank, lying in the bottom of the boat,
and went to tbe plantation of the former, a
abort distance from the ferry. On arriving at
the plaes. the unknown negro attacked Mani-
gault and dealt him four blows, knocking him
prostrate and infiieUng wounds which proved
fatal. Where tbe negro went after oommitting
the murderous deed, we are unable to say, bnt
appear* that he returned to the plane where
be tad left the negro lying, early on Sunday
morning, and found him dead. Be dragged the
body to tbe boat, in which Anderson was still
sleeping, having not recovered from his drnnken
stupor, and threw it in. He then set the boat
adrift with the corpse snd a “dead drank,”
and saw it start down the river.
The uniform of tbe Fhceiix Bifirmen of Sa

Griffin got drank last Sunday, and after knock

aelf knocked down by another and carried to the
gnard-honso. As usual, a mob of his friends
collected, and with much characteristic cavort
ing swore they would tear the hcuie down if he
was not turned out. The Mayor then came
dawn, and after haring lhe City Physician to
examine the negro's head, which was somewhat
damaged, concluded to turn him out, which was
done, greatly to the delight aad triumph of the
darkeys. A great many citizens of Griffin very
naturally do not like such proceedings, and se
verely censure the Mayor for his action, espe
cially as he only fined the offender $25 and
costs and did not arrest a single one of the
rioters. It seems to ns their indignation is
qaito natural.
Mr. T. D. SrEER, of Sumter county, writes
follows to the Americas Republican on the
fence question. He certainly makes out a
strong case on his side of the question:
Mr. Editor: As the fence question is now
being discussed, and will probably be presented
to the voters of Samter for their approval or
disapproval, I propose through the column! of
the Republican to make a short statement of rer -
facts in relation to the cost and expense of
building and repairing fenoes. My woodland
farm (proper) contains 300 acres, 500 improved
snd under fence, and I now make what I be
lieve to be a fair estimate of the cost of fencing,
building gate®, repairs, etc., on my farm for
the last twenty years, the time I have resided
on the farm.
From actual oennt there are, pannels

of land which occupies—say twelve feet for
every string of fence on the farm: nor have I
estimated the vnlne of timber made into rails,
or expense of clearing oat fenoe corners—three
very considerable items for every farmer. I
have also left cut of aooount picket and plank
fences—small gates and lots, which are to be
fonnd on every farm.
Now, Mr. Editor, I have but one question to
ask : If Woodland Farm belongs to me, where
is the justice or legal right to tax me $531 .‘1
per year to prevent stock running at large (in
which I have no interest) from destroying my
crop. Respectfully, T. D. Speer.
The Latest Novelty—Gt«s» Bonnets.
Conspicuous among the novelties at the
Vienna Exposition is a lady’s bonnet sent from
Bohemia, specimens of whiob, the Sh Louis
Democrat, says have been imported into this
country, and will bo generally introduced next
fall. It says:
These hats aro of the most delicate and bean-
tifni designs, and saoh is their adaptability to
ail costumes snd occmons that they will prob
ably soon come into universal nse. The body
of the hat is made of loess pieces of fine glus,
fastened closely together by a gutta peruha
band, which allows it to oonform to the hmd.
Inside there is a lining of silk, which is the cnly
piece of fabrio nsed ia 'ho minnfscttr -.
The trimmings on the ontside are after the
prevailing mode, oomitting of srrealh, flowers,
feathers and ribbon-', ail made of delicatdy
spun glass of wonderful beanty. Of coutsesU
the trimmings have their natural colors, aid
by a patent process the glassy appearance is lo
well snbdned that the material is not suspected.
The most beantifnl hnmmicg birds and flowers
are nsed for ornamentation, and oolored lo
naturally that in appearsnoe they are snperitr
to the nsnal artificial goods.
It is almost incredible the small amount ol
glass that enters into the constrnclion of one of
these hats, for the thread is so fi oe that a great
spaoe is covered without sn; perceptible in
crease in tho weight. They weigh bat a few
ounce?, or abont one-fifth of the average weight
of the present style. With the care that is
nasally given by a lady to a new hat, these new
articles will outlast twenty of them, for there
no wear to them ; moi.itnro will not stain
them, and if dnst should settle to dim their
beauty, it is readily removed by a single spray
of water.' The oolors are so blended that for
ordinary occasions they present a general nen

Drought Around New York.
The World cf Sunday says the drought on
Lorg Island, especially at the east end, is be*
coming a very serious matter. The hay crop
almost an entire loss thcre, and corn, wheat,
and other cereal crops are beginning to suffer
severely, especially on tbe light soils. Special
prayer-meetings for rain are annonneed to be
held to day in several of the chnrchee. Every,
thing is so dry thnt unless rain Bhould oomo Boon
much damage may be expected from fire. Indeed,
the damBge from this canro already is quite ex-
tensive. A day or two ago a fire originated from
horning brash on tbe lino of Stewart’s Railroad,
north of Breslan, and swept over a large tract
of land in the direction of Babylon, bnrniog a
considerable amonnt of valuable timber and
destroying several fields of standing grass. Tbe
loss, it is estimated, cranot fall short of $10,-
000, though it is fortunately divided among a
number of owners. West Babylon bad a nar
row escape from the cot fl tgraticn, many of the
inhabitants removing their fnrnitare as a meas
ure of safety. A general turnout of tho inhab
itants was necessary to snbdue the fire.
ON FTATEN ISLAND.
Westerly and southwesterly winds havo pre
vailed on Staten Island daring the past two
weeks, without any rain of consequence, and
tho drought is now severely felt. The hay orop
will be nnnsnslly light, and potatoes, oat?, corn,
and the garden crops are all seriously affected.
The wells snd cisterns are also getting dry for
want of rain.

Sharp Shots at the Back Pay Grab-
brnu
The St. Lonis Democrat evidently is not an
ardent admirer of the back pay grab and tho30
high and mighty Congressmen who took advan
tage of it. It has these shots at them, to whioh
wo cry encore:
Stephen A. Douglas nsed to tako bis $3 a day
is underpaid at $7,500 for six k&VvVce~
or about $40 a day.
War. H. Sewaed never grumbled that he was
underpaid when he was receiving about $1,500
a year as Senator. Cockling and Fenton voted
themselves five times that much, and yet thty
are not happy.
John C. Calhoun waa a fire-eater and a se
cessionist and ail that, bnt he never was moon
enough to steal $5,000 out of the Treasury in
a single haul, ns his ancestors from the Pal
metto State have done.
Henlt Clay got $8 a day, and never strndi
for higher wages. H13 unworthy successor,
Mr. 8tevenson, gets $40 a day, and is so firmly
convinced of his own superior worth that to
won’t pay back a little snm of $5,000 which
doe? not rightly belong to him.
Daniel Webster made a tolerably good Sen
ator at the rate of $8 per diem, coanting only
the actual days spent in Washington ; bnt Mr.
Carpenter, of Wisconsin, thinks he ia five times
as valuable to the country as the Great Ex-
pounde wa?.
Rennfon ol Ancient West-Pointers.
Mr. Forney’s Philadelphia Press of the 28th
says this:
‘We liko tho id=»aof a meeting between West
Point graduates North and South for tho pur
pose of effecting a cordial reunion of the ele
ments of the regular army engaged in mortal
combat during our civil war. The consultation
at St. Lonis on tbe 20th inst, looking to such
a revival, was pajticipated in by Union and
Confederate officers, and a call has been issued
for tbe gathering of the old graduates of the
West Point Military Aoidemy in June of 1874.
This is the way to effect real reconstruction—
oblivion to the past, co-operation in the future;
and there is a peculiar propriety in it when we
refhot that Southern members of Congress,
Senators and Representatives, are appointing
cadets to tbe Military Academy at West Point,
and to the Naval Academy at Annipolis, whose
fathers and brothers served in tbe rebellion.
Why then should not the old graduates meet
together in sincere comradeship ?
There is a spice of cordiality and heartiness
in the foregoing which wa are glad to see.
General Sheridan has recently avowed, ia
an attractive little speech at Indianapolis, that
he gained the battle of Winchester “almost en
tirely” in consequence of information famished
by a “Union” yonng lady, Mis3 Wright, of Win
chester. His great difficulty was to communi
cate with her. Finally be wrote her a letter on
tissue paper, which he rolled and compressed to
the size of his thumb end, and then enveloped
in tin-foil. This weighty package wa3 then
coLLsigaed to the capaaiona month of a colossal
African, who had a Confederate pass to sell
vegetables in Winchester. He delivered the
message and returned with the answer, rolled in
tbe same tin-foil, within two days. “She was a
nice girl and true as steel,” said the Lieutenant
General the other day, and he fought the battle
by her reply and won it. Miss Wright is now in
the Treasury Deprrtment, Washington—and
Phil Sheridan i3 still a bachelor when sober!

The Charge (o (ho Walworth J nry.
New York. Jaly 2 —The charge of Jcdge Da
vit in the Walworth case was: “If the jury

Wilworth came to New York with intent to
mtrder his father, then the crime was mnrdar
in .he first degree ; bnt if the crime was com-
mited in a snddon minner, in an instant, then
it W3uM be murder in the second degree.”
T/io Judge also charged that the jnry should
not regard the fears whioh tbe prisoner enter-
taimd for tho life of his mother, as they conld
not le regarded as any justification of his crime;
that they should only regard tho$o fears which
weropersonal. The law did not mak* it a jasti-
ficatim when ihe killing dono was through fear
that tbe life of another was in danger; they
oonl^ however, consider whether the fear that
his nother’s life wai in danger did not give
point to the fear which he entertained for his
3wn Ife on the mooting on the morning of the

charge the jury retired, and after an absence of
three hoars returned at 8 10 p. m with a verdict
of gaiity of murder in the second degroe.

oate having in charge tho negotiation of the now
United Statesflves to tho amount of $10,000,000
is confirmed by members of the syndicate here.
This operation is liholy to have an important
bearing, not only on the friture prospect of
American securities in London, but on the
coarse of that money market; as the transfer
of tho money necessary to pay for these bonds
from tie account of tho Berlin Government at
the Loidon Joint Stoik Bsnk to the syndicate
banken in London will, it is thought prevent,
for the present at least, any further shipments
of goli from London to Geimany.
Tho Berlin Government was probably better

that tb bullion necessary to carry on its coin

indemnity payments falling due on tho 5th of

shout be more satisfactory to those interested
in th advance of American credit than is this;
for i shows that the Gorman Government con-
sidex that our promises to pay are equivalent,
in itieatima'.ion, to cash in the bank in London,

ber i have been made by one government to
anoter where no political considerations were
invored, and where the governments were not
