THURSDAY MORNING, JULY:
1873.
On Itao Atlantic.
At 8ki, June 10, 1673.
Editor i Tdifrwph and Mcuenger: There
are adrant&ges end disadvantages appertaining
to the middle of the Atlantic which concern a
newspaper correspondent. He has plenty of
time on hit band*, bat doe* not feel much in
clination to mtko nse of it ( for of all places in
the world whoro there are inducements to idle
ness this is the home for them. He has lots of
items for *‘locals’* which would fill jonr fourth
page day 1>y day, bnt then be cannot help there
being loo many “personals" mixed np with
them, and if yon will not exoor-unnnicate me
for saying It, I cannot help thinking there are
too many of Iboie admitted into newspapers al
ready. Then, too, be can take his own time
abonl his articles, and has no p. d. bowling for
oopy, and compelling him to kill or drown
Homebody at a venture, In order to fill np his
sheet; bnt on tbe other band he cannot always
oontxol his time, for the ship may be pitching
and rolling **nd jumping like a yonsg male
which is being hsrntascd for the first time, or
there is somo eating operation to bo gone
through, or better still, there are ladies to attend
on who require a^.mtance In walking the decks,
or making comfortable in their chairs, and of
coarse they most have oar preferences
Well, bnt you wish to havo something more
interesting than this, I dare say, so I will try
to oblige yon. Tbo good skip Minnesota, of
the Galon line, loft New York on the 4th of
Jnne, to mako her flfty socond trip between the
old and now world, with yoar correspondent
one of her p%s?0Dg*rs. The shilling of an At
lantic slesmer is always an interesting sight.
The ship displays her national colors and fiigs
indicating tbe service in which she Is engaged.
Bhe is clear and trim, her saloons and state
rooms in holiday array. Her officers all \n nni
form, with gold Iaco and bright buttons, look
log “ahipahapo and Bristol fashion," as tbe old
salts say. Then tbo ship is all in a bustle with
arrivals of passengers and their friend*, bag
gage tumbling aboard, tho sailors “yo beave-o-
Ing," carriage*, drays and wagons rumbling np
tho wharf, discharging Uialr load* *nd 4«p*it-
Tbe order of tbe day generally ia, breakfast
at half-past eight, lunch at noon, dinner at four,
and tea at eight, and if any one requires sapper
after that it will be brought as ordered. Tbe
first few days do not generally bnng a>l passen
ger* to tbe table, tbe reason for which i* suffi
ciently obvious, and It ia not unfrequent that
some of those wbe do put tn an appearance at
meal time* have very pressing affairs which re
quire sniden attention, causing them to leave
mawfftf all o»remony. But a* eels, they say,
|*ecoiue, with n*e, aoraatococd to skinning, ao
ih'we disagreeables terminate in da« time, and
then, to see bow the victuals disappear won'd
be a caution even to paterfamilias whose board
it surrounded by growing boys. Very few need
suffer longer than three or fonr days, nuless
through their own fault. Anyone who will fight
tbe - Hide du rurrr, and get on deck—even if
he has to l»e earned there—will soon find that it
is shorn of many of its terrors. And then, when
tbe victory is gained, tbe splondid appetite
which follow* is ample recompense for the pre
vious inoonventenco. Tbe lad'es of our party
•re all now quite well, and walk fbe deck like
old Rtilor*. We hive a pleasant party on board,
and collected from all points—some from New
Z>aUnd, one from Bermuda, others from Indi
ana, Tennaylvania, New York, Georgu, Wis-
oomtia ard New Orleans. Home returning from
travels, other* starting on tour*. The Exposi
tion at Vienna is scarcely mentioned, which
confirms tbe opinion yoar correspondent enter
tained before, that tbe rammer travel is in
creasing year by year, and that the Vienna at
traction do** not alone account for the larger
number* which this year have crossed tbe At
lantic. Tbe Presbyterian* are largely repre
sented here, and there are two Presbyterian
ministers to meet any demands which reqoire
their servioe.
As this is a British ship it is required that the
service of the Ohurcb cf England shall be read
at Ieaat once on the Handay. We had there
fore worship last Lord’* day morning. When
the crew and pasaengexs—steerage as well as
saloon—SRStmbled in tbe saloon. Capt. Free
man read morning prayers and a Presbyterian
minister from Gaorgia, at the request of the
Gaptain, preached the sermon. In the evening
we aga<n bad servioe, when at Episcopal clergy
man from Wisconsin read prayers and preached.
We havo hitherto had a splendid voyage,
nothing disagreeable bnt fogs which, till we
crowed the Bank i of Newfoundland, were fre
quent. Daring the existence of a fog. a boarso
strange whistle is blown every two ruinates to
signal any vessel which might be near to keep
a sharp look out. The danger in a collision
with ono of those iron steamers would be great
est to onr antagonist; these vessels would ran
down and ent through any ordinary wooden
craft, m was tbo cuo a short time ago when the
steamer clove a ship in twain, half passing each
aide of her. We havo had winds for several
days, bat aro now under both sail and steam.
We have passed and teen quite a number of
log. Policemen keeping tho way clear, driving

which we know nothing on onr side, makes day
linger on and on as if afraid or unwilling to
yield np bis charge to night. Really, at thi*
period of tbe year on this side of the Atlantic
and in thia latitude there is no real night, and
it *eems as if one day softly glides into another
like a grard strain c f music, now poured out in
oborn* acd then again in decreacendo measure*
as if passing away in tbe distanoo, to wind itself
through soft and lonely valleys and come back
round tbo mountains to rouse our Bonis again

hope we shall descend from Pega*us with a

so many thing* to se*, the signal light*, the
moon rising out of the sea, the revolving and
fl imhing signal lights on shore to guide ua clear
of rocks and dangers, the eager talk about
everything, nobody wants to sleep. We have
had time enough to sleep at sea, and now are
nnder the power of a reaction which will brook
no control. Bat some time in the early morn
