Judge Weems had but one oaso before him
yeaterday,
Montgomery Jemlion and Elvira Slater wero
charged with “interlnaln oondnot.” The action
In thla case wu brought by Maris Nspler, who
olalms to htvo been, before freedom, a brevet
wife of the said Jemison; bat somo years ago
he abandoned her entirely, and was formally
married to his seoond love, Elvira Slater. The
defense proved, however, that at the time Jem'
icon was playing Benedfot to Elvira, she had
three other strings to her bow. In short, she
had four able bodied husbands, and, seeing
that this wu ths stato of affairs, Jemison
slipped the noose and put his neck into another
one in proper form.
An not pused by the Legislature of 1SG6, le
galized the matrimonial relations of Ihe colored
people, whether they had boen duly solemnized
by churoh end Slate or not. Wherever two
persons of oolor had been living together ns
man and wife, they were to be considered duly
wedded. But, in case when a man had brlg-
hamlzsd to the extent of more than one wife, or
a woman had contracted to sew on the bnttons
for more than one husband, (and such cases
were very numerous), then the said husband or
wife wu allowod to seleot from his wives or her
husbands, such an ono M was his or her choice
over all the others, and bo formally married to
her or him, and allow tho others to go and do
llkewiae.
Elvira had neg'ected this bit of precaution
to have Montgomery firmly sealed to her, con
sequently her olaim upon him was nullified and
he is permitted to live in peace with his ssoond
wife, provided the latter will allow pesos to
reign.
The llog law.
The elty authorities do not appear to have re
laxed any energy in the execution of the dog
law, and the Mayor's oonrt la crowded every
morning with persons who are summoned thither
to answer the charge of keeping dogs without
having paid the tax upon them. A consequence
of this action is Captain McManus disposes of a
considerable nnmber of badges every morning
the people preferring to pay two dollars fora
badge, rather than fire dollars fine.
This notion of the authorities is entirely
right There are some people who own good
doge end have paid the tax upon them without
grumbling, and it is but jnst and proper that
others who own dogs shonld be placed upon the
ume footing. Somo bare merely neglected to
ocmply with (he taw, while others are aotnally
ueking to elnde it This should not be per
mitted and the indications are that it will not
be permitted. The Mayor, we are Rlad to say,
it very firm in the matter, and when parties are
brought np they are allowed one of two alterna
tive#—to pay the tax or submit to a fine.
He had one man np the other day who owned
hla determination not to pay the tax. The
Meyor told him that he oonld then pay tho fine.
This ha declined to do also, on the ground that
the dog law wu lllrgal. This, the Mayor said,
be me not there to decide upon. The law wu
on the atatute book, and he was there to exe
unt. It. If the gentleman wanted to oonteet
the law he ooold do so; bat in the meantime he
taut either purohue a badge or pay a fine.
Thia the gentleman still refusedbut the Mayor
told him hw must either pay tho tax or pay a
fine of a hundred dollars. Tho gentleman finally
ooooluded that the badge would probably ooet
him leu than the fine, end ths dog owner walk

Helped to de to.
Bat whtle the eaihoritio* ate thus vigorously at
work, the dog-eatehors ought to be more ener
getic. In t walk of fire blocks as evening or
two'ago, weooanted fifteen dogs a pern the streets
without badges. There was three dollars end
seventy-five cents' worth of business for the
dog-catcher, bat no dog-euieher wu there to

General Jas. W.Bober'son, General Superin
tendent of the Maoon and Bmnsw.ck railroad,
baa just issued s circular stating that, in order
to give the Macon merchants interested a rev-
onable advantage over competing points for
trade along the line of his real, it has been
determined to give tbem reduced carload rates
on corn, oats, corn meal, flonr, hay and bsoon,
from Macon to points along the line of the
road. Tbe following are tbe redactions made:
From Mtcon to Bead's. No. 18, Ballard’s No.
17, Ouobran, No. 15, Hswklnavillv, 10 percent,
less [hen published rates; Dubois, No. 14, East
man, No. 13, Cbauncy.No. 12, MeBae's No., II,
15 per oent. leu than published rates ; Towns*,-
No. 10, Lumber City, No. 9, Hazlehurst, No.
8 *, 20 per oent. las* thsu published ratal; Gra
ham, No. 8, Baxley, No. 7, Sirrenoy, No. 6,
Batilla, No. ,0, Jesup, No. 4, 25 per cent. leu
than tbe published rates.
Individual shippers will have the privilege of
making up full oar loads of 10,000 pounds from
any of tbe srtielu named. In order to obtain
the benefit of theu rates, shippers mnst note
on a ticket sent with the first dray load the
weight of the proposed shipment and the di
vision of the ume and add the words
“Prodnoe Bates.” Ha also assures mer
chants and ootton shippers that the present
management of the road will, by etriot atten
tion to bnsinas*, prompt adjustment of claims
and ready consideration of complaints or wants,
do all In Its power to facilitate their business
and advance their interest. Darlng the comicg
fall and winter months tbe resource! of the
road will be devoted solely to the retirement
of the “fare bills" now in circulation.
Thla is offering an Important advantage to
the Macon merchants—one that their fine bus!*
neu sense will lead them to accept at once. It
is evident, from this circular, that the manage
ment of the road, as far aa is consistent with
duty, will operate it iu the interest, not of the
Maoon merchants especially, bni of tbe people
who obtain their supplies over tbe road. The
road Is in the hands of good men, who have no
Interest to snburve but that of the road and
of the people.
