for them to marry suddenly and without dis

On the whole, French marriages turn ont TENNESSEE CLEAR SIDES

greater liberty of choloe is allowed. It is well
enough to talk of Paris ecaudate, bnt London

A Beautiful Baby Farm.
There is on Staten Island, near New York I
city, a baby farm, very different in character
from those we so often read about. They arc I
generally qniet retreats, where the innocent*
are sent to be neglected and gradually starved I
to death—the death of the plant being the I
richest crop of tbe farmer. The New Staten
Island institution ia a place for babies to live
and thrive, and enjoy all tbe luxuries of the I
children of the rich at a mere nominal ex- f
pen sc to the parents.
Mrs. Anson Phelps Stokes is rich as a daugh- I
ter and rich as a wife, each fortune being inde- I
pendent of the other. She is a millionaire |
heiress of New York, and is a most disinterest- I
edly philanthropic lady, who don’t knot! how I

home on a new plan in New York, which was
quite successful, save that it was not extensive
enough. It was, however, an experiment that
demonstrated the practicability of the thought I
from which it sprung. It was a home for chil-1
dren of women who were in service, and not I
able to have their babies with them or provide I
them proper care and attention at home. Only I
a very few conld be accomodated, but those few I
proved the practicability of the scheme. The I
lady, thos occupied, of oourse thought a great
deal about her work, and began to dream of ex
tending it. She dreamed of a fine large man- I
sion in the country, in some high situation, I
away up in the clouds if possible, where she
might make a home for children of working I
women, and also a summer retreat for the poor I

A Fish Stoet.—The Bntisnd Herald tells the
following “flsn story i" An old resident of Oss-
tieton, Vermont, who lives in the vicinity of
Bomoseen Like, was reoently fishing the lake,
being anohored but a few rods from shore, when
he had a moot extraordinary “bite and take ' at
the end of hisline, and hook. With an unlimited
amount of exertion he pulled up—a four-gallon
jug, with something inside tnggisgat the line.
Upon breaking the jag, s three-pound pickerel
was fonnd. Tne probabilities are that this fish,
in his early “fisbhqod,” being of a philosophi

The proprietors avail themselves of the
lull in advertising to present their claims
again to the public. Nothing within the
range of our ability is omitted to make
the Telegraph and Messenger In all
its editions acceptable to the reader. As
a vehicle of the earliest news on all cur
rent topics— and of careful and candid
exposition, we concede no superior in this
State.
In point of circulation in the range of
the country trading with Macon, the dif
ferent editions of the paper are far be
yond competition. They literally per
vade the Central and Southwestern coun
ties of Georgia—addressing and inform
ing almost every merchant and house
hold.
No business man of Macon can afford
to bo without the use of these columns
as an advertising medium. No one abroad
seeking a market for any commodity in
this region can intelligently dispense with
their aid in facilitating that object.
For successive generations these two
papers, united for the past three years in
one, have commanded this great field of
circulation, and their hold on the public
confidence has never been disturbed or
interrupted. We are to-day with a larger
cash paid circulation than ever before,
and we hope to go on increasing with the
progress of the country. We do not say
it is the “largest circulation,” but within
our proper field—where we can carry the
earliest news, it is beyond even approxi
mation by any other journal.

TO AND PBOK
Is the largest weekly in the Cotton States,

abundant miscellaneous, political and
news reading for the week. This is pub
lished at $3 per annum or $1 50 for six
months. Specimen numbers will he for
warded gratis on the receipt of an order
enclosing stamp for that purpose. We
would be glad if our patrons of the Week

subscribers. This edition of the paper is
sent to hundreds cf • Georgians who have
emigrated to other States and keeps them
perfectly posted in regard to every im
