Coming for the Heron rreminm.
Tho recent action of the City Council, respect
lng tho premlnm offered for the best drilled
military company at the State Fair, seems to
have awakened considerable activity and inter.
Ml among tho volnntcor companies of the State.
The Atlanta Herald, of yesterday, saya:
The Atlanta Cadets aro very anxious to go to
Maoon to contend for the $600 premlnm for tho
beat drilled company tn Georgia. The com
missioned oOioera of the oompany have agreod
to add $.100, by tbelrown private subscription,
to the premlnm offered by the etty of Maoon,
making $1,000 In all. Tho company will meet
on Friday evening to decld) whether or not they
will go.
i It tho nerald wero familiar with its own ad
vertising columns, it wonld have remembered
that tho premlnm offered by the oily of Msoon
is $760, Instead of $600.
The samopaper lias the following paragraph:
The Georgia Zrnavos wero ont last night,

the company had bis uniform on, and dropped

T1IB WESLEYAN FEMALE COLLI.{J E.
City Connell 4 pproprlatlon.
The City Connell, at Its meeting Tuesday
night, volsd an appropriation of five thousand
dollars to Wesleyan Female College, to aid In
the improvement of tho buildings and gronnds.
The appropriation was iu answer ts the follow
ing mrmortal:
To At Honorable Mayor and Council of At
City of Macon t'
()e.vtlxwk.v—The undersigned have been ap
pointed a oammttteo by the Board of Trustees
of the Wesleyan Female College, to memorialize
your honorable body in tlreir behalf for a dona
tion of $6,000 to the College, to be paid in
monthly Installments ot $600.
The gronnds on which the Board found this
application are mainly the following:
1. IrjproTem.-Lts and repairs are needed on
the college and Its grounds, beyond the ability
of the Trnsteas to provide for—and as this is a
pnl.lic building, of groat vaino to the city—one
whese creditable appearance brings honor to
the elty—the Board think that the citizens will
cheorfnlly see some aid beatowod by the Conn-
oil, especially as their daughters are to be re
cipients of the benefit.
2. The college either brings Into tho city, or
saves to Its oltizeua, at least $160,000 or $200,.
000 annually andbasdonosoformore than thirty-
one years. This money is distributed among
all olasses of the people; and the foot mtkea a
stroog olaim npon publio liberality. -
S. The oollcge has oduoated and is educsting
evety year from ten to twenty pnpils gratui
tously—of all denominations — daughters of
widows, or orphans, or of citizens in moderste
c'.rcnmstanOM; and it is held that this fact
gives It tome tilie to receive aid as a pnbllo in-
atitntlon of great valne.
Many other facts might be stated, bnt these
are believed to bo snffloient to appeal to a jus:
liberality.

When the oommlttee was calling npon the
people soliciting signatures to the memorial, so
many of the best business men of Msoon thought
amount asked for was too email, that the
ommitte* added a brief supplementary peti
tion. raising the amount naked for to ten thou
sand dollars.
As regards the signatures, no stronger memo
rial was ever presented to the City Counoil, and
the Aldermen oould not well have dirregarded
the request. The gentlemen who sign it are
among tho heaviest Ut payers of the city, sod
She Ward oo of the approfriation f*i«* mainly
npon them in the end. Henoe, wa aay, the in
junction is one that the City Council oould cot
well have disobeyed.
Maoon has never made an appropriation to
this school. Nevertheless it is an institution in
which the eity should taka the very deepest In
terset and of which every citizen ebonld be
proud, and the City Council should have passed
iaw appropriation by a unanimous vote. In-
Steed of by s vote of six to five.

Advance In Feres
By referenoe to sn advertisement which ap
pears elsewhere in this issue, it will be seen that
the directors of the Msoon Street Railroad have
determined to advanoe the rate of fere to whit
it was before the reoent change to fire cents.
The directors, after two years’ experience,
satisfied that the new rate, which will take effect
on (he 5ih of Augn t. Is the very lowest
which ptseesgera can be carried without actual
toes of money to the oompany. Certainly the
road should not be asked to accommodate the
people at its own fxpenae, and the commonest
business sagacity will approve the action in this
matter.
This advanoe is a very slight change from
what the fare now Is. Trns, for a singls ticket,
ft Is just doable; bat when parties buy a do!-
Ur's worth, or even a quarter’s worth of UckeU,
the advanoe is only a oent and a quarter
ticket, and will sot he felt by the public, while,
at the same time, the aggregate will be a mate
rial consideration to the oompany.
The stockholders do not expect to derive any
dividend from this advance, nor do they care
to do so. They want to make the road pay ex
penses, and farther than tbit they have very
little concern. They subscribed their money to
the enterprise, because they deemed it to be
public necessity, and they will be entirely satis
fied to know that it la paying expenses.
Improvements In the road are to be made
once which will greatly faciliUte its operations.
The management have resolved to have the oars
run with greater punctuality. They will begin
their trips at half-past six o'clock in the morn
ing—early enoogh for any business man or me-
cbanic in the city—and run regularly until
nine o'clock at night If any unusual occasion
reqnires the running of the cars after that hour,
the oars will bo ran, and the fare will be twenty-
five cents a ticket
The new Board of Directors desire to make
the road as serviceable to the people as possi
ble, and will leave no energy nnUxed which
can contribute to that end. Bat they ask the
support of tho people. The cars are a conve
nience which the people would not willingly
dispense with: therefore, if they want the road
kept np, or if they want other lines constructed,
they muBt erinee such a desire by a liberal pat
ronage to the lines already in operation. We
think that, if the people will do their part, they
will find that the directors will not be remiss in
any particular.
Clay at Lobe Branch. .
J. J. Clay, of Maocn, seems to hare been at
tracting some attention among the Jehus at
Long Branch, by his dextrous handling of the
ribbons; st any rate his driving, together with
bis reoent aocidaut, is getting him into the pa
peri. The correspondents have gotten hold of
him, and are dishing him ont, in quantities to
salt readers. We giro on extract from one
these writers:
Be porter—now does that team compare with
that of Jennings Clay ?
Jenkins—There comes Clay's team cow,
Judge for yourself. He is the best whip at the
Branch. He mnat bare handled the ribbons
five years of ago. See how he sits, sneh a firm
footing on the box. Those dipple grays are
snob raking, rattling leaders they wonld pnll
him eff the box if he did not understand bis
business. I know Clay. Ho is a good fellow,

arrived at the Brsnoh bts team got from under
the oontrot of bis negro ooaohraan, Wimbusb.
The pole felt out and the leaders, Tempest and
Gray Eagle, mado a beo line for the beach at
the ton of their speed, or a, fast as they oould
drsg Flying Cloud and Sunshine, the wheel
horses, aftpr thorn. The dapple grays cleared
the Ooean Hotel fence with a flying leap to
gether. But the white patr struck on the top
of the fence and broke it down, throwing Wim
hash from the box and bruising and catting
him badly. Cay kept bis seat in the landau
uulil it was upset. lie then picked himself up,
and as soon as the horses were caught and
quited had them hitobed np again, menntedthe
box and drove them aronnd several times, and
then to tho stable. As he jumped off the box
ho laughed and said:
Farce, pner, slimnlin, ot fortlss ntero finals.
Do yon know what It means? I don't.
Beporter—I can give yon a free translation.
It means, "Hold 'em together before you hit
’em.” How did you remember the words?
Jenkins—Oh, I got a friend of Clay's, Col.
Wright, of Nashville, to write them down for
me, but I was ashamed to SBk him to translate
them; and to tell yon the truth, I don't believe
bo oould do It any more than myself.
Beporter—I don't suppose ho could. Let'
get a buggy and take a drive.

OBITUARY.
Eisos, Qa. August 1.1873.
It la my painful duty to record the death of Judge
Jozji K. Enraoss, a resident of Houston connty,
who died July 2t, aged ninety yeate and two day*.
He seemed to have a premonition of his death;
told hi* son, Ctpt. Wm- Simmon* he should die in
a few days, and how he wished him to arrange hie
butinees.
Judge Simmons resided in Monroe connty from
1823 to 1860. During the time be fitted many offloe.
of trust, which he did with honor to himself and
family. Ha represented the county of Monroe
(with the Rev. Davie Smith, deceaeed, and the Ber.
Thomas Battle, who now scivive* him, and ia only
h.e junior by one year) in tbe years 1828, 1829 sed
1830-
Jndge Simmon*, after moving to Houston oonnty,
attached himself to the Missionary Baptist Cbnroh,
in which h* lived a coneiatent member up to hr*
death. He had. a* a natural consequence reached
that aga ot dementia; but yet hie mind wae. lucid
when in conversation concerning the gracious gifts
of Heaven. We shall see him no more iu this Ufe.
