I onmer Widowers.
About thin time look out for anramer widow

1 jotoase for tbe next two to o mi While the
pertser* of their lives art enjoying tho oool
breer * at Newport, Bbelter Island, Kahant and
Long Branoh, or the re invigorating pleasures of
Hamoga, they, poor fellows, are blistering thoir
feet on the sidewalks and sweltering in their
placee of business in town. And yet, to be
frack aboat it, they seem to submit to their fate
without much retuctanc. Meel them at a res
taurant aboat 8 o'clock in the morniog, and one
save to the other : .
"•Why, you her'?’*
‘‘Yee, isthe reply. To a widower Just now.
‘Ho am L”
Then they order tenderloins and boile<i eggs,
and soon clear their plates with the keenest ol
appetiUn. To go a atep further, one may say
with a close approximation to tbe truth, that
lh<*y are inclined to enjoy, to revel in this tem
porary .separation from their families. Some,
indeed, act pretty much like boys when school
is out. Not many evenings since, several real
denis of the Heights met on burin® 8 * tbe
Academy of mosio, two of them, with their hair
cropped as dose as it oould be, after the fash
ion which is said to be prevalent at Crow Hit!
and HingBing. In tentorial phrase, their heads
had been “shingled."
“it s so nioe mod cool," said one “I don't
know what my wife would say if she saw it
Bat it will grow oat agsin before she gets back.*
“My wife’s sway, too,*’said tbe other, rub
bing his finger* with delight through the short,
bristly covering of his acalp. “I can’t bear
long hair, os'J have to wear it, so I’ve just hod
it dipped off short."
Tbe more this satjeot Is «xtrained, tbe wider
and deeper it beoomes. There in a oerUin mem

every night, boa a party of jovial friends at hii

cigars, lager beer and poker. Not that he cares
anything sbeut cards himself, in fact he can't
tell a knave from a king, but his wife—good,
pious wcm&n—wonld faint at tbo sight of one.
Ilcnoe, no doubt, tbe fascination tbe game pos
sesses for him, as she is five hundred miles
away. Onoe more. There is a summer widower
whose wife is stopping with some relatives on
tbe shores of Lake Erie. Tbe odor of tobacco
always afflicts her with nausea. With that fact
he is tolerably well acquainted by this time, and
yet there he sits, like a grim Turk, smoking a
pipe in his parlors, in the cool of every evening.
Won't the smell of that tobacco stick to the
curtains and everything else in the room?

From tho Deseret News.]
Oa the IGth instant Mr. Walker, his brother,
Sylveater, and their oouain, John Coon, were
felling timber for Mr. Htandish's mill, in the
right fork of Coon's Canon, about three quar
ters of a mile from tbe point of the monntain
west from this city, on the high peak south of
Black Bock. Between 10 and 11 in tbe morn
ing a deer ran by where they were working, and
our informant snatched up a Sharp's rifle and
started in pursuit. When ho had continued the
chose for about a mile due north, he wss startled
by s loud, shrill whistle and his*, which be at
first thought might be a signal from an Indian.
He came to a halt aod looked about him, and
heard tbe noise of rock's rattling southeast from
where he stood. He turned, when, to bis hor
ror, be saw approaching at a very rapid rate a
serpent, which he judged was between thirty
and forty feet long, and about ten inches
through tbe body.
The reptile’s 'head waa raised fully six feet
from the ground, and his jaws were open fifteen
or eighteeu inches wide, with large fangs grow
ing from both upper and lower jaws. Walker
was almost petrified with fear, but tbe hope ef
saving his own life made him start to rnn. The
serpent, however, was too qaick for him, and
jamped at and knocked him down, striking him
on tho left shoulder just below the shoulder
blade, going over him and down the mountain
to the southwest for a short distance, then he
turned and pursued Walker, who had risen, and
with a speed inspired by the deadliest fear, was
making his way to tbe top of the ridge. Un
fortunately for our informant, he stumbled, and
immediately felt the weight of bis monstrous
pursuer gliding over his body. He gave him
self up for last then, bat it seems hard to tell
which was tbe most frightened, the man or
the soake, for tbe latter did not seem dis
posed to run the risk of a contest, but glid
ing across the bedy of the prostrate man, he
alul off at a tremendous rate towards tbe ridge
of tbe mountain nud across it to tho east side.
Walker rose and watched hts movements, and
says that after crossing to tho cast side, the
Bnake turned and re-crossed to the west side
and went down tbo mountain a few yards, and
then twined himself around a large mahogany
tree, where ho remained, wnvirg his head to
and fro, ffipoing his tail on tbo rockB, and
whistling in <1 hissing defiance. That was the
lAst ho saw of him, for he made his way back
to his companions ns quickly as ho could. They
wanted to return and hunt for the serpent, but
intend to go on an expedition to hunt tbe snake
in • very abort time. Tbe color of tbe reptile
was yellow, with a black mark like a half-moon
on each side of his eyes; he had a beard of fuzz
round his mouth, and wbat appeared to cur in
formant to be a crown-shapcd mass on tho top
of hts head. The latter was About six inches
high, and varied in oolor, being green, blue,
white, yellow and red. The head of tbe crea
ture was about as large as that of a full-grown
bull dog and in shape between that of a bull
dog and a monkey. His body was covered
with hard acales, six or eight inchfs long. Mr.
Walker nay a ho has been used to monntain life
for years, and never was afraid of anything;
but nothing could persuade him to go alone
again into the right hand of Coon's Canyon.

Condition of Trade fn England.
The London DAily News than alludes to the
nQAatiofsoiory condition of trade in Eogland:
Attention baa acew been drawn to tbe state
of trade thron^bont the country by the publica
tion of the Board of Trade returns for June.
We have more than onoe pointed out of late
that this question of tbe state of trade was be
coming of paramount importanoo. The inflated
prices of the last two years wero bnt too certain
to produce a reaction, and after undecided re
turns for some mouths, wo have at length had a
return which Ioavcs the faot in no doubt. A
falling off for one or two months only might
have t>c6n disregarded, as the result of tbe mo-
xueutary npa and downs of trade, but when the
falling off is prolonged for several months, and
is disturbed over a great variety of articles, and
is apparently more marked in eAoh successive
month, tbe reality of the change is fully estab
lished. For a considerable period wo have been
importing less than wo did a year ago of almost
every important raw material of manufacture;
aod we have *
exporting lc*a. There has been comparatively
lime complaint as yet cf falling wages, short
time, and actual want of employment for tbe
masses; but the ahovo facts mean, beyond
question, that there has actually been less
ploymeat thin formerly, that the tendency Is
towards farther diminution, and that accoidmg
to all former experience of tho oscillations of
trade, things must now become worse than they
are before they improve. Bec*nt complaints
of diminiohed employment, though few, have
been quite euffl?u«ut to indicate the beginning
of mischief. Here aud thc-re factories ana
vrork-shops have been closed, while there is
more “working for stock" than there was, and
the vigor of strikes hf.s ceased. The revolts
should not be exaggerated. All theso facts are
quite consistent with tbe bn!k of the industry
of the country being fairly sound and remu
nerative, aud with large profits being made in
some branches. A certain margin of profit is,
however, lost compared with whs! was made a
year or two siuce, and th's margin makes all
the difference between a period of depression
and the reverse. Because trade is net so good
os it was, we mn*t not talk os if tho conotry
was being rained ontright

waa no help for it" I tried everything that was
recommended, but nothing helped me. I saw
your Resolvent, and thought I would try it; but
had uo faiih in it, because 1 had suffered for twelve
years. I took six bottles of the Resolvent, ana
one box of Radway’s Bills, and two bottka of yonr
Beady Belief; and there ia not a eign of tumor to
be seen or felt, and I feel better, smarter, and hap
pier than I have for twelve years. The wor«t tnmor
was in the loft side of the bowels, over the groin.
I write this to you for tho benofit of others. You

An Important letter.
From a prominent gentleman and resident of Cin
cinnati, O., for the past forty years well known to
the book publishers throughout tho United Mates:
New Iobk, October 11, lb70.
Dr. Badway : Dear Hr—I am induced by a senee
of duty to tne suffering to make a brief stoUBMp*
of the working of your medicine on myself. For
several years I had been affected with some trouble
in the bladder and urinary organs, which some
iwelve months ago culminated in a meat terribly
ifflicting disease, which the physicians all talrf was
a spasmodic stricture in the uretha, as aleo itflam-
m&tion of the kidneys and bladler, and gave it as
their opinion that my age—73 years—woo’d pre
vent my *V6T getting radically cured. 1 had tried
a number of physicians, and had taken & large
qaanity of medicine, both aiopathic and hemeoe-
patbic, but hod got no relief. I had read of aston
ishing cures having been made by your remedies?
and some four months ago read a notice in the
Fliilodelphia tiaturday Evening Post of a curs hav
ing been effected ou a person who had loeg been
suffering as I had been. I went right eff and got
some of each—yonr Sarsapariflian Ke/olvent,
Beady Belief, and Regulating Pills—and com
menced taking them. In three days l was greatly
relieved, and now feel as well as ever.
