Reception of the Truck of the Oak
City Hook & Ladder Co.—This line
Truck was received by the Fire Com
panies of the city on Monday last at
the depot, and brought up to tho
Court House Square, where it was
formal'y inspected, received and
turned over to the Oak City Hook &
Ladder Co. Speeches w re delivered
on the occasion by His Honor the
Mayor, Col. Fleming, Col. McGill,
C'upt. Moseley aud John M. Potter,
Esq. Cheers and “tigars” innumera
ble were given for each successive
speaker ; but we believe that of Capt.
Moseley, elicited the most unbounded
admiration.
. TUE truck
Is neat and substantial, with fix
tares of the best quality. The com
m it tee of inspection reported it to be
ready and efficient for active fire ser
vice. We consider it an important
addition to the protection of our
property. The exercises connected
with the reception of i he Track being
over, the gallant foreman of the Oak
City mounted the stand and extend
ed an invitation to the Stonewalls and
the City Council to retire with the
Oak Citys to Belcher’s Block and
there partake of
refreshments
Which were in waiting.. All parties
immediately proceeded to the place
designated, and did full justice to the
occasion. Personal and prairiotic
toas's were drank—with and without
“spikes’*—and general hilarity ruled
the moment. In order to impart the
grand finale to the day it was conclu
ded to have
A DRILL,
Which mot the approbation of both
c unpanies. Immediately the Stone
wall was thundering op the street,
drawn bv as noble firemen as ever
iTonixAl the red ; and with no less
expedition or credit did the Oak Ci
ty boys have their ladders reared up
against the required buildings. Soon
the hose was carried to the top of the
Sharon House—a few s rotes of the
brrkes and the stream with unpar
alleled velocity and ea e was ^-od'ing
the l)ons«s.fiir beyond the Sharon
house. Next the hose wns carried 'o
the roof of Brady’s s o -e, an 1 a pretty
stream, played half across the block
between Water and Broughton
S reefs.
\ fel) satisfied with thq ac’ion of the
I rmk and the Engine, and confident
that fire could make but little pro
“i‘" s against them, the boys retired
for I he day..

Rail toad Surrey.
The survey of the Bainbridge, Cuth-
bert and Columbus railroad will com-
mence from Bainbridge next Monday.
Lol.C. B. Iiarkie, who has been con-
nected with many imijortant railway
eht<-rpnse8, and not very long ago with
the Savannah & Memphis road, will
have charge of the survey. Connect
ed w.th him will be probably several
young men, engine rs, of this city,
•ol- WfUJ in Columbus vesterdHy,
and will return to day. The road will
add largely, when completed, to the
interests, especially the local trade of
this city. In its inception, however,
the ma ner of selecting officers &c.’
the affair has been managed very un-
faii ly. Not a director vyas taken from
Muscogee or Chattabooebee counties.
Both directors and officers were taken
from the lower counties, and the elec
tion of officers was so managed at
Bainbridge tbai the corporators of
this section, by brevity of notice of
meeting, could not be present. With
all this, however, vye are anxious to
see the road started in that direction
from Columbus.
We copy the foregoing from the
Columbus Sun, of the 8th inst. The
complaints against’the injustice done,
in the organization of the Company,
to the people at the other end of the
road, are, so far as wo know, well
foundod ; but nothing can be gained
by complaints now. The road should
be built; and all intelligent minds
must admit that Columbus will be
benefited by it far more than any
other locality ; besides, the present
organization is but for the time being.
