Loss by Fibe—We regret to learn
that a few days since, Mr. H. DnBignon,
who is engaged in plantiug on Jekyl
Island, sustained a heavy loss by fire.
His cotton and corn bouses were con
sumed. Only about two bales of cotton
were saved. Ws nnderstand the loss
amounts to several thousand do.lars.
The fire was the Tesult of accident.—
Brunswick Appeal.
A letter fron Virginia complains of
great scarcity of labor in that State.
The writer says that 75 negroes left
Richmond yesterday for Louisiana,
hiring themselves at $18 and $20 per
month to work on cotton planta-
tations. The exodus from Virginia
southward cf the black elemtent of her
population, has recently been quite
large, and instead of diminishing,
seems to be increasing with the rigor
of the season.

Bubning of the Stonewall.—A ter
rible disaster occurred on the Missis
sippi in the burning of the steamer
Stonewall. The fire originated from
a candle which had been left between
the bales of hay which were on board,
by a party of deck passengers who
were playing a “quiet game of cards.”
As soon as it was discovered that the
boat was on fire, the pilot headed for
the shore, but she grounded on a
bar some two hundred from the bank
of the river, and which extended but
a short distance. The flames soon
enveloped the boat, crowding the
passengers and crew into the river,
of whom over two hundred were
drowned.

GENERAL COMMISSION MERCHANT,
employed a stout negro boy aged
about eighteen years. Friday morn
ing Mr. Watson carried two bales
of cotton to Opelika and sold them,
realizing some two hundred dollars.
On his return, almost within reach of
his home, he was met by this negro,
who knocked him down and bout out
his brains, robbed him and departed.
Subsequently the negro was arrested
in Columbus and identified. He had
squandered most of the money, hav
ing equiped himself and a friend with
revolvers, new clothes, etc.

The Vicksburg Times reiterates the
charge that <Satrap Ames, commanding
in Mississippi, declared he wonld defeat
Dent for Governor, if he had to march
troops from precinct to precinct on the
day of the election. When Grant’s at
tention was called to this threat, Ames
denied the charge; but the denial was
extremely vague and general, and bore
an appearance of oonacious guilt. The
Times says: “With regard to the dis
patch in question, when Gen. Ames con
descends to answer the same specially
denying its exact terms and import, the
matter will then be narrowed down to a
simple question of veracity between him
and two of the most credible witnesses
to be found in the State of Mississippi.
They stand ready to verify on oath their
statement in tbe affair, and we shall see
who will be believed.”

The Ohio Patriot has the following
true story:
When the good old Democratic party
was in power, did yon hear of spies nos
ing among your private goods to see if
you had complied with an unknown and
unpublished law ?
Did you ever hear of stamps ?
Did you ever have to swear to how
much money you made ?
If a manufacturer, did yon have to
make a monthly report to some lazy
official at five and ten dollars per day ?
Did you hear men advoeate the policy
of paying laborers with paper rags and
rich men with gold ?
Did yon hear of tax on everything you
eat and wear ?
Did yon hear of a President riding
abont in a steamboat wholly to his own
use at the expense of the people, when
he was receiving $25,0110 per year ?
Did yon ever hear that a negro was
better than a white man ?
