Dec. 25, 1869,
Dr. Hilton Screven Jones, onr
New Mayor.
The citizens of Bainbridge have
done themselves an honor by placing
at the head of our city government
a gentleman so well qualified to fill
the position with dignity and efficien
cy. Dr. Jones has a record of which
any one might be proud, and’ we
are gratified at being able to present
an important portion of it to our
readers, whioh, it will be seen, is
sufficient to disclose the man, and
prove his worthiness and fitness for
the position he now fills as Mayor of
# ihe city of Bainbridge.
Dr. Hilton Screven Jon£s is a
native of Savannah, Ga. He gradu
ated in Physic in tho city of Phila
delphia in 1852, served, by appoint
ment, as Assistant Surgeon in the
United States service in tbe_ Billy
Bowlegs, or Seminole War, in 1856
uml 1857; was engaged in several
Indian fights or battles in the Ever
glades of Florida; resumed ervil
practice, at the close of the Treaty,
in the delightful village of Ocala,
East Florida.
In 1860, Dr. Jones removed to
Memphis, Tenn., where he pursued
"his profession, in city practice, until
the breaking out of the War between
the States. Ho enlisted early,-as a
private, in Lieut. Colonel Forest’s
(afterwards, Lieut. General Forest)
Batallion;' but soon after received
tho appointment of Assistant Surgeon
in the 38th (Tenn.) Regiment, (In
fantry) comma nded by Cot Looney
Immediately af ter the babble of Fish
ing Creek, he wa s relieved,-and made
Assistant Medici vl director of the
Department of Ea st Tennessee; and
Siilwvpnn in f>hiyjrn of Hosriitals at
Carthage, Tenn., and Commandant of
that Post. Me nfterw ttfds returned
to duty iu the 38th Ten u. Regiment;
participated in tho batt.of Shiloh,
having his horso wounded during the
engagement; went before . the Medi-
• cal Examining Board, and p. 'ssed as
Surgeon. He afterwards ft. '4 into
tho hands of the enemy at Perr, *viRe;
Kentucky, and was ordered *“1°
• close confinement in Louisville. H 9rer
i he remained in prison sometime, an'd
money matters.
Everybody sympathises with Billy,
and would advise him to profit by
bis present experience, should he
ever again be tempted to aspire to
the position of postmaster in a great
big town like this. At least, they
would advise him to be particular in
bis appointments of deputies, and to
enquire beforehand whether they bad
ever been convicted of stealing, in
the first degree.
We will not accuse all Southern
Radicals with being rogues and ras
cals, but we think it would be the
safer and wiser poliey not to trust
any of them, if it could be helped,
with an office, high or low, or place
of trust and, responsibility. Deia©-
crats, ei knowte integrity and capac
ity, should always be preferred, not
from party motives, but on account

Work for the Month*
JANUARY.
In a short artiele, like the present, it
is not expected that a full description of
all the work on a farm can be given. All
the work on the farm during the month
of January, is only preparatory to the
crop.
The werk done on the farm du
ring this month, whether it is little or
mueby whether it is weli done or badly
done,- will lay tho found at ion for either
a good or a bad crop. The first thing
which engages the time of a successful
farmer within the next few dav9, is the
erection aifd repairs of his fences, and
if not yet done, he will see that his sta
bles and lots for all his domestic an-iovals
arc in a condition to make' the greatest
amount of manure possible. It is a
great advantage, during this month, to
clean the land well of everything that
would impede or obstruct the plow and
hoe, both in the breaking up of the land
and its every future cultivation. Earlv
corn and co^on stalks should be placed
in small heaps- amd burned. The ashes
resulting from this combustion is infi
nitely of more advantage to the land
than to allow them to rot on the ground,
obstructing the plow and hoe for at
least two crops.
It is of little importance to plow much
during this month, except new lands.
Permit the plow teams to rest ami grow
fat, preparatory to the impending great
battle which is fast approaching.
The manure already made_ should,
during the present month, be carried to
the fields ready to bedspread, according
to the notion of each farmer, when the
proper time arrives. The cotton seed
intended for manure should be killed in
the shortest 'possible time in order to
prevent the fescape of their fertilizing
princioleiu the form of smoke or gas.

Allowing that four Democrats in

Interesting to Meat Buyers.—
These who have meat to buy will
read the following letter, which ws
find in the Atlanta Constitution :
St. Louis, Dec. 24, 186#'.
Editor Constitution. : You wil^see,-
from last quotations in tlxis and
other western markets, that the arti
cle of pork has declined from $3 to
$5 per barrel.
All the people of the South should
do, is to hold off and’ not buy until
they are compelled, .to get cheap
meats. Let them use up all their
surplus before baying a barrel of
pork at present rates. Sixty days
hence they will get mpS3 pork $5 per
barrel cheaper than now.-
There is no outlet for the packing
this season but to the Southern coun
try, and Sk Louis, Chicago, and Cin
cinnati are full of hog meats.
They can not ship East or to Eu
rope at present prices, and the only
market is the South. The South
would act the fool to come in, and
help these hog and provision sharks
to sustain the market.
No, let the planters hold off, and
both use and buy sparingly, and they
have the game in their own hands
this season. Flour $5 to $6 ; beef
10 to 12c ; and pork 30 to 32—“Shoo
fly, don’t bottler me !’’
Yours.

The Ccthbert Appeal.—This paper,
edited bf Col. H. H. Jones, we consider
one of the ablest papers published in the
State of Georgia, and one of the truest
published anywhere. It is indefatiga-
hie i<&ts efforts to promote the inter
ests of the B. C. <fc Cr Railroad, and
hence, as well aa for its intrinsic! merits
as a family and news journal, the peo
ple of Bainbridge should give it a gen
erous support. We would be pleased to
see a hundred subscribers for it in our
city. Its subscription price is $2.00.
The paper is Worth five tunes that
amount.
The State Road.—The Atlanta
Constitution says Foster Blodgett has
entered upon the discharge of the
duties of Superintendent of the State
Road ; A. L. Harris became Master
of Transportation, the office of Su
pervisor being merged with that po
sition ; W. H. Stalling, Treasurer ;
James Mullen, Master Machinist.
We learn that a good many of the
sub officers have tendered their res
ignations.

the other day we found an uopublish-

from which we take the following quaint
