POETRY.
BY W. 185
Mother, when round the family altar kneeling,
In prayer to him who reigns oif high.
When o’er thee comes the influence stealing
Os horn* and happiness beyond the sky—
Say, is there not one plea to him ascending
Who sits in love and justice on his throne,
From her whose knees in pious rev’rence bend
ing
For one who from her side hath long been
gone.
Dues not that plea ascend in love and joy
TV Haven, in mediation for thy boy.
Brother, when through familiar scenes thou’rt
straying
Docs mem’ry bring me once more to thy side,
As by thy side in boyish spirit playing
I claimed thee as protector and as guide;
Or when from youth to firmer manhood growing
We formed a nobler, holier compact still,
Our feelings in one channel flowing
To love and cheerish in each joy and ill.
Say, does time yet tend to smother,
That feeling for thy absent brother.
Sister, when round thee sweetly smiling,
Thy little ones in careless, prattling glee,
Who oft thy care and sorrows are beguiling,
Is there no loving thoughts bestowed on me?
Or has time, with despoiling finger,
Effaced the vestige of my image there;
Or does thy love with fondness quiet linger
Like music’s echo on still evening’s air?
Say, tell me time shall never smother,
The love once cherished for a brother.
The late condition of tilings at Wash
ington is pretty well hit off in the follow
ing doggerel taken from the St. Louis Bul
letin :
THE SPEAKERSHIP.
Bocock ninety-four—Gilmer twenty-seven—
Boteler sixty-two—Sherman a hundred eleven—
One or two for Grow—
The same for (Mark and Hill;
Alas! ’tis all no go,
The wheels must yet stand still.
(’hating and chewing the cud,
Like a mad horse under the bit,
The Senate, with heated and angry blood,
From day to day must sit.
Kellogg makes a speech—Logan pitches in,
The galleries look on to see which one will win
The voice of one is high,
The other getteth higher,
Ouc bravely says ‘‘You lie!’’
The other—“ You’re a liar!’’
So goes it, from day to day,
And thus, from week to week,
Our wise men throw’ their time away,
In hearing each other speak.
Hon. W. A. 11. Smith.
On Tuesday, the 31st of January, in the
House, before the voting for Speaker com
menced, Mr. Smith, of N. Carolina, with
drew his name from nomination, in a short
speech which has l>een universally spoken,
of as eloquent, conservative, and in its tone
conciliatory. \Ye take the following re
port of it from the National Intelligencer :
Mr. SMITH, of North Carolina. I can
not find language, sir, adequate to convey
to members of this body my deep sense of
obligation tc honorable gentlemen of vari
ous political opinions and sentiments for
the honor which they have endeavored to
confer upon me by placing me in that chair
and entrusting me with the high and im- j
portant responsibility of presiding over the j
deliberations of this body. When I recol
lect. sir, how much of sacrifice must have
been incurred, how much gentlemen have
giver, up in the patriotic effort to concen
trate the votes of this House upon some in
dividual that stood upon national and
properly conservative ground; and when 1 ;
remember also, sir, that I myself, with a j
name unknown to fame, now making my
entry upon this floor for the first time, have
received the honor of so large and honora
ble a vote as has been conferred upon me,
I can only say, sir, that I shall cherish du
ring the residue of my official term, while
a member of this body, and carry with me
into the shades of private life, when my
public service is ended, a grateful
and abiding sense of those deep obligations
under which gentlemen have placed me. —
But, sir, without detaining you siuce it is
not the proper occasion, to go into any
matters of detail, I will here take the lib
erty of saying that I am satisfied that the
presentation of my name longer before this
body, would not contribute towards the suc
cess of the wishes of those gentlemen who
have so cordially and steadily sustained
me. I beg leave now, sir, before another
ballot is taken, to withdraw my name as a
candidate before this body, and to say that
I hope that the indications which are now
presenting themselves in this body may be
the harbingers of returning good will a
mong all the States ot this Confederacy,
ami that we may, in the preservation of an
intact and inviolate Constitution, and a
guarantee of the rights of every part of our
Confederacy, and our glorious and blessed
Union be perpetuated to the remotest peri
od of time. [Applause.]
man who had recently been
elected a major of militia, and who was
not overburdened with brains, took it in
to his head, on the morning of parade, to
exercise a little by himself. The field se
lected for the purpose was his own apart
ment. Placing himself in a military atti
tude, and with his sword drawn, he ex
claimed :
‘•Attention, company ! Rear rank, three
paces, march !” and he tumbled down into
the cellar. His wife, hearing the racket,
came running in, saying :
“My dear, have you killed yourself ?”
“Go about your business, woman,” said
the hero, “what do you know about war?”

THE LIVER
INVIGORATOR!
PREPARED BY DR. SANFORD,
Compounded entirely from Gums,
IS ONE of the best purgative and Liver Medicines
now before the public, that acts as a Cathartic, ea
sier. milder, and more effectual than any other medi
cine known. It is not only a Cathartic, but a Liver
remedy, acting first on the Liver to eject its morbid
matter, then on the stomach and bowels to carry off
that matter, thus accomplishing two purposes effectu
ally. without any of the painful feelings experienced in
the operations of most Cathartics. It strengthens the
system at the same time that it purges; and when ta
ken daily in moderate doses, will strengthen and build
it up with unusual rapidity.
The Liver is one of the .principal regulators of the
human body; and when it • performs its functions
well, the powers of the S3 system are fully develop
ed. The stomach is al- £ most entirely dependent
on the healthy action of the Liver for the proper
performance of its func tions; when the stomach
is at fault, the bowels arc at fault, and the whole
system sutlers in conse pm quenee of one organ—the
Fixer—having ceased to Q do itsduty. For the dis
eases of that organ, one of the proprietors has
made it his study, in&M practice of more than
twenty years, to find some remedy wherewi t h to
counteract the many derangements to which it is
liable. £
To prove that this rem-S edy is at last found, any
person troubled with Liv- er Complaint, in any of its
forms, has but to try a W ‘bottle, and conviction is
certaiu.
These Gums remove all morbid or had matter
from the system, supply- m* ing in their place a heal
thy flow of bile, invigora- mm ting the stomach, causing
food to digest well, puri- lying the blood, giving
tone and health to the whole machinery, remov
ing the cause of the dis- ease—effecting a radical
cure. :
Billious attacks a r ej£ cured, and what is better,
prevented, by the occa-£ sional use of the Liver In
vigorator.
One dose after is sufficient to relieve the
stomach and prevent the food from rising and sour
ing.
Only one dose taken SC before retiring, prevents
Nightmare.
Only one dose taken at night, loosens the bowels
gently, and cures Costiveness.
One dose taken after each meal will cure Dyspepsia.
f fT One dose of two teaspoonfuls will always relieve
Sick Headache.
One bottle taken for female obstruction removes the
cause of ‘he disease, and makes a perfect cure.
Only one dose immediately relieves Cholic, while one
dose often repeated is a sure cure for Cholera Morbus,
and a preventive of Cholera.
£"§?■ Only one bottle is needed to throw out of the
system the effects of medicine after a long sickness.
5 One bottle taken for Jaundice removes all sal
lowness unnatural color from the skin.
One dose taken a short time before ea‘‘ :g gives vig
or to the appetite, and makes food digest well.
One dose often repeated cures Chronic Diarrhoea in
its worst forms, w .e Summer and Bowel complaints
yield almost to the first dose.
One or two doses cures attacks caused by Worms in
Children ; there is no surer, safer, or speedier remedy
in the world, as it never fails.
I A few bottles cures Dropsy, by exciting the ab
sorbents.
We take pleasure in recommending this medicine as
a preventive for Fever and Ague. Chill Fever, and all
Fevers of a Billions Type. It operates with certainty,
and thousands are willing to testify to its wonderful
virtues.
All who use it are giving their unanimous testimony
in its favor.
[ Mix Water in the mouth with the Invigorator,
and swallow both together.
THE LIVER IA VI (4 ORATOR
Is a Scientific Medical Discovery, and is daily working
cures, almost too great to believe. It cures as if by
magic, even the first dose giving benefit, and seldom
more than one bottle is required to cure any kind of
Liver Complaint, from the worst Jaundice or Dyspep
sia to a common Headache, all of which are the result
of a DISEASED LIVER.
Price One Dollar per Bottle.
