Earthly aud Heavenly imeVeyf.
Ben Adam liad a golden coin one day,
Which he put out at interest with a Jew;
Year after year, awaiting him, it lay,
Until the doubled coin two pieces grew,
And these two, sou on, till people said,
“How rich Ben Adam is!” and bowed the
servile head.
Ben Selim had a golden coin that day,
Which to a stranger, asking alms, he gave,
Who went rejoicing on his unknown way —
Ben Selim died, too poor to own a grave,
But when his .soul reached Heaven, angels with
pride
Showed him the wealth to which his coin had
multiplied.
The doings of the House of Rep
resentatives have been aptly illustrated by
the Philadelphia Journal, in anew version
of “Mother Goose
‘‘There were Congressmen in Washington
And they were wondrous wise,
They balloted, until they found
They could not organize;
And when they found this would not do,
With all their might and main,
They got ‘advances’ on their pay,
And—balloted again.”
“Hey diddle diddle,
The ‘chair’ in the middle!
The ‘Congress’ will organize soon !
The Lobby men laugh to see the sport,
And all feed from the National spoon.”
* PUNCH.
Suggesting “reforms” reminds me of the
London Punch, the most radical and ef
fective “reformer” of the age. Many a
fashionable folly has been stabbed by its
epigrams, and many a “reverend vice and
grave iniquity” lias been toppled down by
its corrosive satires. Its blows, always
dealt in behalf of suffering humanity, are
more feared in England than the anathe
mas of the Church or the edicts of the
Crown. One of its latest sarcasms, under
the guise of exceeding loyalty, is the fol
lowing anthem, which may be regarded as
the requiem to crinoline :
O storm of scorn arise,
Scatter French fooleries,
And make them pall.
Confound those hoops and things,
Frustrate those horrid springs,
And India rubber rings,
Deuce take them all!
May dresses flaunting wide
Fine figures cease to hide;
Let feet be seen ;
Girls to good taste return,
Paris flash modes unlearn,
No more catch fire and burn.
Thanks tothe queen!
Long live our gracious queen
Who won’t wear crinoline.
Long live the queen !
May her example spread
Broad skirts be narrowed,
Long trains be shortened,
Long live the queen !
X The Cincinnati Commercial, refer
ing to the Union Festival that lias just
lighted up the heart of the Republic, says:
The States of Tennessee, Kentucky,
Ohio, and Indiana are watered by the same
rivers, and the hearts of the people are a
glow with kindred blood. Tennessee, Ken
tucky, and Ohio have their representative
men on the immortal pages of the history
of our country in the names of Jackson,
Clay, and Harrison. They have their rep
resentative trees, famous in romantic le
gend and the stories of political campaign
—the Hickory, the Ash, and the Buckeye.
They share, and share alike, among them
the glory of war and the profit of peace.—
So long as the Tennessee, the Cumberland,
the Kentucky, Kanawha, Muskingum, Sci
oto, Miami, and Wabash flow out to the
father of floods in one splendid stream-and
the hickory, the ash, and the buckeye—
the liberty trees of the several States —
shall mingle their foliage in the forests on
the soil of each—the names of our illustri
ous heroes and statesmen shall shine in 1
the same national constellation—in war j
and in peace our enemies will be the com
mon enemy and our friends mutual; and
we shall be united in those manly and pa
triotic sympathies which are stronger than
constitutions and commercial channels—
parchments, navigable rivers, and iron
roads—in binding our sovereign States to- j
get her, a potent nation. If we are true to
ourselves, our sympathies, as common
wealths, will run like our rivers, and form
a national current free for us all and gen
erous to us all. To it we may commit with
security the priceless freight of our history
and our hopes as a people. And it will
not only fertilize our own laud, that it !
may be prolific of our good deeds aim. abun- j
dant in generous sentiments, but like the j
gult stream, it will sweep through the seas
that girdle the globe, and pour its cease
less impulses like the incessant waves a
gainst other continents.
Remarkable Movement.—Petitions,
of which the following is a copy, are now
in circulation in western Pennsylvania for
presentation to the Legislature of that
State :
ll To the Honorable the Senate and House
of licprcsentatives of the Commonwealth
Pennsylvania, in General Assembly
met :
“Your petitioners humbly repiesent that
the rapid growth of the free negro popula
tion by immigration, within a brief period,
is not only a burden to your petitioners,
bv increasing demands on our poor fund,
but owing to their great indolence and dis
sipation, they have filled our prisons, thus
increasing our taxes to an enormous extent.
The recent raid at Harper’s Ferry, will re
sult in stringent laws by the Southern
States for the expulsion of free negroes
tron their limits: so we must shortly have
thousands more oi those unfortunate crea
tures thrown upon us, many of them in
the decline of life, or otherwise incapacita
ted for labor. The exigency calls upon
your honorable body to adopt some meas
ure to prevent an increase of our already
burdened condition. If your honorable
body has not the power to prevent their
emigration to this State, we would prefer
* slave code,”

THE LIVER
IIXr'^7"XGV-Ol : S.^.^r , C>3El. 2
PREPARED BV DR. SANFORD,
Compounded entirely from Gums,
IS ONE of the best purgative and Liver Medicines
now before the public, that acts as a Cathartic, ea-
I sier, milder, and more effectual than any other medi-
I cine known. It is not only a Cathartic, hut a Liver
I remedy, acting first on the Liver to eject its morbid
j matter, then on the stomach and bowels to carry off
that matter, thus accomplishing two purposes effectu
ally, without any of the painful feelings experienced in
the operations of most Cathartics, it strengthens the
system at the same time that it purges; and when ta
ken daily in moderate doses, will strengthen and build
it up with unusual rapidity.
The Liver is one of the principal regulators of the
human body; and when it • performs its functions
well, the powers of tlieS- system are fully develop
ed. The stomach is al 0 most entirely dependent
on the Healthy action of s he Liver for the proper
performance of its functions; when the stomach
is at fault, the bowels are at fault, and the whole
system suffers in eonse quence of one organ—the
Li.ver —having ceased to 0 do itsduty. For the dis
eases of that organ, one o of the proprietors has
made it his study, in an> practice of more than
twenty years, to find some remedy wherewith to
counteract the many derangements to which it is
liable. £
To prove that this rem-i edy is at last found, any
person troubled with Liv- er Complaint, in any of its
forms, has but to try a bottle, and conviction is
certain. .
These Gums remove all morbid or had matter
from the system, supply- mg in their place a heal
thy flow of bile, invigora ting the stomach, causing
food to digest well, puri- tying the blood, giving
tone and health to the ’xf± Whole machinery, remov
ing the cause of the dis- ease—ejecting a radical
cure. jW
Billions attacks aref£ cured, and what is better,
prevented, by the occa 0 sional use of the Liver In
vigorator. r
One dose after eating 5 is sufficient to relieve the
stomach and prevent the food from rising and sour
ing. W
Only one dose taken GB before retiring, prevents
Nightmare. i j
Only one dose taken at night, loosens the bowels
gently, and cures Costiveness.
One dose taken after each meal will cure Dvspepsia.
J One dose of two teaspoonfuls will always relieve
Sick Headache.
One bottle taken for female obstruction removes the
cause of the disease, and makes a perfect cure.
Only 011 c dose immediately relieves Cholic, while one
dose often repeated is a sure cure for Cholera Morbus,
and a preventive of Cholera.
lOnlyl Only one bottle is needed to throw out of the
system the effects of medicine after a long sickness.
One bottle taken for Jaundice removes all sal
lowness or unnatural color from the skin.
One dose taken a short time before eating gives vig
or to the appetite, and makes food digest well.
One dose often repeated cures Chronic Diarrhoea in
its worst forms, while Summer and Bowel complaints
yield almost to the first dose.
One or two closes cures attacks caused by Worms in
Children ; there is no surer, safer, or speedier remedy
in the world, as it never tails.
£ <f” A few bottles cures Dropsy, by exciting the ab
sorbents.
We take pleasure in recommending this medicine as
a preventive for Fever and Ague, Chill Fever, and all
Fevers of a Billious Type. It operates with certainty,
and thousands are willing to testify to its wonderful
virtues.
All who use it are giving tlieir unanimous testimony
in its favor.
£ Mix Water in the mouth with the Invigorator,
and swallow both together.
THE LIVER INVIGORATOR
Is a Scientific Medical Discovery, and is daily working
cures, almost too great to believe. It cures as if by
magic, even the first dose giving benefit, and seldom
more than one bottle is required to cure any kind of
Liver Complaint, from the worst Jaundice or Dyspep
sia to a common Headache, all of which are the result
of a DISEASED LIVER.
Price One Dollar per Bottle.
