Nkwsp aphis.—Persons who will take the
Southern newspapers of a twelve-month
ago, and the newspapers of to-day will bo
astonished at the comparison. They have
sloughed of the dirge and yellow of war
times, and have come out on fair white sheets
of comfortable proportions. Most of them
have new type, and appear as well as though
their dress had never been worn threadbare.
We regard it as an evidence of prosperity
■which is encouraging to the profession. Few
Southern newspapers were in a healthy fi
nancial condition at the close k ot the war
Most of them were somewhat embarrassed to
make tbeirjmeans sufficient unto their ends.
But they have come gloriously out of that,
and to see their comely appearance now, one
can hardly think that, a year ago, they were
published on little, dingy, band-bill sheets
that were scarcely legible.
And the papers are not few nor far be
tween. Every town has its paper. Some
very small towns have two or three of them.
Weeklies, semi-weeklies and tri week ies
come to us from all quarters. All appear to
haveathrf y amount of advertising—many
of them so much so, as to exclude a fair
amount of reading msttec.
Another improvement it noticeable in their
editorial management. During the war, it
suited the convenience of certain individuals
to monopolize, to a very great extent, news
paper business. These men were not exceed
ingly well adapted to the business, but it
served a certain purpose better than any
other occupation that could be hit upon, so
they used them and the consequence was, a
great many papers were very poorly edited.—
But newspapers now are in the bands of men
who have a taste f r it, and who are making a
direct, instead of an indirect, means of sup
port. The result may be reasonably conjec
tured. If a man wishes to live on the profits
of a newspaper, he must have a good paper
or he will be swamped. Hence a decided im
provement has been manifested in the man
agement of the papers. There is more abili
ty in the editorials, and more energy in the
business departments. They will soon regain
their former influence and dignity, and once
more become a power in the land
We hope they will continue to improve in
number and manner and matter. We don’t
care if each one comes out as big as a blan
ket. Nor if each one has “the largest circu
lation.” We want them all to succeed and
make .their “we ’ a terror to demagogues
and other rogues. We want to see the
printing press palpitating the thunder-beats
of its heart all along the arteries of the na
tion, diffusing vitality and information to the
whole people.
Pcrrs.—A notice appears in each of the
three Louisville papers in which the publish
ers declare their determination to exclude
from their local and editorial columns, all
puffs and notices of business houses. Such
notices must appear henceforth in a column
designed especially forthem under the caption
of “ Local notices.
The system of indiscriminate puffing prac
ticed by most Southern newspapers has long
been a bore to newspaper editors and news
paper readers. They trespass upon space
which should be devoted to matters of general
interest, while the benefit to the “ puffed”
party is very questionable. The endorsement
of a business house, by a paper which en
dorses every one that advertises through its
columns, is utterly worthless. The public
smiles as it reads it, and goes its way, won
dering that the editor could be so induced to
prostitute bis high calling. But advertisers
do not see it in that light. They have a
goading peneh mt for eulogiz ition, and insist
on the customary puff. They get it in most
cases and the consequence is the publication
of a daily column of matter totally uninteres
ting to the general reader, and utterly rep
rehensible aud unworthy a dignified and in
fluential newspaper. The reader looks to the
local column for news. It is no matter of
interest to him to read that Dunderbunk has
got the “nicest goods in town” when he
knows bellemquick has just as nice, though
he don’t advertise in that paper. Nor does be
care to read that the “ Devil’s den” has got
the best whisky in town, while he knows that
Hell's.half-way-house” has it just as good
•nd as cheap. The reader wants no such
matter forced under his eye every time he
takes up hi- m irning paper. On the contra,
ry he wants a daily summary of what is going
on in the city aud out of it.
It would be a matter of accommodation to
us, and justice to our readers, if advertisers
would be kind enough to endorse on their
fovors “ No puff.”

FrciT Crop.—We fear very greatly that the
present mild .weather is furnish, d us at the
expense of the fruit crop ot next summer.—
We saw some peach trees nearly a week ago
that were nearly bursting into full bloom. All

thing we know our prospects for fruit will be
“nipped in the bud.”

CEDRON BITTERS.
The Latest and IWost Important
DISCOVERY
OF TUB
CENTURY
No man’s name Is more Intimately connected with tho
history of MATERIA MEDICA of the United States, or
more favorably known as a pioneer in Medical Discove
ry, than that of
John Bull, of Louisville, Keutucky.
His inimitable preparation cf Sar»*parillt>, has
long stood at the head us the various compounds of that
valuable drug.
His Compound of Wild Cherry has be
come a household word
throughout the
West
His Worm Losen
g«s, in less than a year
after their introduction, attained a
deputation «r wide spread as th© continent of North
almerica. But the crowuingg'ury of his life remains to
be attained in hit discovery, or raUier combination, for
he docs not claim to have been the discover of CED
KON, which is the basis wf the Bitters now offered ti
tho pubdc. That hunor belongs io the native inhabi
tants of Central America, to whom its virtues have been
known for more tnan two hundred years. Armtid with
it the Ifid'au bids (1. finice to the moH deadly maiuri i
and handles, without fear, th* ni »st venomous serpent”.
It is a belief with them, that while there is breath in tne
body, the Cedron is potent to cure, no matter what the
cas<- may be.
While Dr. Bull is not prepared to endorse this fxlf «va
gant pretension, he is nevertheless satisfied from a
thorough examination oi tho evidence relating to itfi
virtues, that asa remedy and preventative for al! ds
eafics arising from exposure, either to change of weather
or climate, or to miasmatic influence?) it stands
’W/itlxouLt rt rival!
And justly deserves the reputation it
has long enjoyed in Central America
and the West Indios.
IN DYSPEPSIA
And its attendant train of symptoms it acts more Like
a Charm than a medicine, lhere is nothing in tho
whole range o Materia Med.ci that can fora moment
bear a comparisoa with it in this disvasi.
A full account of this wonderiUl p.aut may bo found in
the 11th edition of the United S ales Dispensatory, pages
1387 ami 18¥8.
A swR»-#oi experiments in which Dr. Bull has been for
years engaged, has just been br light to a successful
lerminaiiqp. and he is n »w enabled to iff jr the public a
combina'i n ot Cedron with other approved tonics,
the wQ' le preset vea n the best quality of copper distill
ed B -urbon Whisky, which he is confident has no equal
in tue
He might furnish a volume of certificates, but the
pubdc have long since learned to estimate eueb things
by their true value. Ihe safest plan is, for ©very one
to testier himself the virtues of a new medicine.
