New York, March 19. Tho Herald's
Washington special gives the following facts
regarding tho reported President’s interfer
ence in the municipal election of New Or
leans: Mr. Kennedy, the present Mayor, tele
graphed to the President on lhe 16ili insi.,
expressing doubts as to tho fitness of his suc
cessor elect, Mr. Monroe, and inquiring wheth
er or not he should yield the succession. The
President replied by Telegreph ns follows:
“I have no information to give in regard to
surrendering the mayoral of New Orleans to
the personielected to fill the position. I have
no information showing the election was not
regular, or the individual who has been elect
ed cannot quallify. In the absence of such
proof, the presumption is that tue election
has been according to law, and the person
elected can take the oath of allegiance and
loyalty required.”
Mr. Monroe seems to have known that ef
forts were being made to keep him out of of
fice, and also telegraphed to the President
yesterday that he had been regularly elected
Mayor of New Orleans, and that he was loyal
to the Union, aqd as enthusiastically in favor
of the reconstruction policy of the President
as any living man, and can qualify according
to law. The President replied to this by re
peating the telegram sent to Kennedy, thus
leaving the matter where it begins, viz: with
the people of New Orleans, and the civil and
military laws that govern such cases.
Washington, March 19.—President John
son yesterday received a dispatch from A. J.
Hamilton, Provisional Governor of Texas,

nance of secession should be merely repealed
or declared absolutely null from the begin
ning.
New York, March 19.—Fourteen days later

Royal Committee of Inquiry into the causes
and suppression of the recent revolt was still

Halifax, March 19.—There is great excite
ment here, and startling rumors are afloat.—
The Royal and Provincial artillery are main
taining all the Forts. A proclamation has
been issued callingout the militia.
Montreal, C. W., March 18—Reports from
all the principal towns in the Province, re
ceived last night, show that no outbreak has
occurred anywhere.
Royal speeches were made, and a general
readiness was manifested to nip any Fenian
demonstration in the bud in the shortest pos
sible time.
Apprehension of any successful raid or in
vasion have subsided, but preparations are
not relaxed. It is reported that an attempt is
threatened about the 22d inst., but the Or
angemen of the province are ready at a mo
ment’s warning.
New York, March 18.—Mayor Hoffman
rose from a bed of sickness to leceive the col
umn of Fenians yesterday, and remained at
his post in front of the City Hall for only
half an hour, when excessive fatigue com
pelled him to retire.
The Times’ Montreal correpondent says
that the drain upon the Savings Bank has
been quite important. Depositors residing
fully fifty miles from Montreal have been ar
riving in hot haste’during the past four days
to relieve their little all from seizure by the
Fenians. An increase of the volunteer force
to 25,000 men is highly probable, and in ad
dition to this there is a probability of aiming
a home guard of 10,000 men. The volunteers
now organized cost $50,000 per day. The
support of each man exclusive of arms and
ammunition rnpplied by the British Govern
ment, may be fairly estimated at tweety dol
lars per man. We have, therefore, since
Thursday last, when men came first under
pay, a colonial expenditure of $550,000 in
gold.
Washington, March 19 —A large number
of the citizens of the Northern Territories
met in Washington on Saturday, for the pur.
pose of expresssing their views as to the
practicability of the proposed Northern route
of the Pacific Railroad. A committee of five
was appointed to propose an address, urging
Congress to grant the aid asked for, after
which the meeting was addressed by several
gentlemen present.
The shipment of fractional currency last
week by the Treasury Department, amounted
to $338,000 was forwarded to the Sub-Tlreas
ury in New York.
