Letter from Montgomery.
M.INTO IMERV, Ai.v . March 20. 1866.
A recent flying visit over portions ol Central
and Nmitiem Alabama convinces me of severs
al tnincs. First, that greenbacks are not so
numerous as one night suppose. Second, that
il not in the country now, money insufficient
quantities to answer the immediate and more
pressing v ants of the people will be forth
coming eaily next iall as soon as the Cotton
crop is gathered. Perhaps you have heard,
seen or read ot different things “on the brain,”
but il these Alabamians hnve’nt Cotton there,
then they have nothing. 1 would surprise you
10 no" lhe < lf>rt that is being made by every
farmer, great arid sm ill, to raise some of the
ample. The sl> If ol life, it seems, is lost sight
of entirely; ai.d a.I hands are betiding their
energies io lhe culture ot Cotlou. The pros
pi'C’, so far, is very eucou aging. Some of the
flu. st lands I eve,' huh, are, to-day, being
pia.ded in Colton. 1 lie ireudmeu, as a general
thing, ure doing as well as could be expected,
ami nil aie io high hopes of a good yield.
Ttiis is not die city of six or eight years age.
Lk i neatly every other Soinhein town, it bas
dll mid seen the desolating baud of war. The
numerous, large ami capacious Colton ware
bolisei tin', stood here were all destroyed by
ih' F dvrul-. C“mm"ie", though considered
brisk ior Ihe season, is piiu'ully dull tonne
who has not seen the city since the new order
of things. Cotton still eimiiniii s to come in
pretty tree'y Iroin lhe surrounding country.—
Prices though have fallen elf nearly fifty per
cent willi nti n days. Three days since it sold
11 Itn 25 to 30 Cell's, and the market dull. Ol
coinse srnnebi dy is Inn Iby the change. Corn
I : quantities to mil pmcliaseis, is slow to-day
at $1 25 per 1 nshel. No withstanding these
low p .lies ol coin n ,'tid c ni), this is the dear-
; csi p! ice to live it. 1 I: v.' .m en lately. Yon
( have here hi;s accommodations uud pay more
| for them than anywhere else. There is not
enough competition in some things hero to
make it lively.
Small Pox literally covers the face of the
earth abaut Montgomery and surrounding
country. Still the citizens, like the Atlanta
people, seem to care little or nothing for it.—
Negroes are the principal sufferers.
The three newspapers here are prosperous-
I have met lhe Editors of all three, and find
them genial, whole-souled fellows. Tha Mail
and Advertiser contemplate issuing weekly
editions of their papers next week.
I find here more of the “unbleached” than is
necessary, and consequently more of the mili
tary. The negroes work just when hunger
compels them, and the citizens are constantly
annoyed by depredations upon their private
property, and to open insult by these people.
News of a local nature of any importance is
distressingly scarce. Though C larlotte Thomps
son, with a splendid corps of artistes, are per
forming nightly to crowded audiences at the
Theatre; and to-day another Circus Company
is piroueting around town preparatory|lo a four
day’s heat. The latter is pronounced decided
ly a “one-horse” affair. They will doubtless

Washington, March 21—The Senale bill
provides for the punishment of certain crimes
committed against the United States. The
crime of foigery, as securities, is made puna
ishable by ten years imprisonment.
The House has passed the diplomatic and
consular appropriation bill, also a bill to fa
cilitate the commercial, postal and military
communication between tha several States.
New Yokk, March 21.—Cotton declining,

Naval stores dull.

Washington, March 20.—House —Mr. Da
vis, of Massachusetts, asked leave to intro
duce a joint resolution in relation to public
lands pertainingto the Armory at Springfield.
Leave was granted, and the resolution was
read three times and passed.
Mr. Smith introduced a joint resolution,
giving the thanks of Congress to Major Gen.
Gordon Granger and James A. Garfield, and
to the men under their commands, for their
gallantry.
New York, March 20.—The Tribune’s spe
cial says; Tiie conspirators, Spangler, Mudd
an l O’L iuglilin, at last accounts from the
Dry Tortugus, were taking their imprison
ment very philosophically, and conducted
themselves so as to get released from the
heavy load they have been wearing.
Further advices from Havana by the steam
er Manhattan state that the numerous and
recent fires throughout the island are at
tributed by one of the Havana journals to
negro incendiaries.
The discovery of a plot on the part of the
slaveholders to destroy one of the Havana
newspaper offices is reported.
The further progress of the Royal Com
mission in their work of investigation in the
Jamaica revolt is reported in the Herald’s
Kingston’s correspondence. Abundant evi
dence, inis said, has already been produced
to show that the affair was not a sudden and
unpremeditated outbreak, but a deliberately
organized rebellion, with the ultimate design
of murdering or driving fiom the Island all
the whites. The members of the commission
are expected to leave for England on tho
26th.
The entire British West India squadron
are ordered to Halifax.
A strong feeling in favor of the annexa
tion of Jamaica to'lhc United States is man
ifesting itself among the people of that Is
land.
In Hayti sixty persons, charged with being
connected in the revolutionary movements in
that republic, have been arrested, and it is
supposed that twenty of them would be exe
cuted.
ITiovidrnck, R. L, March 20.—The Union
ists are firing a salute of one hundred guns in
honor ot the nomination of Gen. Burnside,
Washington, March 20.—The Senate Com
mittee on Territories yesterday heard a dele
gation of Indians from the Indian Territory
in favor of admitting that territory into the
Union as a Slate.
The House Territorial Committee bad under
consideration the question of admitting Utah
on application of the Mormons. Among the
leaders ot the Mormons now in Washington
is a son of I r gharn Young, who is urging th ■
measure.
It is ssid that the question of the admission
of Colorado will be reconsidered in the Sen
ate.
Boston, Match 20—Dr. Chas. Burk, for
merly a professor iu Harvard College, died at
his residence in Cambridge, yesterday, of ap
poplexy. Ha was 70 years of age.
New York, March 20.—The Post’s Wash
ington special states that the Ways and Means
Committee last night agreed to take up tho
Loan bill to-morrow. It is probable that it
will be so amended as to restrict the powers
of the Secretary of the Treasury, and in that
form will be passed by the House.
Washington, March 20—The United States
Consul nt Abasco, Mexico, reported to the
Department of State, January 3d, the posi
tion of the belligerents in that section as un
changed. He also informs the Department
that, in late explorations, he has discovered
the ruins of two ancient cities, which have
remained unnoticed and unknown since the
days of conquest.
New York, March 20.—Advices per steam
er Vera Cruz show that the promised Impe
rial pacification of the countiy is as far as
ever from realization, and that the Republi
cans still maintain Hit contests in nearly all
sections with stubbornness and energy. Not
the slightest indications of the intention of
the French to withdraw has yet appeared.—
Several additional fights are recorded. The
victory of Gen. Mendez over the Republicans
in Micbnucan is claimed to have been far
more important than at first reported, and he
afterwards had a brilliant reception at Maselia
in honor thereof. Mendez says himself that
he fought the bands of several of the com
bined chiefs, and he had a hard battle, and
that his own losses were severe. Confirma
tion,is furnished regardingAhe critical position
of the Imperialists. At Tampico the Repub
licans are threatening the town, being in
force witliin thirty miles of it.
In the Pacific States the Imperialists were
still cii li'ie l to u few posts, the Republicans
holding all the country. The latter had badly
attacked the garrison of M izatlan on three oc
casions within five weeks.
Lieui. M oiry, Maximilian’s Minister of C 010.%

New York, March 20.—The Herald’s Ro
Janiero correspondent gives further particu
lars regarding the River Platte war. Im
mense preparations were making for battle,
which was imminent at tbe date of the latest
advices. The allied armies of the Paraguay
ans and Uruguayans, numbering about 50,-
000 men, and supported by a considreable
efficient naval fleet, are on the bank of the
Paraguay river, in the vicinty of Paso de la
Patrie, controlled on tbe norih side by tbe
Paraguayans, estimated at only 20,000 men.
Defensive works of great strength, however,
posseseed by the latter, neutralize, to some
extent, tbe numerical advantage over their
enemies. The allies design to soon attempt
tbe passage of the river, and a desperate
struggle was expected. They bad also in
contemplation a flunk movement and an at
tack on the Paraguayans’ rear. Parties of
Paraguayans bad crossed in boats over the
river, and skirmishing hud occurred. The
allies, however, repulsed the Paraguayans
with sma'l loss.
