Brought Home —The remains of Col.
James H. Neal, 19th Ga., Reg't., reached this
city from N. C., and were re-interred in the
city Cemetery at 5 o'clock on Wednesday
evening. He was killed near Kinston, N. C.,
on the Bth of March, 1865. His regiment, the
19th Ga., was one of the veteran regiments of
the Army of Virginia, and had gained for it
self a reputation during the war second to
none. The deceased was a graduate of
Franklin College, Ga., and of the University
of Virginia. At the commencement of the
■war he was engaged in the practice of law in
this city, and entered tho service as Captain of
the Jackson Guards. As a gentleman and an
officer he was beloved and respected by all
who knew him.
The remains of Lt. A. J. Neal, Marion (Fla.)
Light Artillery, were re-interred at the same
time. Ho was a brother of Col. Neal, and
was killed in battlo near Atlanta, Aug. ,10th,
1864; aged twenty-seven years. He entered
Franklin College, Ga., in 1852, and remained
there two years. He afterwards graduated at
the Lebanon, Tennessee. Law School, with
credit to himself and his native State, Ga.—
At the commencement of the war be was en
gaged in the practice of law in Micanopy,
Fla. Volunteered as private in the Ist Fla.
regiment, with which he remained until it
was mustered out of service, then joined an
Artillery Company from his adopted homo,
Fla., of which company he was Ist Lieuten
ant at the time of his death. They were
both sons of John Neal, Esq., formerly of this
city.
There was no public notice given of the
arrival of their remains in the city. But the
Colonel, six Captains and thirty men of the
old 19th Regiment, and many other friends of |
the two heroes and their family turned out to
do tribute to the gallant dead. May they
rest in peace.
Remains of Major Thomas H. Clay.—The
remains of Thomas H. Clay, who died in this
city in 1864, were, on yesterday, taken from
the cemetery and forwarded to Kentucky.
Maj. Clay was a distinguished officer in the
Confederate army, a son of Col. Henry Clay,
Jr., of Mexican fame, and a grandson of the
illustrious Henry Clay, of Kentucky. We
understand that the remains of the deceased
ar« to be re-intarred beside those of his la
mented father, in the State Cemetery at
Frankfort, Kentucky.
A number of friends of deceased paid tho
last sad tribute of respect to his memory, in
escorting his remains from the cemetery to
the depot. Among the number were nearly
all of the Kentuckians now residing in this
c»»J.
As we looked, for the last time, on the de
caying mortality of one whose ancestral name
is indelibly written in the history of our
country, we imagined we could see the broken
spirit of that mighty genius in the mirror of
whose comprehensive thought, the dangers of
the conflict in which the grandson fell, were
so vividly portrayed, weeping over the lost
Hberties of his fallen countty, and the over
throw of that constitution whose banner he
had so often borne aloft amid the tempest
strifes of party discord and sectional hate.
Thb Panorama.—The panorama of Para
dise Lost, now on exhibition at Orme’s Hall,
is by far the most superior exhibition that
has ever visited our city. The people have 1
been gulled so often by panoramic entertain- |
meats, that they are not eager to attend f
them. Those of them, however, who do not *
visit this one will miss a rate treat. The rep
resentations are very elegant—all gotten up
in a good style of art, and calculated to pleas e J
the audience. We advise the people to see
it once at least.
Cosvestios.—A Convention of lumbermen
is called to meet in this city on Tuesday the
15th of May. The object in calling this meet
ing is, to have some important action taken
in regard to the lumber trade which, it is
hoped, will be advantageous to owners of
saw-mills and to dealers in lumber. Manu
facturers of lumber especially, are invited to
be present at the convention, as their inter
est will be closely involved in the action of
the meeting. See call in another column.
The First.— A waiter from “Toccoa Ar
bor” invaded our premises yesterday about
dessert time, with a luncheon of Strawberries
and Cake. We were startled at the invasion,
and indignant that such a thing should be seen
in our office, so we put them out of sight
as rapidly as could be expected of a
fellow whose appetite is not in first rate tune.
Messrs Sitton <fc Parks are now affording this
luxury daiiy, besides Ice Cream, Cake, and
every other little delicacy appropriate to the
season. They have a pleasant harbor and at
tentive waiters, and have things nice for ladies.
B. B. Crew & Co., have removed from Ma
rietta street to the house lately occupied by
Salmons & Simmons. They have now a much
better room, and are enlarging their trade to
•nit the demands upon them. They keep up
their usual variety of late papers and period
icals.
Correction.—ln mentioning, on yesterday’
the losses arising from the late fire, the types
made us say that Garrett <fc Bro. were insured
for $2,000. That was incorrect. The insurance
amounted to $12,000.
Hydrophobia.—A number of cases of this
fatal disease, of recent date, are reported in
different parts of the country. Several cases
have occurred amongst the stock near Har
risonburg, Va., all of which terminated in the
death of the animals affected. A man in
New York State was bitten by a mad cat a
few days ago, and is now expected to die
from hydrophobia. The Lynchburg (Vu.)
papers state that a number of mad dogs have
made their appearance in Alexandria county
within the past few days. One or two per
sons have been bitten by them.
A Stranob Story.—The Nashville (Tenn.)
Banner tells a story of a man who lost his
whole family, consisting of six persons, du
ring the late war, all having been sent north
ward by our military authorities and never
traced further than Nashville. The gentle
man is certain that they are somewhere with
in a circuit of ten miles of that city; accord
ing to the editor everybody else believes so,
yet a search prolonged over two years has
failed to discover them.
Thb Cct Worm..—We learned yesterday
from an old resident of Rutherford county,
that the cut worm is committing great rava.
ges on the cotton crop in bis section. The
plant is destroyed immediately on its appear
ance above ground. A gentleman from Co
lumbia gives a similar report from Maury
county. We have already adverted to the
ravages of this insect in Giles.— Ntuhville
(iazette.
A “so-called” Democratic State Conven
tion assembled at Louisville on yesterday to
nominate some unimportant State officers,
and, wc fsar, to keep np party dissuasions.
The petition which Mr. Sumner presented
to the Senate last Thursday, asking for the
expulsion of Garret Davis, of Ky.,was signed
by a lot of negroes.
The Galveston, Tex ts, papers say that the
cotton crop is promising. More has been plant
ed than ever before in one year: much ol it silk
cotton, approximating to Sea Island. Tbo
wheat ordp will probably be the largest ever
reaped. Real e«tate has greatly advanced, ten
ements and lots are selling for more than three
time-what they cost three years ago. Travelers
in Northern Texas report that farmers are get
on very well, with abundance of meats and
breadstuff-. Trade is good, and the grain mar
ket is rapidly filling up by large importations
of corn from New Orleans. The freedmen are
said to be doing very well.
Should Congress sanction the Constitutional
Amendment proposed by the Reconstruction
Committee, a resolution will be preseated, re
, questing the Governors of States to convene
the Legislatures to act upon them.
A young German at Cleveland was taken
suddenlv ill recently, and, or was supposed,
died While watching by the coffin the night
atter his supposed death, his wife perceived a
motion of the body, and a second movement
was seen by others present. Restoratives were
immediately applied, and the young man was
saved from being buried alive.
By tho raising of the sunken ships in the
harbor of Sevastopol, Russia, thirty-six tuns
of copper, ninety tons of iron, twelve hundred
cannons, four thousand balls, twelve thou
sand cast iron ballast pigs, one hundred
chain cables, and a large quantity of miscel
laneous stores, were recovered.
A canvass of the different departments of
the Government is at present being made,
to ascertain the number of employees who
honorably served in the Union army, with a
view to the discharge of incompetent clerks,
and the appointment in their place of soldiers
and sailors.
A company has been organized in the city
of New York, with a capital of $2,500,000 in
shares of $25 each, with a view to lending
money for the working of cotton plantations,
secured by mortgages, and by pledges of one
half of the crop in addition.
Another bank robbery was committed in
N«w York last week to the amount ot §19,-
000, tor the return of which a reward of
SI,OOO is offered.
There are in the United States, 37,000
churches, being one for every 646 of the en
tire population. The total value of church
property is $87,000,000 There are 27,000
clergymen, and accommodations in the
church edifices for 14,000,000 of hearers.
Miss Anna Dickinson, it is announced, is
“soon, to retire from public life.”— Chicago
Journal.
Who is to be the unhappy man ?—Pren
tice.
A Washington letter, dated the 30th, says :
Another proclamation from the President, hav
ing reference to Texas, and relerring explicit
ly to martial law and the habeas corpus, may
soon be looked for.
What is it ?—A Washington letter dated
tne 29th says :
The President has been much in consulta
tion with Democratic members of Congress,
and his policy, long since marked out and
announced, will soon begin to be developed.
If the Senate are disposed to make war on
the President, by refusing to confirm bis ap
pointments, or even by bolder steps, the Pres
ident is quite ready to meet them on their
own ground. Something startling in this di
rection may sooh be looked for.

D R. JOHN BULL’S
COMPOUND
’ CEDRON BITTERS.
The Latest and fflost Important
DISCOVERY
OF THB
NINETEENTH CENTURY! I !
No man’o nnmo Is morn intlmotely connected with the
hlstorv of MATKKIA MEDICA of the Unite.! States, vr
more favorably known as a pioneer in Medical Discovo
ry, than that of
John Bull, of Louisville, Kentucky.
Ilia Inimitable preparation cf Sar.apa.rlll., has
long stood at the head of the various «>mix»uu<fa ol that
valuable drug.
His Compound of Wild Cherry has be
come a household word
throughout the
West
His Worm Losen
ges, in less than a year
after their introduction, attained a
Reputation ns wide spread an the continent of North
.America. But the crowuinggiory of his life remums to
be attained m bi< discovery, or rather combination, for
he does not claim to have been the discover of CED
KOtV, which is the basis of the Bitters now ofierert
the public. That honor belongs to the native inhabi
tants of Central America, to whom its virtues have been
known for more than two hundred years. Armed with
it thelud’au bids fiance to the most deadly maiaru
and handles, without fear, the m<>st venomous serpent"
It is a belief with them, that while there is breath in tne
body, tho Cedron is poten o cure, no matter what the
case may be.
While Dr. Bull is not prepared to endorse this sxtnva
gant pretension, be is nevertheless satisfied from a
thorough examination oi the evidence relating to its
virtues, that asa remedy and preventative for all d s
eases arising from exposure, either to change of weather
or climate, or to miasmatic influsneesp it stands
Witliovit a, rl-va.l!
And justly deserves the reputation it
has long enjoyed in Central America
and the West Indios.
IN DYSPEPSIA
And Hr attendant train of symptoms it acts more 1.1 Ice
a Cliarin than a modiciue. liioro is nothing in tho
whole range o’ Materia Medina that can for a moment
bear a comjiariso.i with it in this disease.
A full account of tins wonderful plant rnay be *ound In
tho litn edition of the United Siates Dispensatory, pages
1387 and 1888.
A series ot experiments in which Dr. Bull has been tor
yours engaged, has just been brought to arhccessiul
termination, and be is now enabled to offer the public a
combination of Cedron with other approved tonics,
the whole preset ved m the best quality of copper distill
ed B »urbon Wuisky, which he is confident has no equal
in toe w rid.
He might furnish a volume ot certificates, but the
public have long since learned to estimate such things
by their true value. The safest plan is, for everyone
to test lor himself the virtues of a new medicine.

IN

It is destined to mporcodo all other remedies, it not
