Anti-Cholera— The Automatic
Disinfecting Aapparatus.
We examined recently at the office of Doc
tor* D W McCarthy and J M. Scudder, an
invention of tbe latter named gentleman
which is likelg to come into general use in
cate of a cholera epidemic. It is called tbe
Automatic Disinfecting Apparatus, and may
be used in applying medicines in various
kinds of diseases. It is intended particularly
for use in preventing tbe spread of cholera,
and baring already received tbe approval of
the H altb Officers of Baltimore, Philadel
phia X«w York and Boston, i* to be manu
factured here.
Tne apparatus consist* of a little boiler,
in tbe foim of a chimney, to a common coal
oil lamp; a lior sontal tube leading from this
and at right angles to this a vertical tube
passing into a cup containing tbe disinfecting
fluid. As the steam passes from tbe horizon
tal tube and causes a vacuum tn tbe vertical
one, and the disinfecting fluid rising up be
comes mechanically mixed aud incorporated
with tbe steam, and is blown off in tbe foim
of a minutely divided spray, the disinfectant
is thus brought directly in contact with im
parities in tbe atmosphere, and its power Is
increase! tenfold er more. It can be carried
around a bouse like a common lamp.— Cin.
