Latitude, for so signal a manifestation of confidence,
with a sense of obligation to devote myself unre-

hVailst, however, I promptly accept the office, this very
L.. c of obligation, gives me pause, under the peculiar

Lur concluding request. Were the General Assembly, as

pension was made. So far as regards the General As-

£yopinion is that I cannot. Such a request on my part,
M a compliance with it on their’s, might he considered
pliant action. It could scarcely be reconciled with re-
k’ctful acquiesence in the declared purpose, of the con-

KMtituents may permit,) is the line upon which I am
poived to move ; and I am happy to see the General As

-’■)oipt compliance, already accorded to tw»> emphatic
•commendations of the Provisional Governor, will enable
f Authorities of the United States to discern, more fully,
M 'more accurately, the true spirit of our people.
To say that we must pursue the course indicated by

furthermore, I think, situated as we are, my inaugura

vcstiotiable propriety. Barren of results, because if in-
U'urated to-day I could do no official act. Of ques-
