Rev. C. W. Lane.—This excellent
^linister of the Gospel, and true Chris
tian gentleman, Pastur of the Presby
terian Church of our city, with his
estimable lady, has been called away
by some business to the North, and
will be absent for several weeks to
to come. They carry with them the
heart-felt blessings and best wishes of
our whole community; and we pray
for them a speedy and happy return.
Shooting Affray.—Some ten days
since a shooting affray took place near
the Double Branch on the road to
Scottsboro' iifthe suburbs of our city.
A man named James Ramsay of Scotts-
boro’ had been repoted to Policeman
Tuttle as having violated some ordi
nances of the city. Tuttle pursued
and on overtaking Ramsay some alter
cation ensued resulting in the shoot*
ing of Ramsay through the lungs.—
Ramsay will probably die. An inves
tigation before J ustice3 Vaughan and
The Sandersville Herald.—We
have received the first number of a
new paper started in Sandersville with
the above name by Medlock and Ar-
line. Mr. Medlock was formerly con
nected with the Central Georgian and
has had considerable experience in
newspaper business. We wish him
success in his new adventure.
Weekly Phcbnix of St. Mary’s
Ga.—We have received with much
pleasure the Weekly Phoenix, a hand
some little newspaper just founded at
St. Mary’s on the Georgia seacoast.—
We extend to it the right hand of fel
lowship, and wish it and the hand
some little city in which it is located
abundant prosperity.
We are glad to learn of the increas
ing prosperity and coutined growth of
The South, published in New York
city. We notice in the last issue that
it is now published by The South
Publishing Company, 34 Park Row,
the new firm succeeding that of Tar-
drew & Co. The South is doing
splendid service for our section and
we think our readers would be well
paid in accepting the liberal offer of
the publishers to send it for the re
mainder of this year for One Dollar.
Will Dot some of our public spirited
citizens show their appreciation of this
earnest advocate of our interests by
making up a handsome club under their
proposition ?
Van Nosthand’s Magazine.—We
are more than ever impressed with
1 air was had in our city last Friday | the merits of this sterling periodical
by an examination of the July num
ber before us. While mainly devoted
resulting in the discharge of Tuttle.
More Shooting - —We hear authen
tic, but not very explicit rumors of
another shooting affair in our city.—
It seems that several of our colored
citizens have been molested of late by
some brother African, who assailed
wanderers in ghostly hours demanding
money. This Quixotic adventurer—
certainly crazed to imagine that the as
sailed had money about their persons—
became noted as having for a compan
ion a dog. Some order-loving conser
vative freedmen were on the alert for
the apprehension of the daring high
wayman and his canine confrere, when
they met in a dark hour one of our
most respectable and worthy citizens
returning homeward from his business
with his faithful dog following at his
heels. The agitation of the volunteer
patrol—the excitement, we mean, or in-
ilignation, was such that a brisk fusil-
ade was opened on the supposed out
law before any explanations were at
tempted. The fire was gallantly re
turned. The engagement lasted for
sometime, resulting in the wounding
of one of the combatants slightly in
the arm before the tragedy of errors
was understood. The marauder seems
to have taken warning by the event,
being possibly in the neighborhood,
and to have escaped to “ parts un
known.”

Timely Showers-—Our county has
been recently blessed with excellent
showers, and the crop prospect seems
to be highly encouraging at the pres
ent. We chronicle the fact for the
purpose of enabling distant specula
tors and “cotton-ring” men to be on
the alert. These showers must be ta
ken duly into consideration in fixing
the prices of “the staple” next Fall.—
If the prices should steal a march on
them, and leave the planters enough
profit to escape from debt, these plan
ters might set up for themselves, raise
their own provisions, keep out of debt
in the future, and thus achieve what
our Revolutionary fathers did—Inde
pendence !

Rev. Dr. Bieman.—We had the
great pleasure of listening to an excel -
lent discourse on last Sabbath in the
Presbyterian Church of our city, from
the Rev. C. P. Bieman, D. D., of
Mount Zion, for more than half a cen
tury identified with the religious and
educational history of Georgia- His
venerable appearance, and the affec
tion elicited by a life time of well-do -
ing, united in fixing more closely the
attention of his congregation on the
precious truths he uttered. We re
gard ourselves as fortunate in having
,u ard him.
Methodist Church.—We perceived
If ft he re was no services last Sunday
to subjects connected with Civil En
gineering, its articles are so well selec
ted and very many of them are so hap-
pily popularized in their handling by
the able authors who constitute this
fine Magazine's contributors, that the
general reader will be almost as much
interested aud instructed as the Civil
Engineer. The very latest progress
in Civil Engineering and in many cog
nate branches of knowledge are care
fully noted. To a Civil Engineer the
work is indispensable.
Among the articles in the number
before us connected only incidentally
with Engineering, is one of the high
est interest entitled “West of (he Mis
sissippi in 1S72.” The geographical
features of that vast and interesting
country are happily sketched ; and
the history of its rapid occupancy by
a busy and civilized white population
is set lorth. The important agency
of the railway and the telegraph not
as the followers but as the pioneers of
population is explained. The article
opeus the eyes as with the power of
a wondrous vision unfolding the
mighty future of that region. The
other twenty-odd articles are scarcely
less interesting. Published by D.
Vau Nostrand, 23 Murray Street N.

will be delivered at tho Good Tem

Jews.” Every one should go.
Forney denounces Hartranft, the
Grant-Cameron candidate for Gover

demands his withdrawal from the tick

the State. On the contrary, Camerou
demands of the President the immedi

fice-holders who do not support Hart

dares not. It appears to be coming
to this, that the President must give

Starvation in the Jlitlst of Plenty.
A living man is continua ly exerting mechanical
force and giving off heat, and in proportion he is con
tinually underg 0l ng a loss of weight—that is to say a
loss of substance. This life-loog production of heat
and of mechanical force is not suspended even during
sleep does not interrupt respiration—a clearly mechan
ical function. As to the generation of heat it is un
necessary to insist. It is plain that this ceaseless man
ifesting of vital force with its accompanying and
strictly proportioned waste could rot continue forever-
The man would dwindle to nothing. But long before
the effects of this gradual diminution become apparent,
they aie felt in the form of the two inipeiious sensa
tions- hunger a: d thirs:. To Hill these cravings, to re
►tore the lost weight, and to put th» man iu a position
slili to keepon losing weight (as the price oYkeeping
on producing heat and mechanical force) it is necessa-
that he should be supplied with three things—air, water
and food. Now simply receiving food into the stom
ach is not truly receiving food into the system.—
Str ctly speakiung, food lying in the stomach is as tru
ly 1CUlinift and not within the body, at, ie food held iu
the hollow of the closed hand. Duly when it has been
thoroughly digested and assimilated can it be said that
it is really received into the system. But how soldoin
is the organism in a position thoroughly to assimilate
sufficient food ! What are the consequences ? The
outcome exceeds the income : and the bodily strength
tails because the system can no longer keep op the
mutually bataneiug waute aud renovation. Here it is
that a tonic stimulant (such as Dr. Fisch's Bitters)
proves no beneficial—it might almost be said, so in
dispensable. 49 eowlm.

The hot solar rays that ripen the harvest gener
ate many distressing diseases. If the liver be at
all predisposed to irregularities, this is the sea
son in which billious attacks may be anticipated.
A weak stomach, too, is weaker in the summer
months, and the loss of vitality through the pores
by excessive perspiration is so great, that a whole
some tonic, combinating also the properties of a
diffusive stimulant and gentle exhilarant, is in
many cases necessary, to health, and under no
circumstances should be dispensed with by the
sickly and debilitated. Of all the preparations
intended thus to refresh, sustain, and fortify the
human fiame, there is none that will compare
with Hostetler’s Celebrated Stomach Bitters.—
They have been weighed in the balance of expe
rience and not found wanting ; have been recom
mended from the first as a great medicinal specific
not as a beverage, and in spite of interested oppo
sition fretn innumerable quarters, stand, after a
twenty years trial, at the head of all proprietary
medicines intended for the prevention and cure of
all ordinary complaints of the stomach, the liver,
the bowels, and the nerves. In the unhealthy
dis tricts bordering tha great rivers of California
Hostetter's Stomach Bitters may be classed as the
, , , , , | standard one for every species of intermittent or
up either one or the Other Ot the tMO remittent fever. The people wbj inhabit those

Keystone State. Between lornej year by the results of its operation,
and Cameron, Grant has a hard time. As bitters, so called, of the most pernicious
character, *' e springing up like fungi on every
ide, the public is hereby forewarned against the
dram-shop frauds. Ask for Hostetter’s Bitters,

that the genuine article is never sold in bulk, but

Founded on a Rock.—The disappointed ad-
venturers who have from time to time attempted
to run their worthlesa potiona agains Dhake'i
Plantation Bitteks, vow that they cannot un
derstand what foundation there is for its amazing
popularity. The explanation is simple enough.—
The reputation of the world renowned tonic is
founded upon a rock, the Rock of Experience.
All its iugredieuta are pure aud wholesome.—
How, then, could tricksters and cheats expect to
rival it with compounds of rhmi. •* r '

acetuous fermentation T Of couiae the charlatans
have come to grief. Their little game has failed.
Their contempt for the sagacity of the communi

In every State and Territory of the Union it is. to

A preparation so widely and favorably known
as Hall’s Vegetable Sicilian Hair Renewer, needs
few words of praise from us. This compound has
won its way" to the highest favor in the public
mind; and multitudes, who have vainly used oth

on trying the Sicilian Kenewer. been made glad
by the speedy restoration of their gray hair to its
natural color, and the thin locks, thickened up.
