THE LEADER ENTERPRISE, FRIDAY MAY 171912
Provide Wholesome Entertainment
MAKE FARMLIFE ATTRACTIVE.
To the Officers and Members of the Farmers’ Union: i
“The secret of the constant tide from the country to the city is%
that the vouny man and woman—often the man and ‘woman of mature
yenrs—is on a search for that amusement or diversion which is too
often lacking on the farm, ‘
The one wav to counteract the tendency—permancatlv—is to find
on tne farm some substitute for the recreations that lure the man
from the country to the city. Until this is done, all the preachments
in the world about the “*beauty” of country life” and the “*duty of
the farmer to__feéd the world,” will not touch the problem,
In the city, the average country boy or girl gets perhaps a doliar
or two a week more in actual money than he or she could earn on the
farm. And this difterence is speedily eaten up in board bills, in
frivolous amusements and too frequently, in dissipations that untit the
pirticipant either for toil or future usefulness, You hear a great
deal abont the boy or girl who goes from Ihe country to the city and
makes a hugue success. You hear little or nothing about the incompar
ably larger novmber whe go to the city and either go through life
semi-failures or absolute wrecks on the shores of competition for
which they have not been ftitted, "
Recently, I have been much interested in the study of the reports
of vice comm.ssions, issued by the vaiious cities. In many cases they
show that the podr wages paid girls in departinent and other stores
and many of these girls come direct from the country or from small
towns. are recruited by the wages of a life of shame. There is this
feature to be considered by the fatber or mother who knows that the
son or the daughter is hstening to the lure of the city,
Amusements of a wholesome nature can and should be provided
in the country. Tdo not say that on every farm. or in every rural
community, it is possibly to even approximately duplicate the myrial
lichts, or the theaters or the other resorts that go to make up the hfe
of a wetropolis. But the monotony of farm life can be relieved, and
the farm routine itself ziven a new meaning, by a little ingenuity
and perseverance. 'I regard the introduction of such amusements as
among the factors indispensable to the solution of the so-called “rural
problem.” about which so mauy people vigorously preach. Let them
turn the.r efforts slightly in this direction. The returns will be per
ceptible,
' Charles S. Barret.
