Sunday Freight Bill I
Nears Final Passage
Atlanta—The bill to amend thel
law prohibiting the moving of freight
trains on Sunday was moved up on
the house calendar Friday for a third
reading and final passage. The
amendment is aimed to give relief
to fruit growers of Georgia by allow
ing them to ice refrigerator cars on
the sabbath and facilitate the move- '
ment of the peach crop. |
The Georgia fruit exchange is
working for the passage of the bill,i
and with the assistance of members
of the house has succeeded in get
ting a favorable report from the
comimittee.
According to figures furnished the
house Friday morning, Georgia ship
ped 950 cars of peaches during the
last four days. The value of the
entire shipment was $475,000, or
approximately sllB,o]o a day.
- -khe peach and fruit growers of
the state have been fighting the
the law which prohibits the moving
of freight cars on Sunday, declaring
that it has been costing them thous
ands of dollars.
Farm Products
May Pay No Tax
Atlanta—The farmers of Georgia
are showing their appreciation of
the efforts of Representative John
son, of Bartow, before the commit
tee on agriculture to a favorable re
port on the bill proposing to exempt
farm products from taxation for the
lnext twelve months after produc
ltion. The report of the committee
went before the house Thursday and
the bill was moved up on the cal
endar for a thitd reading.
It was a hard fight in opposition
to the efforts of the ways and means
commiitee to get as much revenue
as possible on the taxable property
of the state.
“I am sure the bill will pass the
house when it comes up for pas
sage,’ said Mr. Johnson. “It is a
just amendment to a rather harsh
law, and it has the support of farm
ers and consumers through the state.”

Elks Banish “Goat” :
From Initiations
Portland, Oregon, July 11.—Here
after all “goat riding” will be elmin
ated from Ellk initiation. Such was
the action taken by the grand lodge
in session here. The ritual commit

two hours debate the vote to abolish
“rough house work” carried.
A fight is expected on the location
of the new national Elks home, which i
the home commission proposed build-|
ing in Bedford City, Va. The oppo
sition prefers a site near the center
of Elkdom’s population. Upon this
point the grand lodge is divided.
Robert Brown, managing editor of
The Louisville Times, has been ap
