Boost the Ben Hill County Fair
The hungry Ruffles who is foraging &ll over town must be »
genius. Thus far, he has evaded detection of the regular police force
as well as three special offizers detailed to cateh him, Twenty-five
braves were deputized last night to assist in the hunt, but no captarehas
been reported. One very nervous family on south Mainstreet, seeipg
two suspicions characters (two of the deputies) in their alley, tele
phoned for the Police. No very serious damage has as yet been done,
the losses being entirely confined to eatables.

Ben Hill County Fair will be the best and biggest in Wiregrass
Georgia.

Most people will be surprised to learn that in this business
strenuous but peace loving, Yankee-land one of the leading employ~
ments is the manufacture of firearms and ammunition. In both bulk
of output and variety of products this interesting business reaches
well toward the front among the largest American commercial factors,
Inquiry among local dealers leveals the fact that the Remington-UMC
factories, for instance, considered the largest of the kind in the United
States, provide the trade with no less than eight models of shotguns
and rifles, approximately 550 distinet kinds of metallic cartridges and
7,000 different standard shotgun loads, The value of this one com
p2ny’s gross output is said to run well into the millions and is dis
tributed in every civilized nation on the globe.
In the paths of peace and not in war, by the way, lie the best
warkets for the creations of the gunsmith and the ammunition maker.
The trap shooter, the rifle, pistol and revolver marksman, tze farmer
or ranchman who shoulders his gun for a week-end potpie or to pro
tect his crops and his flocks from animal pests; the city and village
sportsman, who makes his now-and-then pilgrimage to the game haunts
—these are the men who keep the wheels of the big factories moving
aoc apon whon: the industry largely depends for year-in and year-out
support. Kx.
Get ready to take some of those Premiums at the Ben Hill Fair.
The Opportunity of The Baptists.
The m embers of the Baptist church haveitin their power toin
augurate a movement to help the young men and wome®n and child
ren. Especially the young men, who now for the lack of a place to
gather for clean, healthy entertainment, amidst wholesome sur
roundings, congregate on street corners, clubs of doubtful morals,
poolrooms and saloons. We are all of one opinion, no matter of what
phase of religion, that ‘‘As the twig is bent the tree will grow.”” In
the boy is the sprout of the man. If we give him a chance he'll
grow straight, otherwise he’ll be dwarfed and morally crippled; and
that end in view no better use coud be made of the present church
building and its location than to convert it into a Young Peoples’
Christian Association Ryom. A library and Gymnasium open at all
times for use of those who could be attracted, would save lots of
the boys who are now drawn into the whirlpool of vice, immorality
and dissipation in search of entertainment. The small price that you
could get for your building The Leader-Enterprise will undertake
to raise for you, providing you will let it remain on its present loca
tion until such time when some public spirited citizen will provide
a lot to put it on. Better still, let’s raise the money to fit it up for
the purpose in view and give the boys a chance. :
Look for T. E. W., on Georgia Politics,
in the P. D.
1f you are interested in what I have to say about Georgia politics
and politicians, subscribe to the Progressive Democrat.
I mean to have lots and cords of things to say about Georgia
politics, and about rotten Georgia politicians.
But, henceforth, my say will not be said in The Jeffersonian.
That will be made strictly Natiopal.
The price of the P. D. is 50 cents a year,
From now on, we will cut out the purely local, personal and
social news,
Whether Sally Ann went to church, last Sunday, with her beau,
John Henry, in his new red-wheeled buggy, we wiil not hereafter in
quire.
Whether Judge Limberlegs visited Warrenton last week, we will
never, never again ask. 5
From this time on the P, D. will be a State paper, all wool and a
yard wide, and it will gun for rotten politicians from away back,
Jeffersonian. :
Everybody lend a hand to make Fair week the biggest ever. f
THE LEADER-ENTERPRISE FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 20, 1012
Running a paver is just like ary other business and entitled to
the same consideration. Its editor has the same rights as has the
butcher or baker or any othe: business man, whom the general put
fic does not expect to make a tarket out of himself for the enmilies
of some peopie whom we may not like or whose business or their
methods we may eondem, Primarily our purpose is to give the news,
the things that happen and may cheer, the social doicgs of our home
folks and the progress of our town. Poiice court doings. brawls,
family quarrels or the continucus prating of vices prevailing in
our midst will not add to the reputation of our towz nor will profit
anyone, It simply stirs up strife and brings together the various
elemcrts of discord, who then fight as one for their existence. The
remedy is not in publicity but in carefully planned campaignes, mar
snalled and manned by® MEN who dare Their influence must be
grcunded upon sincerity and their own skirts must.be clean to effect
any permanent good. That conditions need improving and badly so,
is admitted and we are looking for the Cat who'l bell the Rat.
Government Money for Crop Moving
When the Secretary of the Treasury suggested that the surplu
money in the federal treasury be loaned to the banks to be used in
moving the crops he had in mind, if the dispatches convey correct in
formation, ouly the crops of the West, becanse much of the surplus
is deposited in the banks of that section, but, of course, he couldn’t
discriminate in favor of the West. The South 1s just as much in need
of money for crop moving purposes as is the West, and if the policy
of loaning government money to assist in moving the crops should be
adopted the Scuth would demand and get her share.
As a matter of fact the South is entitled to particular considera
tion in the matter of a loan by thegovernment because it is the South’s
crop, cotton, that brings the most money into the country. It is the
crop that offsets our imports,
One of the reasons why the government is in funds at this time
time is that the postal savings bauoks have proven successful sooner
than was expected. About $25,000,000 has been deposited in them,
and it was stated on the floor of the convention of the American
Bankers’ Association the other day that no part of it was taken from
the savings deposits of the banks, All of it practically is money
that was hidden awav or that o'herwise would have been spent ip
ways that would have brought but little benefit to those to whom it
belongs,
And the deposits of the postal savings banks are going to increase
right along and the government will have a good deal of surplus
money, There is no good reason why it should’t loan it where it can
be used at a fair rate of interest for moving the crops, .The South
could use a pretty large part of the surplus at this time to great ad
vantage, —Savannah News,
How would the News put this ,tiheme in operation. Through the
Sub-Treasury plan of the Farmersé- Alliance or via the route of the
““direct to the people” money plan’]of the Peoples Party? We know
of no existing law by which this ‘‘crop moving” money would reach
the people most in need of it, The theory 1s a good one but to put it
into operatien so that the farmers will get the benefit will meet with
the usual opposition. A total revision of our system of finance is
badly needed. Scarcity of money in a land of plenty is a paradox,
the solution is simple if you accept the fiat of authority as the stamp
of value to the medium of exchange. '
