Hoke Smith Will
Not Leave Senate
Atlanta, Dec. 16 —Though Sena
tor Hoke Smith has been st‘rong
ly urged to consent to a cabinet
place—one of the most important
in the cabinet, he is not going to
leave the Senate, This announce
ment comes from a source so close
to the Georgia senator that it may
be considered in the light of an
ex cathedra declaration.
It is further stated that Senator
Smith will probably be on the
Finance committee, This is one
of the most important commitiees
in the senate and holds the same
relation to the tariff as the Ways
and Means committee of the House
of which Mr. Underwood is chair
man. Senator Smith will also re
tain his place on the postoffice
committee and on the committee
on agriculture, On these two com
mittees last session he was instru
‘mental in getting the passage of
the parcels post law and the divi
sion of markets law, both design
ed especially to benefit farm and
rural communities, but he has still
other things which he is anxious
.to bring about in these two com
mittees, which he regards as
among the most important on the
whole committee.

Philathea Report.
The Philathea Bible Class of
the First Baptist Church comple
ted its organization Sunday morn
ing, Dec. 8. The following mem
bers were elected officers:
President—Miss Verna Me~ -
Lauchlin. :
Vice-President—Mrs. D. B.
Ware. :
Treasurer—Miss Mabel Rogers.
Secretary—Miss Jeffie Persons.
Reporter— Miss Jennie Tyler.
It was decided that the officers
should serve one year. The
several committees have been
appointed and are showing a
spirit of determination and read
iness to serve.
A number of new members '’
were welcomed last Sunday, and
our total enrollment is now 34,
average attendance being be
tween 25 and 3. There has been
a marked increase both in attend
and enrollment since services be
gan in the new church. During
the early fall our class numbered
only 27,
The Baraca Bible Class has
shown us a number of favors, all
of which are sincerely apprecia- .
ted. We heartily thank them
for. the staining of our floor. .
This is a great improvement to
our new ,rooms.
Between the Philathea and
Baraca classes there is a good.
healthy feeling spirit of rivalry.
Both classes are already indis
pensable factors in the church
life and every week efforts are
being made to increase the sphere
of usefulness and service. '
The leader of the Philathea
class, Mrs. J. B. Wall, is doing
effective and conscientious work.
Under her careful . and guidance
and directions the class promises
to continue to make strides of
progress and edeavor to reach
the more perfect goal, the mark
of the high calling. il
