13 “Enemies” of
Children Named
San Francisco, Cal., Dec., 25
There are thirteen ‘‘Child Ene
miies’’ in California, according to
Dr. L.M. Powers, thecity health
commissioner, who told who they
are and where they live, as fol
lows:
First—Doctors who don’t re
port their cases of contagious
diseases.
Second— Dirty milkmen.
Third—Flies
Fourth—Tubercular cows. -
Fifth—Persons who conceal
contagous diseases.
Sixth—Hokey-pokey men.
Seventh—Reckless automobile
speeders.
Eighth—Violators of quarantine.
Ninth—Manufacturers of adul
terated candies,
Tenth—Manufacturers of adul
terated foods.
Eleventh—Child slavers.
Twelfth Parsimonious tax
payers who place the hoarding of
money above measures for the
protection of childlife.
Thirteenth Mothers who
needlessly deprive their babies
of mother’smilk. =
The list is worthy of study,
particularly since many of the
‘enemies’ named are enemies of
not only the child but, are equal
ly of the adult, and they are en
emies against which all society
should do battle, said Dr. Pow
ers.

Hen Operates Cold Storage
~ Plant All Her Own
Tarrytown, New York, Dec. 26.
—Gilbert Brown, of Eastview,
owns a Plymouth Rock hen who
has been operating a cold storage
plant of her own.
This morning Brown was at
tracted by the hen’s cackling and
followed her to his ice house, and
there, hidden under the floor,
were 72 eggs. Brown believes
that last summer the hen wan
dered into the ice house and, find
ing a cool spot, laid an egg and
after starting the nest went there
every day.
As eggs are much higher now,
Brown says his hen is not alone
a good cold storage proposition,
but a financier, and he expects
his neighbors will now train their
hens to lay cold storage eggs.
The many friends of Judge J.
C. Buckley will be glad to learn
that he is continueing to improve.
