RENOVATION OF WORN-OUT LAND.
The following letter, from Mr. George Catron, da
ted at Litiret Fa ft or j, Maryland, March 4W>, 1847,
is adireesod to John S. Skinner, Etq the able and
indefatigable editor of the Farmer' Lit*try. What
is said in it of the wom-out fields of Maryland, is now,
or soon wiil be, equally true oflarge portions of Geor
gia. Sonic of the older counties have already lost ma
ny of their most wealthy and valuable citizens, who
have tied from the very desolation which haa heen
wrought out by their own ha ids, and which is the le
g timitc consequence of tlieir present miserable system
of cultivation All who feel an interest in the perma
nent prosperity of the State, will of course draw instruc
tion from the. experience of such men as Mr. Catron.
It is their business to vary his system according to the
differences of climate, soil, and productions. For in
stance in the Southern States, Lucerne is found to be
an admirable substitute for Clovrr, while various grass
es may be mad ■ to supply the places of Timothy, and
oilier similar jnoduets of the North It is indeed grati
fying to find that our people are beginning to Ice! an
increased interest in agricultural improvement and we
arc pleased to award tic credit of tins change in public
sentiment to such publications ns I The Farmer's Libr, -
ry” and “Southern Cultivator,”—works which ought to
be read by every piauter and farmer in the Slat-.
7\> the Editor of the Far ni ,-r , I .ibr ary
Dear Sir: I have frequent letters from dif
fer! parts of the State of’ Virginia, asking my
exp ‘ricnee us to the effects of different ma
nures, particularly guano, a id of my sue . s;
iu renovating these worn-out lands, the mcrlns
operand!. &e. Now, my farming operatio n
being quite a (secondary consideration in my
general business, I cannot spare the tins • from
my other occupations to answer in detail these
various communications, and therefore have j
concluded to reply to them generally through
your very valuable paper, and hope it may
reach til rough this channel every one of my
correspondents. For to this paper, and other
agricultural publications, together with a na
tural fondness for the pursuit, 1 am indebted
for whatever success l have met with.
You know my whereabouts in this desert
of old fields, gullies, and poverty grass, a.rl
are well acquainted (as who is not, who has
ever travelled from the city of Baltimore to t he
seat of Government ?) with the total bar
renness of the land generally. 1 therefore
need say but little on the general character of
the land to start with, an I will begin by giv
ing the reasons for my first attempting, what
appeared at that time a Herculean ta.- ; the
renovation of the barren old fields.
Having been reared atnul the green fields
and lowing herds in one of the most lertile re- j
cions in the State of New \ ork, I could not
look upon the barren face of this country with
out its producing a feeling ol m danci oly. 1
came to the conclusion that it woul 1 never do
for me to plant myself down here with the ex
pectation of making it a permanent residence
with such a prospect always before in\ I
therefore resolved either to change the irmier
al aspect of the country in this respect, or
leave it. The form- r appearing the m st feas
ible. I made the effort and 1 have the satis
faction to nay that, as far as the vision extends
from my residence, I have succeeded.
This country, with all its faults, lias redeem- j
ing qu ilities. Favored with Heaven’s great-j
est blessings, universal health and a nevr j
failing supply ol the purest spring water with I
a soil possessing naturally the elements of fer-1
tility, a beautiful rolling surface covered with
clumps of trees, which, for richness and varie
ty of foliage, and beauty of proportions, for
landscape or lawn purponcH, cannot be sur
passed in the world, it is not indebted to Hea
ven for its forbidding appearance, hut to that
reckless system of cultivation too generally
to bo found in most of the Southern States.
There are two ways, Mr. Editor, of reno
vating these old fields; one I sec recommend
ed frequently in your very valuable work;
that is. to sou broadcast over tile land some ;
five bushels of ashes with a bushel of plaster
per acre, to he followed by ploughing in of
green crops, &e. Now this may suit some
uui'.udes but it will not do here, where a good
northwest wind after a frost in November will
sweep into the fence corners every particle of I
vegetation from the face of these old fields.
The labor ulonc which would be required fv.
the ploughing and rcploughing. &c. on this
method, would, it’ hired out by the day to
work upon some public work, purchase ashes
enough to do in one year what would require
five years to accomplish in this slow method.
Another plan is to go at it Taylor fashion,
and do tile tiling up right. As ancxaiuplc.pl’
this latter plan. 1 will give you the result of
an experiment made last year upon one of
these “old fields. 1 ’ and I take this merely be
cause it is fresh before me, having just finish
ed threshing out the corn grown upon this field,
and not because it shows any more favorable
results than twenty other experiments of which
I have memoranda.
I purchased last year an addition to nty j
farm of 365 acres of iand ; on this tract there i
was one lot which lay in upon the lands 1 had
already improved in such manner as to injure ‘
the appearance of the whole. In the spring
of 1846 I resolved to make an attack upon this j
old field; and to satisfy myself still further of
the cost of such improvement, 1 had it sur
veyed and platted by a regular surveyor, and
found the contents to be 27 acres, out of which
there was taken, for a house; lot, and road,
one acre, leaving 26 acres to be cultivated.
This field was tenanted out in the year 184'>
to a very worthy man, who cultivated it in
corn, and 1 have his word that the product (and
lam sure no person who saw the crop grow
ing will ever think of questioning-the amount)
was twenty bushels of nubbins, or less than
five bushel’s of corn per acre. This, by the
way, is about the character of my crop* grown .
in this neighborhood.
In March 1846, ns soon as the grounds
would do to haul over, I brought out the i iglit
arm of my resources, my flying artiil* ry.
in the way of mule teams, loaded to the muz
zle from ’ray manure heap, and made a regu
lar discharge upon ray greatest enemy, flu
washed and gullied side hills. These 1 pep
pered thick and strong. I then put in the
{dcjugli*. and flushed the whole field up deeply,
following in tire still'clay parts with the sub
cuil plough. 1 then brought out iny other for
ce*. in the shape of leached ashes, (wffieli
cost, delivered on the ground, 810 per hun
dred bushels.) and s-preal over the whole,
manured pari* and all, at the rate ol 100 bush
els per acre, pulverizing the ground and mix
ing well with the harrow. Sowed 2)
onu per acre, harrowed it again—sowed one
peck ol’ cleuu fresh clover-seed per acre, and
followed with roller. This was all done in the
right way and just at the right time. Atler
the oats were well up. I put the finishing stroke
to the whole battle by bringing up my corpt
dc reserve, in the shape of guano. The first
moist day. all spot* tht appeared to have been
mil — 1 in the spreading of ashes, or appeared
weak 1 dressed over with about 200 pounds
guano, mixed with one bushel plaster per acre
You will say perhaps this is going 0 rather
strong, and requires more capital, than can
feneratly be commanded by the most ot our
irraerw There are very few, however, who
have not some half dozen or more worthless
colts eating tlieir heads oft every year, to say
. nothing about the hoga and horued cattle
which might be disposed of in some way to
raise 81*10. which would improve permanent
|y ten acres of land with leached ashes, or they
might borrow 8100 for twelve months with al
most a certainty of returning it from the in
creased product on the first crop, a* you shall !
see by tne following result of the above cx- j
pertinent.
I have just finished threshing out and clean
ing up 1,217 bushels of first-rate oats, grown
upon this field of 26 J acres—an average of 451 j
bushels per acre, and no Chester county land
ever presented a finer coat of grass. This
year it will be cut for hay, and 1 would not
thank any man to ensure me two tons per acre.
Now for the figurs i

Mr. Editor, what is this land wortli now
(tlie improvements of which cost nothing)
more that) it was when it would produce hut
five bui-he’s of poor corn per acre ? Why, if
there was nothing to go to the credit side of
the account but the improvement alone, it :
would in my estimation be cheap, dirt cheap, j
This field with judicious cultivation, is now
permanently improved as I can show by ma
ny year’s experience in the same kind of treat- ‘
meat.
1 am frequently a. ked, ‘ how do you bring ;
up those old worn-out lands so quickly l” The
answer is found in the above example.
1 have tried guano, and almost every kind :
of manure, in almost every way, nml have til
ways found them to pay well teh- i lpot enough
on —stable manure, leached ashes and guiuto
—pretty much in value as I have named tin in
Will the improvement of these worn-out
lands pay ? is a question 1 uin frequently ask
ed. 1 have every reason to believe it will
I commenced the improvement of the place ,
1 now live on in the year 1833. At that time
I had not pasture sulncicat for one poor cow
and have followed it up ever since, giving it
just as much a ■ was necessary to relieve the j
mind from the harassments ol'n more perplex- ;
ing occupation. The result is, that, instead ‘
of not having one spear of green gross tore-,
fresh the eye or tickle the palate of the poor ]
old cow. or one single oasis in this desert ol
old fields to resort to in the hot summer months,
I have now hundreds of acres of the improved
grasses and have cut during the past year !
hay enough to keep, and keep well, 70 head of I
horned cattle, 35 head of mules and horses. j
besides sundry sheep, hogs, &c. the mules and i
horses being stabled during the year. Night !
b-fare. the Inst, when my house was shook to I
the very foundation by the raging elements !
without, I sat by a cheerful tire and listened
to the peltingK of the pitiless storm of snow j
and rain against the window -'; it was a cheer- ;
ful reflection that, out of all my slock, there
was not one, even to the suckling calf and pel
lamb, but was sheltered front its fury, in warm |
and comfortable stables and were ruminating j
upon beds of clean straw.
1 sat down upon the spur of the moment to ;
write you a short letter, partly to answer sun
dry communications on the subject of fanning, !
which I rcnlly could not devote the time to j
reply toil detail, and partly from a sense of
duty that every man owes to the community 1
in which he fives to give the result of his ex- ,
pcneif ami let the community separate the ‘
wheat from the chaff by their own good judg
m-rnt.
I am fearful the perusal of this will be found
tedious. Should it be otherwise, having clear- !
cd away the brush, and started the plough.
1 may at -onic leisure moment give you some
further pickings from my memoranda of expe
riments and perhaps a description of some of
my stock of Devons and Durhams, of which I
have a fair specimen of the purest blood in
this country.
Let all new beginners keep in view the fol
lowing axioms in forming: Drain your lands
well ; plough deep and at the proper time;
pulverize tlie soil well by repeated ploughing. 1
harrowing, and rolling; put on plenty ofma-1
nure, no matter what it be —every thing in .
that shape you can scrape up, buy, borrow, |
or beg; do not spare the seed and be prodi
gal in grass seeds; be careful and ascertain, j
by observation, the proper time and proper j
‘manner of putting them on the ground, (for i
one is as important as the other.) and old
Zaux himself is not more sure of success,
The question may be asked what I do with
so many mules, horses, and horned cattle ?
They all produce something. The mules arc
employed in hauling wood, &c. to a popula
tion of about two thousand souls here and 1
hereabouts and in hauling for the factories :
and shops, & working on the farm. The hors
es. with the exception of a few for private use.
belong to persons connected with the works
and supplied from my loft. The horned cattle
supply ;.i part tire cities of Baltimore and
Washington with pure fresh milk, sent both
ways from my dairy, daily, via the railroad.
