Terrific Scene with an Elephant* The Philadelphia papers of last week, give the parti culars o* a most terrific scene w rich occurred in that ci ty with the gieat Elephant Columbus. The KeejM*r, Mr Kelly, named, hat since died of his wounds: As his keeper, William Kelly, was preparing hint for the afternoon performances, and in consequence ofhis bem,” struck, he seized Mr. K. with his trunk, and rais i ighiin into the air, dashed him twice to the ground with the utmost violence, breaking his right leg ml thigh in a most shocking manner, and causing many other very serious injuries. The peculiar cry of the cn ianged animal, as he seized Mr. Kelly, warned those m the other part of the building ol what was going on, and rushing to tis quarter where the elephant wus kept, they succeeded in snatching the wounded man out of the way as he was about being seized a third time.— He then commenced a general demolition of every thing within his reach, tearing a number of cages lo atoms, and hurling their fragments in every direction. At thiu tune the utmost terror and excitement prevail ed. lue furious annual, on first coining from his quar ters* P r ‘ ceeded round the room, as if in search of some one, and then returning, seized with his trunk a large cage containing two hyenas, a wolf,a jackall, and some twmtv monkeys, and carrying it into the room, after whirling it a moment in the air, dashed it into a thou sand fragments upon the floor, scattering the animals, and killing some ot the smaller ones. Sonic ran away utidlnd themselves, w i le others, terror-stricken and furious, ran about t w . w hideously. Two elephant do -vv im p'ocinc.l ams thrown into t!;e ring I beau dogs arc used in India to hunt the de -land arc there i aim and to avoid his feet and trunk while they actively fly about, nttackmg him in the most vulnerable parts, and holding him until he can be secu red. But on this occusion they were Iroth struck by die elephant, and so maimed us to be cntiicly useless. They were accordingly removed, and preparations made for shooting the animal, by order of Mayor Swift, who having been sent for shortly alter the accident to the keeper, proceeded immediately to the scene with a large body of police. A gieat crowd had by this time ntsembled around the door both on Walnut street and George, and the large police force v , hardly sufficient, to keep back the crowd, v jo, dtip u tne ig seemed anxious to rush iu and um as the terrible actne of havoc. In th- in*-aiitime the elephant was doing great dam age P ii the fixtures of the establishment within ins reach, tearing down railings, demolishing the arena, and shivering every thing like wood work to atoms Herr Driesbach, who was present, used every effort to intimidate nnd subdue the animal by his well known voice, but in vain. A grappling hook, with a strong rope attached, was thrown into the ring, with a view to catch it in the animal's hide, the thickness of which, however, proved impervious to the assault. Thirty or forty muskets had also been procured from the armory of the Washington Grays, in Franklin Hall, and these were loaded and kt pt in readiness tor use, in the city watchbouse, in Geoigegneet, adjoining the back of the managerie, in the event of the animal s es. aping, as Ins viciouscharacter was well known. Loaded mus kets a ere also placed in the saloon of the building lor the use of those who were in the sid* boxes endeavor ing to catch the elephant. At length n plan was suggested by Mr J J Nathans ■ of Welch s Nation al ircus, which proved sue e a.ui,be ’ ing similar to that used in Charleston, a few year ago. , A siiong rope w*as tied in a tuun.ug noose in such a position that the elephant, in ruumg at those who pla j ced it in its position, must tread in the noose. Tins he did, and immediately the persons who had hold of the rope pulled, and succeeded in catching him by one of the fore legs, when a strong f* rce was at once mustered, and efforts made to pull him to the recess at the south west corner of the building; but the animal, now more furious than ever, ran towards the boxes which de scend from the front gallery to the arena, and in endea voring to ascend, crushed the steps Alc, to atoms with his immense weight, tearing up the benches on either side of him as far up as one fourth i>f the ascent, hurling the pieces at the same time in every direction, and leaving die place a perfect wreck. Finding that it would not sustain his weight, he retreated into the are na, where, after some trouble, a number of large hooka attached to ropes, were very adroitly fastened into his ears, and he was then hauled up into the recess before mentioned, where, by the sell poaa*tio:i and courage . ol Herr Driesbach, he was completely subdued. During the enactment of these exciting ami alarming scenes, the Mayor, acconqmmed by a number of the police, made hi* ap{K*arance, and guve such orders as the circumstances of the case called for, and the police were station* .1 in the front and m the rear ol the build in on George street. Two a x pounders were placed, one in front and the other at llic back of the Alanag erie, with a vi**w to shoot the animal should he attempt to make his exit at either point. A number of small arms were also brought, to be used iu the event of die smaller animals escaping from their cag-’s Fortunate ly, however, there was no necessity for uring them Not l’ ss than two lh<>usand persons were assembled out si.:e die building, and about fifty in the interior of it; aud die crowd did not disperse dll about six o'clock in the evening.” The i*rt>s The art is perhaps the mightiest instrumentality ever contrived by man, for the exertion of moral influence. It is an old custom with housewives to throw into their draw IS every year, a number of fir cones, under the .de i tint their strong resinous sine!l might keep awsy the moth. Mow, ns the odor of these cones is due to turpemms, it occurred 10 Reaumur to try the efli ot o*’ j Ibis volatile liquid He rubbed one side of a prece of doth wnil turpentine, und put some grubs ou the other Hie next morning they were all dead, and si ange to “ay, they had all voluntarily abandoned their sheaths. On smearing some paper slightly with the oil, and put ting Hus into s bottle wuli some of the grubs, the weak est were immediately killed ; the most vigorous strug gled viorntly lor two or three hours, quilled their sheaths, mid died in couvulaknis. it was soon abund ant y evident that the vspur of oil or apuita of turpen tine acts as u terrible poison to the grubs. Perhaps it may be tajd that even tint remedy is worse titan the disease, but as Reamur justly observes, we keep away horn a newly (.aimed room, or leave offlhr a lew days 0 coat from which stains have been removed by turueu - tine, why llieu call we not once a year keep away a day or two, trom rooms dial have been fum.igated with tur pentine I It is, however, surprising, how arnall a quantity of turpentine in . ured, a small piaat ol papei or linen just moistened therewith, and put into the wardrobe or 1 es, -ingle ('■/, two or *!iree times a yaar, ia a suf .l. *, iu (a -eri. lion . gum,>t ni-tlts A small quantity of luipeiitiue dissolve 1 in a liltle spirits of w.ne uhe v 01 ol which i” a.so fatal to tlie moth) will entirely remove the 1 ensive odor, und yet be a sufficient pre ervotivs. The lume* of burning paper, wool, linen, feather., and ol leather are ui-o elleetual, for the insects p risti in a very thick smoke, but the moat e.reetuaj is liiatol tohaeoo.
