We, the subscribers, patrons of the LaGrange Col
legiate Seminary for Young Ladies, under the charge
oi Milton E. Bacon, beg leave to make, to the puhhc,
some expression ol our opinion, in regard to the merits
of thiss important Institution. We feel nohesitation in
saying that we regard it as one of the best Female
Seminariesin our country, and worthy of the confidence
and liberal patronage ot an intelligent public. We re
gard the Principal as eminently qualified for his respon
sible position, and he seems to have spared no pains in
procuring the services of able Assistants in the various
departments of the Institution. It gives ns much plea
sure to be able in this public manner, to express our
high gratification at the improvement which our daugh
ters have made whilst connected with the Seminary,
and having witnessed in them thf* excellent Iruits ot
the moral and intellectual training through which they
have been conducted, we can with greater confidence
commend the Institution to the favorable notice otour
particular Iriends, and to all others who may have
daughters to educate. The examination of the various
classes, now in progress,so far ns we have been able to
give it our attention, lias been ol a highly satisfactory,
character, being conducted iih great fairness and im
partiality. and evincing at once rite ability anet faithful*
ness of the teachers, and the diligence ol the pupils.
The performances of the Young Ladies in local
and Instrumental Alusic were truly admirable, and af
forded abundant evidence that Professor Chase, the
Principal in this Department, is eminently qualified tor
the position which he occupies. We are pleased to
learn that Mr. Bacon’s Seminary has a growing reputa
tion, ami a constantly increasing patronage. During
the present year he has had n larger number of pttpite
than at nny former period. We trust that future years
will mark the same advancement in tiie interest ot the
LaGrange Collegiate Seminary, and that its distin
guished Principal will never fail to receive from a dis
cerning and generous public that encouragement and
support which are due to his sreat efforts and uncom
mon sacrifices in the cause of Female Education.

Or can the North give up her boast ofYorktown’a
closing fightl
Can ve divide, with equal Hand, a Heritage of graves?
Or rend in twain the starry flag that o'er them proudly
( wa yes ?
Can ve cast lots for Vernon’s soil, or chaffer’mid the
gloom
That hangs its solemn folds about your common Fath
er’s tomb!
Or could ye meet around his grave, as fratricidal (oes,
And \sake your burning curses o’er his pure and calm
repose ?
\ k dare not ! is the Alleghanian thunder-toned de
cree !
fiS echoed where Nevada guards the blue and tran
quil sea ;
Where tropic waves delighted, clasp our flowery
Southern shore ;
And where, through frowning mountain gates, Ne
braska’s waters roar!”
The Closing Year.
BY GZORGZ D. THEN TICE.
’Tis midnight’s holy hour, and silence now
Is brooding like a gentle Spirit o’er
Tho still and pulseless world. Hark ! on the winds
The beli’s deep tones are swelling—’tis the knell
Os the departed year. No funeral train
Is sweeping past—yet, on the stream and wood,
With melancholy light, the moonbeams rest
Like a pale, spotless shroud—the air is stirred
As by a mourner's sigh—and on yon cloud
That floats so still and placidly through heaven,
The Spirits of the Seasons seem to stand ;
Young Spring, bright Summer, Autumn’s solemn
form,
And Winter with his aged locks, and breathe
In mournlul cadences that come abroad
Like the far wind-harp’s wiid and touching wail,
A melancholy dirge o'er the dead year;
Gone from the Earth forever.
’Tis a time
For memory and for tears. Within the deep
Still chambeis of the heart, a spectre dim,
Whose tones are like the wizard voice of Time,
Heard from the tomb of Ages, points its cold
And solemn finger to the beautiful
And holy visions that have passed away,
And left no shadow of their loveliness
On the dead waste of life. That spectre lifts
The coffin-lid of Hope, and Joy, and Love,
And, bending mournfully above thepaie
Sweet forms, that slumber there, scatters dead flowers
Over what has passed to nothingness. The year
Has gone, and with it many a glorious throng
Oi happy dreams. Its mark is on each brow,
Its shadow in each heart. In its swift course,
It waved its sceptre o’er the beautilul,
And they are not. It laid its pallid hand
Upon the strong man—and the haughty form
Is fallen, and the flashing eye isdirn.
It trod the hall of revelry, where thronged
The bright and joyous—and the tearful wail
Os stricken ones is heard, where erst the song
And reckless shout resounded. It passed o'er
The battle-plain, where sword and spear and shield
Flashed in the light of mid-day—and the strength
01 serried hosts is shivered, and the grass,
Green from the soil of carnage, waves above
The crashed and mouldering skeleton. It cam*
And faded like a wreath of mist at eve ;
Yet, ere it melted in the viewless air.
It heralded its millions to their home
In the dim laud of dreams.
Remorseless Time—
Fierce Spirit of the Glass and Scythe—what power
Can stay hint in his silent course, or melt
His iron heart to pity! On.stiil on,
lie presses, and forever. The proud bird,
The condor of the Andes, that can soar
Through heaven’s unfathomable depths, or brave
The lury of the Northern hurricane,
And bathe his plumage in the thunder’s home,
Furls h s broad wings at nightfall and sinks down
To rest upon his mountain ciaig—but Time
Knows not the weight of sleep or weariness,
And night’s deep daikness has no chain to bind
His rushing pinion. Revolutions sweep
O’er earth, like troubled visions o’er the breast
01 dreaming sorrow—Cities rise and sink
Like bubbles on the water—fiery Isles
Spring blazing from the Ocean, and go back
To their mysterious caverns—Mountains rear
To heaven their bald and blackened cliffs, and bow
Their tall heads to the plain—new Empires rise,
Gathering the strength ofhoary centuries,
A:i.l rash daw a like the Alpine avalanche,
Startling the nations—and the very Stars,
Yon bright and burning blazonry of God,
Glitter awhile in their eternal depths,
And iike the l’ieiad, loveliest of their train,
Shoot from their glorious spheres and pass a way
To darkle in their trackless void—yet Time,
3 ime, the Tomb-builder, holds his fierce career,
Dark, stern, nil pitiless, arid pauses not
Amid the mighty wrecks that strew his path,
To sit and m tse, like other conquerors,
Upon the fearful ruin he has wrought.
Babnum’s First Operation. —A fevy years
ago, a p naai! drove of Bulla oes were driven
east for exhibition—but the speculation prov
ing a failure, they were so id in Utica N. Vto
pay expenses. The Cleveland Plain Dealer
says:
‘Barnurn hearing of this, lost no time in buy
ing said Buffaloes, getting them cheap. He
took litem to Hoboken, were he hired them to
keep, saying nothing to nobody. He next
went to alt the ferry-men on the river and ask
ed about what their daily receipts were. As
certaining that, he proposed to charter their
services for a single Jay, paying them a slight
increase upon ordinary receipts. To this they
assented, and he hound the bargains by ad
vancing a portion of the pay. Next appeared
barn door bills in flaming capitals posted all
over New-York, that on such a day there
would t>e a grand Buffalo Chase at Hoboken.
Eighteen live Buffaloes Iront the prairies, and
wild Indians mounted on native chargers to
chase them, &c., tic., all tobe seen free gratis
and for nothing ! New York turned out as it
never had done before. The Ferry boats ran
from early lights till 2 o’clock the next morn
ing, loaded to their guards with passengers.
The net proceeds of the whole operation
amounted to SSOOO, and this was the begin
ning of Barnum’s success and his subsequent
fortune.

A test of skill which leaves the above in.
the shade, is reported in the Boston Journal. —-
At Gilmanton, N. H. Nathaniel Whittier,
with his rifle, shot the bowl of a smoking pipe
from a man’s mouth at the distance of eighty
yards, and at the same distance shot an apple
from the head ol another. We do not vouch
for the correctness of this story. The act is
too foolhardy lor belief. Nevcrtheleßao, the
story is told as veritable.
