LaGrange, Oct. 26,1850.
YYV, the sub-criber?. patrons of the LaGrange Col
iegiaie Seminary lor Young Ladies, undw the ciiargr
ot Milton E. Bacon, beg leave to make, to the public,
some expression ol uur opinion, in regard to the merits
ot this important Institution. We feel no hesitation in
saying that we regard it us one of the best Female
■Seminaries in our country, and worthy of the confidence
and liberal patronage of an intelligent public. YYV re
gard th - Principal ns eminently qualified for his respon
sible position, and he seems to have spared no pains in
procuring the services of aide Assistants in the various
departments ot the Institution. It gives us much plea
sure to fit- able in tins public manner, to express our
high gratification at the improvement which our daugh
ters have made whilst connected with the Seminary,
and having witnessed in them the excellent truiis ot
the moral and intellectual training through which ihey
have been conducted, we can with greater confidence
commend the Institution to the favorable notice of our
particular friends, und to ail others who may have
daughte rs to educate. The examination of tire various
classes, now in progrt ss.so far as we have been able to
give it attention, has been ol a highly satisfactory,
characterTbemgconducted with great fairness and im
partiality, and evincing at once the ability anu faithful
iii- ss of the teachers, and the diligence of the pupils.
The pettonnances of the Young Ladies in Vocal
and luauuiueium Mu-t-
ii.rded abundant evidence that Professor Chase, the
Principal in this Department, is eminently qualified for
the position which he occupies. YYV are pleased to
learn that Mr. Bacon's Seminary ins a growing reputa
tion, and a constantly increasing patronage. During
the present year he has had a larger number of pupils
than a! any former period. YYV trust that luture years
will mark the same advancement in the interest ot the
LaGrange Collegiate Seminary, and that its distin
guished Principal will never fail to receive from a dis
cerning and generous public that encouragement and
support winch ore due to his great efforts und uncom

Washing Sta rs and Passages. —The sides
oi stairs or passages on which are carpets or
!oor cloth, should be washed with sponge in
tend oi ii:ienor flannel, and the edges will not
oe soiled.

ip; stir it together and then let it settle afew
nitrates; bottle it and stop close; have ready

Coni Bread. —Readers never tire r.f recipes
>r something good to eat. Here is one lor
urn bread worth trying:
Mix three pints oi’lndian meal in a quart of
our milk; add three eggs, a teaspoonful of
literatus and some salt; beat all to a smooth
•at ter and pour in pans half an inch deep, and
•ake quick. This is sufficient breakfast for
alf a dozen.
fji'/uid Salaratus.— Put the salts into a
•uti le. and add the water till nearly the whole
i dissolved, and cork up for use. A little ex
perience will show you the quantity to use,
nd it insures a perfect and uniform distribu
ion of the alkali in every part of the flour, and
i voids those unsightly and disagreable tasting
pots in biscuits, that can hardly be avoided
.vhen used in the early state
Good Properties and Virtues of milk. —An
xperienced physiologist and chemist, declares
iii!k to be the most perfect diet. There is
irobably nothing belter adapted to our suste
sarice containing curd casein, which is neces
iry for the development and formation of mus
ic—butter for the production of adequate
upply of l it —sugar to feed the respiration,
md thereby add warmth to the body, the
ihosplmtesol lime and magnesia .the peroxide
f chlorides of potassium and soda, with the
.•ee soda, required to give solidity and strength
o the bone —together with the saline parti
les so essentially necessary lor other parts of
lie body. It contains lactic acid,or the acid
f milk, which chemistsinlorm us is the acid
f gastric juice, so requisite for the proper di
flviagof ourlood in the stomach. It is, there
>rc. obvious that tailk should be chemicully
trreet in all its constituents, and that its
encticinl cllcets on the constitution should
ot be neutralized by adulteration. “It is,”
3r. Prout properly bluets “the true type of ail
jod ” How necessary, thcrelore, it fliat it
vould be pure toll ‘ 1 wise, this wonderful and
vise provision of Providence will be a curse
ather than a blessing.
Management of Negroes. —The master
hould never establish any regulation among
is slaves until he is fuliy convinced of its pro
riety and equity. Being thus convinced and
aving issued his orders, implicit obedience
hould be required and rigidly enforced.—
firmness of manner, and promptness to en
ree obedience, will save much trouble, and
■e tiie means of avoiding the necessity for
nuch whipping. The negro should feel that
is master is Ins law giver and judge ; and
et is las protector ami friend ; but so far
ibove him. as never to be approached save
in the most respectful manner. That where
lie has just cause, he may with due deference
approach his master and lay before him his
!roubles ami complaints; but not on false pre
texts or trivial occasions. If the master be
i tyrant. Lis negroes may be so embarrassed
by his pretence as to be incapable of doing
tiieir work properly when he is near. — Culti
vator.
Negro Punishment. — In the infliction of
punishment it should be borne in mind that
the object it?, correction, if the negro is hum
ble and appears duly sensible of the impropri
ety ot his conduct, a very moderate chastise
ment will answer better than a severe one.
If. however, he is stubborn or impertinent, or
per evert s in what you know to be a lalsebood,
a slight punishment will Only make bad worse.
The negroslii‘ul::,;liow -ver,see from yourcool,
yet. determined manner, that it is not in conse
ijU nee of your excited temper, but ofhis fault
and for his cone tion that he is punished As
a general principal tlie legal maxim that “it
is. better ninety and nine guilty persons should
escape than one innocent should suffer,” is
correct. It, however, has its exceptions. Ifj
for instance, the negroes lake to killing your
pigs, or stealing your chiekens'and eggs, and
you cannot ascertain who is guilty, it is only
necessary to put the whole crowd on half all
lowance of meat for a few days and the evi
vviil end. This remedy is better than a per
petual luss and suspicion of all.— Cultivator.
Wine.—Almost every body now-a-days has
a vine — either Isabella or catawba, but not
half of us ever get a good crop of grapes.
The difficulty, when the seasons arc long
enough, is pretty much all owing to the igno
rance ol pruning for pruning is to a grape vine
what a pond :s to young ducks, something not
10 be done without. The two great mistakes
in pruning hardy grapes, is not cutting enough
wood in the winter pruning, and cutting too
much in the summer pruning. If you wish to
have .your vine thrive and well open to the.
sou. prune ii as clean in February or March as
you please. If you wish to stunt and diminish
the size of your crop of grapes by one half, de
lay summer pruning till they .vre as large as
marrow fat peas, and then make slashing
work o f ’ it. Os course, in this way you will
take oil about a third ot ail the young leaves
dud give a check to the plant, like a jog on a
railroad, made by throwing a locomotive off
lhe track. But you have “let the sun in to
the grapes.” and tiie grapes will thank you for
it, by growingbout halfas fast and two-thirds
as large as they would have done if you had
shor:e ic 1 tli i shoo.s tea days earlier, and takes
off’about halfas much The grape leaf likes
the hottest sun—but nature hangs the clus
ters of Iruii under the shade of the foliage,
and you won’t take the iiint from her. she will
set you to thinking why your vines “turn out
so poorly/’ li you find that your soil is poor,
and if the crop does not|uct and swell off ptop
er!}'. give them a good dose ol soapsuds or
liquor manure at lhe roots once a week. —
Grape vines arc cormorants, and if you want
large and fine fruit, you must give them no
lionufipatliic doses of manure.
Negro Clothing.— As] to clothing. less
than three suits a year of every day clothes
will not keep a negro decent, and many of
them require more. Children, particularly
boys, are worse than grown persons on their
e! it!, s, arid consequently require more of
them. I have npver been able to t keep a boy
Horn ten to sixteen years of age, decently
clothed with less than lour suits a year; nor
would tiiat answer, if some of the women were
not compelled to do their mending. It is also
important that women who work out should,
iu addition to their usual clothing, have u
change of drawers for winter.
Refusing to Accept Freedom.—The
Memphis Eagle, of the sth inst., states that
some eighty negroes, made free by the will of
’ Mr. Jones, who recently died in that county,
refused to leave the plantation, or to accept
their freedom and go to Illinois, where the
brother of Mr. J. had located a tract of land
for them pursuant to the will ot the deceased.
Value cf Porpoises.— At a recent Indus
trial Exhibition held in Montreal, Canada, a
specimen ol leather, made from the ektn ol the
Porpoise, was shown, which attracted much
notice. The skin of the fish can be t urned in
to leather of most excellent quality, being soft
and pliant as kid, yet strong and tough beyond
belief.
