•* tV Hat! has one dared to write me a letter un
fit for my wife to read?”
“Ob, no. It is couched in the most chaste lan
guage : but the disgrace S”
The husband eagerly caught up the letter and
commenced reading the epistle that had been the
means of nearly breaking his wife’s heart. Reader
vv> i couldn’t guess the cause in an age. It was no
other than a bill from the printer for nine yeari

X most sensible woman!
There are some readers of the Courier whose
wives would be sorely rosed on seeiug the bills
dae for subscription to the Courier.
We shall consider the expediency of addressing
duplicate bills to these good ladies, if their hus
b t ids do not nettle their scores in good time.—

The above is commended to certain very xure
but rather slow patrons of the Metxtngtr.
Slavery Waxix-j rx Missouri.—The St. Louis
Democrat says that upwards of four hundred slaves
leave that State every week, nearly all of whose
go to the South, and argues that this draining
mut soon rid the State of slavery. This activity
in the slave market is occasioned ia great part by
the present high prices obtained, though there are
doubtless other causes that have their influence*—
The gross receipts of money in Missouri from this
source, this year, it is thought will amount to mill
ion* of dollars. The money market has already
received sensible relief in consequence.
So lo.'tg as the demand for slave labor in the
more Southern States can be supplied from home,
there will tie not be an object in obtaining negroes
from abroad.— Journal us Commerce.
£3“?” Ex-Governor Seymour, of New York, re
cently made a speech in St. Paul, Minnesota.—
Speaking of slavery, he truthfully said: “It is sus
tained by the firm of‘Weaver, Wearer A Plantar,’
and two of the partners live up North. Every one
knows but for the looms of New England and Old
EughnJ it could not live a day. The loudest de
nanciations against slavery are made by men with
cotton shirts on their backs. The most fervent pul
pit exhortations against slavery come from men who
v. rap themselves for repose at night in cotton sheets;
who lay their heads upon cotton pillows, and go to
rh ep thanking God that they are better than the
niau down South.”
Sad Death.—Mrs. Nelson, said to be the wife of
Gen. Nelson, a prominent man in Georgia, during
hi- life, and once Keeper of the Penitentiary, died
at the residence of Dr. R. R. Winfrey in Ogle
thor;*e county, on the nighbof the 22d Inst., of ty
phoid fever. She came to his house the dav be
fore, in company with her son, pennyless. This is
trulv a sad instance of the fickleness of fortune.
We learn that her maiden name was Meeks.—

MACON COUNTY GBAUD JURY PRESENTMENTS.
The Grand Jury sworn, chosen and selected for
the September Term, 1859, of Macon Superior
Court, beg leave to make the following general
presenttiient:
We have by our committees examined the books
and records of the Clerks the Superior
ami luferior Courts of this county, and find them
neatly and correctly kept; doing credit to the res
pective clerks, and justice to the publie. We find
two hundred and sixty-eight dollars and fifty-three
cents, ia the hands of the Clerk of the Inferior
Court, belonging to the pauper fund, undisposed of.
We find upon examination of the county Trea
sury books, that they are neatly aud correctly kept,
and the following is a statement returned to us by
the Treasurer, a* a statement of the County funds
now in his hands:
General county fund now on hand undis
posed of, ft 88 57
Court house fund on hand undisposed of.. 181 07
Bridge fund on hand undisposed of 224 7fi
Aggregate, $1,194 42
Cpon examination of the public building*, to-wil:
the Court house and Jail, we find no improvements
neci --ary, except that a j>i**ce of timber should be
attached to the iron door of the Jail, so as to pre
vent p.*r*ons conhncd therein, from being able to
get to and injure the locks thereon. And we re
commend the Inferior Court to have the same done.
On account of the absence of the Ordinary,
(which we very much regret) we have been unabie
to examine into the records of his otßce and make
a report thereon.
For the want of time, we are unable to recom
mend any satisfactory plan for the laying off the
county into school districts. And for the want of
a better system or plan, we recommend that the
funds now on hand, or that may be raised this
year for the education of the poor, be applied un
der the present law, to the payment of teachers
that have taught poor children the pre-ent year—
and to the payment of outstandiag'demauds ag linst
that fund, already incurred.
In taking leave of his Honor, Henry G. Lamar,
we tender him our heartfelt sympathy, for his groat
and heavy atHiction, in the recent loss of one of hi*
family. We also tender him our thanks for the
aide, prompt and impartial manner that he has dis
charge,! the duties of his office in this conniy.
We also tender our thanks to the Solicitor Gen
eral, T. W. Montfort, for his attention and courte
sy to our holy. We recommend that these pre
sentments be published in Journal and Messenger,
printed at Macon, Ga.

thousand of sufferers from the dysentery and diarrhcea have
been relieved liy the use of Uostetter’s Bitters, a medicine
which is evidently destined to ma'ntain a permanent place
In the public estimation. Bilious diarrhoea is one of those
diseases which bailies the skill of the physician. The medi
cine they administer to act upon the bowels never seems to
reach the source of the evil. The difficulty is to get a reme
dy that will reach ail the digestive organs, and give then,
simultaneously a rush of vigor, to rid themselves of this dis
cats. This problem is solved by the Bitters, which never fail
to conquer the most stubborn cases. It is only fair to say,
that during the season just elosed, this medicine has achiev
ed more cures than any other ever presented to the public
aud during the fall, which thac terrible scourge, the fever ami

Scrofula, or Kiiuf'ti Evil,
ISa consttilutional disease, a corruption of the blood, by
J which his> iluid becomes vitiate J, we tk, and poor. Be
ing in the circulation, it pervades ttie whole body, and may
burst out in disease on any part of it. No organ is free from
its attacks, nor is there one which it may not destroy. The
scrofulous taint is variously caused by mercurial disease,
low tiring, disordered or unhealthy food, impure air, filth
and filthy habits, the depreS'ing vices, and, above all, by
the venereal Infection. Whatever be its origin, it is heredi
tary in the constitution, descending “ from parent? to child
ren unto the third and fourth generation;” indeed, it eerua
to be the rod of Him who says, “ 1 will visit the iniquities of
the fathers upon their children.”
It. effects commence by deposition from the Idoo 1 of cor
rupt or ulcerous matter, which, in the longs, liver, ami in
ter uat organs, is termed tubercles ; in the glands,swellings ;
and on tlie surface, eruptions or sore*, this fouPeorrup
tion, which gender* the blood, depresses tlieenerpies of life,
so that scrofulous constitutions not only suffer from scrofu
lous complaints, but they have fir less power to withstand
the attacks of oilier disease* ; consequently, vast numbers
pel ish by disorders which, although not scrofulous in their
nature, are still rendered fatal by this taint in the system.
M ist of the consumption which decimates the human family
h?s it* origin)indirectly injthis scrofulous contamination;
and many destructive diseases of the liver, kidneys, brain,
and, indeed, of ail the organs, arise from or at e aggravated
by the same cause.
One quarter of ail our people are scrofulous ; their persons
are invaded by this linking infection, and their health is’
undermined by it. To cleanse it from the system we must
renovate the blood by an aiter.tive mc.llclr.e, and invigo
rate It by healthy food and exercise. Such a medicine we
supply in
Ayer's Compound l?\lr*rl of Sarsaparilla
the most effectual remedy which the medical skill of our
t ines ran devise for this every where prevailing and fatal
malady. It is combined from the most active remedials
that have been discovered for the expurgation of this foul
and aorder from the blood, and the rescue of the system from
iu destructive consequences. Hence it should lat employe 1
for the cure of not only scrofula, but a'so those other affec
tions which arise from it, such a? Eruptive and Skin Disea
se., Ft Anthony's Fire, Rose, or Erysipelas, Pimples, Pus
tules. Blotches, lllain*. and Bolls, Tumors, Tetter and Fait
Rliegiu, Roald Head, Ringworm, Rheumati-m,Syphilitic and
Mercurial Diseases, Jlropav, Dyspepsia, Debility, and, in
deed, al! Complaints arising from Vitiated or Impure blood.
The popular belief in “impurity of tire Mood” is founded in
truth, for scrofula i? a degeneration of the blood. The par
ticular purpose and virtue of this R trsapari'da is to purify
and regenerate this vital lluid, without which sound health
i* impossible in contaminated constitutions.
Ayer’s Catliartie Pills,—For :iii the
‘Ptnrpwes of ;t Fnsiiily Physie,
are so composed that disease within the range of their action
cm rarely withstand or evade them. Their penetrating
properties search, and cleanse, and invigorate every portion
of the human organbui, correcting its diseased action, and
restoring its healthy vitalities. Asa consequence of these
properties, tlie in va'id who is bowed down with pain or pla vsi
cal dability is astonished to find his health or energy restor
ed by a remedy at once so simple and Inviting.
Not only do they cure the every-day complaint* of every
body, but also many formidable and dangerous diseases.
The Aip'nt below named i pleased to furnish gratis my
American Almanac, containing certificates of their cures
and directions for their use in the following complaints:
Convenes*, Headache arising from disordered Rlrmnch,
N;tW a. Indigestion, I’ain and Morbid Inaction of the Bow
eh . Ftstulen-y, Los* of Appetite, Jaundice, and other kin
dred complaints, arising from a low state of the body or
obstructions of its functions.
Ayer’s Olierry Pectoral,
For the rapid cure of Coughs, Colds, lnfluenza, Hoarseness,
Croup, and for the relief of Consumptive Patients in ad
vanced stag -s of the disease.
8o w ide is the field of its usefulness and so numerous are
the cases of Its cares, that almost every section of country
abounds in persons publicly known, who have been restored
from vlarnflng and even desperate tlisessfis of tjie lungs by
its use. When once tried, its superiority over every other
medicine of-its kind is too apparent to escape observation,
and where its virtues are known, the public no longer hesi
tate, whurantidote to employ for the distressin and dan
gerous affections of the pulmonary organs that are incident
to onr climate. While many inferior remedies thrust upon
the community have failed an%l been discarded, this lias
g tined friends bv every trial, conferred benefits on the
afflicted they can never forget, and produced cures too nu
merous and too remarkable to be forgotten.

The Drags’ Patent Piano Forte.
I A.II now ready to answer the oft repeated question,
“Who makes the best I’iancs f” I answer unqualifiedly,
DRIGGS, I’AKMALKE A CO., of New York. I have been
tuning Pianos 2 i years, and claim to understand the instru.
ment thoroughly. I liave been North expressly to ascertain
who m ikes the best P.anos. 1 have seen every part of the
Driggs P-ano, and several oilier celebrated ones, in process
of being made. The Driggs Piano far excels ail others, in
two very important particulars, viz: volume and sweetness
of tone, and capacity for staying in tune. The tone is pro
duced as much as possible like the Violin, there being two
sounding-boards convex outwards. The heavy, thick planks,
blocks and braces are done away with, to a chandler is
formed for sound. The power and sweetness of tone is equal
to that of the best Grand Piano.
The capacity for staying in tune depends on a newly in
vented Iron Fiame, or bed-plate, which sustains all the
strain, and is entirely free from the vibratory part of the
Instrument. There is a great improvement in the manner
of putting on the Strings, they not being liable to rust or to
jar attheir bearings, mid in Hie arrangement of the dampers.
The Ranges, hammers, back catches, and every part of the
action is trade in a manner that cannot be excelled. The
following is from Thalberg:
“ Mr S. B. Driggs—l have examined your new Piano
Forte, ami cordially approve of its system of construction ;
its principles by which great increase of vibratory power is
obtained, being very simple and perfectly philosophical.—
The tone is grand and noble. It has great capacity for sus
taining the sound or ringing, and its volume of tone, or
power, I have never heard excelled in depth, purity, and
sympathetic sweetness. S. THALBERG.”
Similar certificates have been received from Gotschaik,
Strakosch, Mason and many other eminent arti.ts.
One of these instruments may be seen at Messrs. Virgins.
We shall be aide soon to fill orders not only with these pian
os, but others of a very neat pattern —four large round
corners, gothic legs, rose-wood, 0 octaves, so arranged that
pieces can be played on them the same as on the 7 octave
pianos, except on the lower bass notes. Also, 7 octave pi
anos, of tlie same make and pattern, which we will sell sur
prisingly cheap The Driggs piano will be sold at about the
same prices as other pianos, according to finith of case.
I have the agency for the sale of these pianos fur the State
of Georgia. Orders from any pun of the State will be prompt
ly attended to. 0. B. RICE.
