11. Keys, Sec’y of War.
The following is the aiuioymous letter received
Secretary ol War, at Washiirgion
Cincinnati, Aug. 12th, 185S.
sia—l Lave recently received information of a
’Movement of so great iuiporUuee that I feel it to
tM my duty to impart it to you without delay. I
baTe discovered the eaiaUwwo of a secret associa
tion haring for iu object the deliberation of the
slave* ot the Mouth by general insurrection. The
adar of the movement is old John Brown, late of
K.niaao. He has been in Canada during tiro winter
drilling the negroes, and they are only waiting his
word to to start to the sout!i to assist the slaves.
They have as one of their leading men a w liite
man hi an armory in Maryland. Where it is situ
ated I have not been enabled to learn.
As aoor. as everythin? is ready, those of their
number who are iu the Northern States and Cana
<l* are to come in small companies to the rendea
♦ eua, winch •* in the moon Unis of Virginia. They
wi I pass down through Pennsylvania and Maryland,
and enter Virginia at Harper’s Ferry. Brow'u ielt
the North about three or lour weeks ago. and wiii i
•rm the negroes, and strike the blow in a few I
weeks; so that whatever io done must be done at 1
once. They have large qnantiiics of arms at their
rendaaToo*, and are probably distributing them
*:rosr.
I not fully iu tbeir confidence, and this is all
t information I can give vow. I dare not sign
mv name to this, bat trust that yon will not disre
gard the warning
The following account of the arm; of the insur
gents was found, among qthyr things, at Cook’s
hyu’e; 16**} pikes, made in Connecticut, with
!:ao4>C* *U leet long, and brond, lint two-edged
blade, one foot long ; 900 Sharp’s rifles ; one box
vs revolvers; one box of awords.
Brown denies that any others except those pres
ent at the Kerry arc connected with the enter prise.
11 a wounded -on says that other parties at the
North were connected with them.
