A tieorjria Wedding.
The preacher was prevented from taking his part
in tlie ceremony, and a newly elected Justice of
the Peace, who chanced to be present, was called
upon to officiate in his plaee. The man’s knees
began to tremble, for he had never tied the knot,
.uid did not know where to begin. He had no
Georgia Justice, or anv other book from which to
read the marriage service. The company was ar
ranged in a send circle, each one hearing a tallow
candle. He thought of everything he had learned,
even to —
“ Thirty days hath September,
April, June, and November,’’
but all in vain; he could recollect nothing that suit
ed the occasion. A suppressed titter all over the
roomjadmouished hiui, and in the agony of despera
tion lie began :
“ Know all men by these present?, that I—”
Here he paused, and looked up to the ceiling,
while a voice in the corner of the room was heard
to sa v ;
“ lie is drawing a deed for a tract of land,” and
they all laughed.
“ In the name of God, Amen!” he begun again,
only to hear another in a loud whisper sav:
“ He is making his will: f thought he could not
live long, he look? so powerfully bad.”
“ Now 1 lay me down to sleep,
I pray—”
was the next essay, when some ctudite gentleman
remarked:
“ lie’s uot. dead but sleepeth;”
“ Oil. yes,” continued the ’Squire.
A voice replied.
“ Oh, no, oh, no, don’t let's.”
Some person out of doors sung out: “ Come in
to court !’ and the laughter wa-i general.
The biide was near fainting, the ’Squire was not
far trom it ; but becoming an indefatigable man,
began again :
“ To all and singular the sher—
“ Let's run, he’s going to levy on us,” said two
or three at once.
Here a gleam ol light flashed acrosss the Squire’s
face : he ordered the bride and groom to hold up
their hands, in a solemn voice, said :
“ ou and each of you, do solemnly swear, in
the presence of the present company, that you will
perform towards each other and singular, the func
tion.? of the husband and wife, as the case may be,
to the best of your knowledge and ability, so help
you God.” *
*’ Good as wheat? ’ exclaimed the father of the
bride.
A T ~,. -A.....* ia vc icieieiHi clergy
man, who was as well known for his eccentricities
as his talents, one day sent his son, a lazy lad,
about twelve years of age, to catch his horse. The
boy was sauntering along with an ear of corn in
one hand, and the bridle in the other, dragging
the reins along on the ground.
“Oliver!’ said his father, calling after him in a
solemn tone of voice, “come here, Oliver, 1 want
to sav n word to you before you go.”
The lad returned, and the parson proceeded:
“ Aon know, Oliver, I have given you a great
deal of good counsel. You know I've taught you,
before closing your eyes, to sav,
‘ Now I lay me down to sleep,’ &c.
besides a good” many other tilings in the way of
exhortation and advice. But this is the last oppor
tunity I may ever have of speaking to you. I
couldn’t let it pass without giving you mv parting
advice. Bea good boy, Oliver, and always sav
that pretty prayer before going to sleep. I fear I
shall never see you again.’’
As he said this in a very solemn manner, tlie
poor boy began to be frightened, aud burst into
tears with this exclamation :
“ You’ll never see me again, pa?”
“No —lor I shnl 7 probably die bifore you <7l l

The Management of the Voice.—l am onlv
relating a simple fact when I say that almost every
error in the use of mv poor lungs, throat, palate,
tongue, teeth, stomach and nasal organ hail their
day w ith me ; and rarely do I hear a clergyman
read but I recognize one or more of the same
blunders. A common fault in reading is the
monotone ; and when, as I sometimes hear, there
is this drowsiness of tone added to a “ drift,” or
sec-saw of measured cadences, at the same time,
why then even the whole tune of “ lullaby, baby,”
itself cannot be compared to such soothing sounds
for rocking the cradle of the hearer’s brains. Now,
reading in a church want* so much breath, vou
cannot afford to waste any. The labor is so great
to the vocal organs you cannot afford to tire them
needlessly. The voice required is loud ; you can
not afford to lose any of the aids of intonation,
articulation, or reverberation. In one word, your
lungs, throat and mouth form one complicated
machine. In reading in a church these organs are
applied to anew purpose, almost as different a9
singing is from talking; and the wisest thing a
young curate can do is to take a course of lessons
from a good elocution jnaster. Nor could anv be
nevolent Churchman spend his money better than
in maintaining a clerical reading master for the
heretic of the diocese. Many a clergyman, for
w-ant of knowing the benefit he could derive from
a course of reading, inflicts a cruel draßl on his
congregation, and unnecessary labor on himself.
As to the clerical sore throat, the barrister and
the speaker are alike free from it. The dissenting
preacher is also free. It is strictly an orthodox
complaint. It comes not from talking, but from
reading, and no doubt chiefly from leading badly.
Though I w ould impress that any man may sustain
injurv if he reads when he has a sore throat.—
Twenty Years in the Church.
A British officer writing from Teheran, Persia,
to tlie ‘ London Times,’ remarks:—“ A Cathartic
Pill manufactured by ‘an American Chemist’ (Dr.
.1. C. Ayer, of Lowell, Mass.) has cured the Shall
of a Liver Complaint that threatened his lile. This
simple fact, as might be expected, reuders the
Americans immensely popular here; while we Eng
lish are overlooked. Doubtless our own scholars
made the discoveries which he employs, and thus
it is in everything; we do thelabot, then the mous
ing-Americans put their mark on it and take the
rewaid. Doer. Ayer is idolized bv the Court and
its retainers here, which will doubtless be reflected
to him on a gold sntift’ box, or diamond billed
sword, w-hile not the name even of Davy, Christo
son or Btodie—the great lights by which he shines,
is known.” —Xtv York Sunday Paper.
Valuable as a Condenser. —A man who does
not claim to be a judge of swine, says: “Last
spring l bought a little pig from a drore, and he
was good for eating but not grow much.—
He got so after a week or two, that ho would eat a
large bucket full at a time, and then, like Oliver
Twist, called for more. Well, one morning I car
ried out a water bucket full ot dough, and after ho
bad swallowed it all, 1 picked up the pig and put
him in the same bucket I had fed it lrom, and the
little cues did 1 nt half Jill it.”
Hydropathy. —The following hit at the water
cure was made by Charles Lamb, and none but
himself could have made so quaint a conceit. *• It

The Main Fkcne Kail Roap.—Since the
of the late lamented president ot the Main Trunk
Road, l)r. James IN Screven, the duties of that
ofhee have been discharged by Hiram Roberts

cuting the work with energy and success. The
cavs run daily to n point below Magnolia in Clinch
bounty, 12H milts from Savannah, and only ‘>t>
miles from the Alapaha river. The gradin';- to
this river is all done, the iron is on the spot'and
being laid down at the rate of two miles a week,
and without some uiifoneen occurrence prevents 1
the banks of that stream will be reached bv the
middle of February next. From the Aiapufato

vigor with which the road is bein” pushed ‘o its
completion leads us to believe that a year from this
time will see the locomotive roll into the company’s
depot at this thriving town. Already wc ai eiu
receipt ol cotton from Middle Florida by this
route, and every day will increase the quantity
as the road has just entered the country which is
rich ami populous. The benefits we will derive

Dtr.Ecr Importation. —At a large meeting of the
merchants of Richmond, Va., resolutions were
passed in favor of establishing business age nek os in
Lurope, and making direct shipments of all manu- ‘
factured goods thence to James river.
It the whole South had adopted this police vcar3
since, she would have been in a far more fodepen

has been to ignore Southern men, and Southern
enterprise, until supineftesK, and almost
dependence have become her portion. —Madison
