of Spectators
CuiUßlDtl, March lft.—The third act in the
great Virginia tragedy was performed to day in
tbe presence of a rut a*embt*ge of spsx utors,
aho hocked in from the aurrouading country in
( numtefi, (here being no military law to pre
vent their tree iugrew and egreaa.
The scaffold was erected on the same spot
where Uapt. Brown and hie aeaociatea were pre
vioTtiy suspended, and the throng of spectator*
was larger than at either of the preceding eaecu
litaft
At noon the prisoners were brought out of tire
jail, where a large military escort, composed of all
tur companies of Jefferaon co., the Berkley aud j
Clarke liuirds aud the Winchester companies, were I
jr.tn up in line around the jail. Hazfrit and Ste 1
veus bath advanced with firm step and took their j
*>ita on their respective coffins, and the military .
procession and guard forming around them, they 1
proceeded to the place of execution.
At eight minute* past twelve o'clock, after bid !
ding adieu to their friends and jailors on the gal-1
tows, the rope* were attached to their neck* and !
•hey were swung off. flaziett teemed to die very !
easy ; but Steven*, who was a powerful and ele- i
gant formed mac, with strong muscular develop-:
ment, struggled for a considerable time and rp- >
peered to suffer very much.
Both iia/lctt and Steven* exhibited great firm
ness and resignation, fully equal to that displayed
by Captain Brown and their other companions in
the Harper’s Ferry Insurrection.
There were no religious exercise* on the gal
lows, as they persisted in refusing all the kindly
offers of the ministry to comfort them in their
Ust momenta. Both of them were spiritualists,
and had a peculiar religion of their own, which
enabled them to meet their fate with cheerfulness j
and resignation.
Both their bodies have been forwarded to Mar
cus Spring, South Amboy, New Jersey. They
will reach Baltimore in the early morning train.

should be put on to the acre. In using the four tons I
bought of you last Spring, 1 put on at the rate of one bun
dred and thirty pounds per acre, and am of the opinion
that about one hundred and fifty pounds would pay much
better for the labor bestowed in the cultivation. The man
ner of using was to lay off cotton rows with a Scutter Plow ;
plow pretty deep, and let hands follow after and scatter the
Phosphate, and others with plows, and bed on, as part of it
was sown along the furrows. 1 want you to send me nine
