Macon, April $4 1900.
.Vetrrt. Editor* —Pieae direct the aiteauoe
of our opposition friends, who are inclined to the
support of ilr. Douglas, to the concluding remarks,
of Waco, the special correspondent of the Dally
Telegraph, from St. Louis. And there let them
le*ra the tree csase of his popularity. He is truly
B'uck R-publ’can if Waco is correct. I hope no
rjoee of the opposition wi.l espouse his csus* or
commit themseires to his support, while he is so
particularly the friend of the Black Republican
party of St. Lotus. Mo. cos.
The following is the paragraph referred to by
*• Lfocon ”we presume.— EX a. Jfe*.
Pohtics are in a mixed state here—this city, ow
ing to It* preponderating tienoari element and
proximity to the North, is decidedly Black Repub
lican in politics ; tet the State is round to the
sery core in tiouthern insti utions. The day is not
far off. however, when M seouri will ceae to be a
tuveuolding State. The emancipation sentiment
Js growing, aud Black Republicanism dares to
raiie its hydra head in various parts ofit. A free
sod Congressman has alreadv been sent to Wash
ington troni this District, and Republican Conven
tions in the interior are getting frequent. Slave
property, mean a bile, is getting less secure, sod
prices are so lo* that purchases for the Gulf States
are absorbing the slave population fast. Gangs ot
negroes, tShutoeriug 75 aud Imj, often leave on a
single steamboat for the rsouth, arid a Urge Ger
man immigration Is coining in from the North.
All these combined causes have produced another
anomaly unknown, it is believed, in every other
Soujbern stale, vix : the dissemination ot Aboli
tion doctrines in our very mi-lst. Helper’s Impen
ding Crisis is publicly sold in several sections ot
B.aeouii, and eveu Mr. Lloyd Garrison's paper
pesae* muster at toe Post-oiSce. It wouldn’t be
surprising if a negro insurrection happened within
a few years. Douglas is not popular outside of St.
Louis. The democracy is demoralized here b\
the repeated Republican victories, and accordinglr
e see them panderiugwo Northern doctrines of
ten, a good Southern Democrat stay away from tin
polls on that very account, believing that defeat,
ou a sound platform, is preferable to success with
a rotten one.

Nsw Orleass, March —Another assault was
attempted on Vera Cruz ou the night of the 19th.
It was, however, quickly repulsed.
Carvajal's force had captured a convoy of fifteen
wagon loads of munitions of war, with provisions
aud twenty-five hundred dollars in specie. It was
captured near JaUpa, and wag destined for Mira
moa’i army. It was guarded by seven hundred
men, all ot whom were dispersed.
Miratnon raised the siege of Vera Crux on the
21st, aud had withdrawn his troops towards the
Capital.
Intelligence from the city of Mexico to the 18th
lust., has been received. After the capture of
Commodore Marin’s steamers, Gen. Miranion sent
a decree to the Capital, confiscating all American
property, and ordering ail Americana out of the
country.
Congrenshiual.
In the United States on Thursday the Commit*
tee ou commerce reported a bill providing for the
introduction of Rogers’ code of marine aignals. It
was passed to a second reading. The resolution
providing for the adj mrouient of Congress from
the 20th of April to the 21st of May, iu order to
allow the members to attend the National Conven
tions, was taken up, and finally voted down. Sev
eral unimportant bills were passed and the Senate
adjourned. The House passed the Army Appro
priatiou biiL The Trench Spoliation bill was re
ported from the Committee on Foreigu Affairs. A
message was rec ived from the President protesting
against the action ot the House ou Mr. Covode's
resolution in relation to the investigation of charges
against himself. Mr. Buchanau speaks very iudig
uantly, saying he is uot allowed, by the course ot
the House the privileges intended to a pickpocket,
and solemnly protests against the proceedings as a
breacn of the powers of a co-ordinate branch of
the government, and subversive of iu coustitution
al independence. The message created some feel
ing m the bouse, aud after a sharp debate, was re
ferred to the Committee on the Judiciary.

At about hilf-pv-t If o’clock, Wednesday night,
the La Grange Female College was discovered to
be ou fire ; but uufortunatelv, too late to extin
guish the dimes or to save anything from the
building. A concert had been given in the cnap
el <> i the same night by Mr. .Sqciiu.B, and at half
past 9 o’clock the doors had been closed, and, as
we are informed, the lights all extinguished. Va
fious coujecturea are afloat as to the origin of me
fire , but, as yet, nothing definite has been biought
to light. Probably no one is acquainted with the
real cause, and it may be considered one of those
calamities Which no diligence can avoid or fore
see. The flames spread very rapidly, so that by
the time the crowd assembled the building was
failing in. Prof. Diuuom aud fatally, aho occu
pied a part of the third story, being the only per
sons rooming in the building, were fortunately
aroused in time to save themselves.
The building is a total loss, the Insurance having
expired but a short time ago. It waa one of the
finest school buildings m the South—having cost,
if we mistake not, forty thousand dollars. The
building had in it at the time, anew Pi.iiosopbical
and Chemical Aparatus which cost about a thous
and dollars, together with the libraries of the J mi
son and Henlx societies, numbering in the aggre
gate about 2.00 U volumes. Toe individual looses
were, also great. Prof. Briggs’ large musical
library, together with an extensive assortment ot
sheet music, several Pianos and various other mu
sical instruments, and, also, valuable papers and
upon which he bad an insurance of
about two-thirds were consumed. Prof. Dicgsos
saved nothing—sustaining a loss on library, furni
ture, etc., of between twelve and fifteen hundred
dollars, upon which he had an insurance of three
hundred dollars.
Ptof. Heard snd the President also sustained
the loss of many valuable articles. This most ele
gant building reared bv the munificence of our
citizene and triends throughout the State can be
rebuilt ouly by an appeal to the noble generosity
of the friends of Learning both here and through
out the State. It was a noble structure and had
been consecrated to a noble purpose —“The Edu
cation of Woman”—-a motto which can still be
seen carved on the front wail ot the smoking ruin,
osd ose which should appeal to the sympathy and
generosity of every lover of literature and friend
of humanity.
The exercises of the College were resumed this
morning, snd by Monday ample arrangements will
bs made for every department. —La (Jrany* iUy^r
