fltim:—The Flection is near at
la fear weeks from this day, the fate *f
the Union will be decided lor tbe presept, and per
haps foeceer.
t>ur eotaiies are ia tbe fie M—bold, active and
defiant. The Vandal horde* of the North, with
iheir army of *• Wide Awake*,” and Black Re
pcMican hannocs streaming to the wind,” are
hearing down npon ns. At be South, the Seeee
*:-,r iitte, tbe Fire-eaters, the Fililbnsters, and all
ih ilisuniou hosts are ai<o in the field and mnr
•hatlnl for lie doatt notion of the Government
wb eh our Fathers left us—whilst the prudent and
eocsrmtivc uien of tire nation are aghast, at the
horrors with which we are threatened.
Why should they be so* The conservative
Foien men. es the State and Nation, are in the
majority. Why then stand appalled at dangers
we may avert? Is it because we are divided
among ourselves, as to a mere preference between
men ? The fact is unworthy of us. Bell men !
Boughs mc-n ! You are alike national—equally
devoted to the Union-—why not lay aaide yonr dif
ferences, and come together for tun sake of our
glorious cause ?
Divided, you are apathetic—because too have
ao hope of carrying the State singly agaiust the
fire-eaters, and in the Legislature you cannot suc
ceed. But unite—come together on a Common
Electoral Ticket, and at once, hope revives—nav,
it id certain you can beat back tbe disunion forces
and carry tbe State.
This can be easily done. In two week*, tbe
Ticket can be arranged, and in two weeks more,
wa can raise such a storm of caihuainm as will
bear down all opposition and will save the State for
the Union.
Bell Men ! Union Men! No one doubts our
devotion to a Coostittitional Union. Tbe great
Conaooer of Illinois, Srtrwtx A. Do tot. as has
given the most unequivocal evidences of his at
tachment to it. Only a few days ago, at Jones’
Woods, be even went so far as to intimate bis
willingness to decline the present candidacy, if it
should be deemed expedient hy bis friends, in or
der to ensure tbe defeat of the Republicans, and
tbs triumphant election of a candidate pledged to
tuita.n the Constitution, the Union, and the en
forcement of mil the fairs.'* * , ]
This is significant. What more can we ask ?
Let us at ouce act on the suggestion—unite to.
gether on a common ticket—work together in a
common cause, and thus contribute our quota to
wards the preservation of the greatest Govern
ment on which tbe sun ever shone.
A UNION MAN.
Mr. George P. Curtis, who was of counsel
in the case of Dred Scott, rehearsed in his last
speech at Boston his idea of what was aud what
was not really decided in that case. Tbe follow
ing extract gives tbe substance of his views :
*• The ground on which tbe Supreme Court de
cided that question, and sent the case down to
the lower Court, with directions to dismiss the
anit, was exactly this, snd nothing but this, name
ly: that a negro, or a person of African descent,
whether bond or free, cannot be a citizen of tbe
United States. But, at the same time, several of
tbe Judges, and a majority of them, not only gave
that direction to fthc lower Court, hut they went
on to express their opinions upon tbe question
which had been argned by the bar, as to whether
Congress had tbe constitutional power to prohihit
slavery in the Territories. These opinions, how
ever, expressed by the Judges on that subject,
did not constitute the direction which they gave
to tbe Coart, nor the judgment they gave in the
case, which direction and which judgment were,
that Dred Scott co. ld not bring a suit in the
Courts of the United States, because he was a ne
gro, whether bond or free.™
Z.W” Our space will not permit us to reply to the
questions of tbe Examiner, this week. In the co
ble speech of Mr. Crittenden, which we heartily en
dorse —be wUI find a response to some of bis
queries.
Storm at Mew Orleans.
Nsw Orleans, October 4.—There was a very
severe storm on Tuesday. Fifty coal boats were
swamped, and eleven miles o! the Jackson Rail
Roed swept away. A great many houses were
destroyed and lives lost, and sugar milk and crops
were destroyed.

Immense Procession and Display—Speeches by
John J. Crittenden, Horace -V<t uuard and
other*.
The grand Union meeting at W aitin'* Park,
Kaahrille, on Friday, and the basket-dinner, was
attended by 15,'00 men and women and was an
event long to be remembered in the political his
history of Tennessee. The Nashville Danner
says never in its remembrance baa it witnessed
each a feeling of excitement and enthusiasm as
pervaded the whole commnnitj from the hoar that
the great Crittenden arrived there on Monday af
ternoon. The streets were alive with people at
an early hoar on Tuesday, and still they kept Sock
ing in from all parts of the country, and the
evening train of cars brought new additions to
the number. The procesaion to the park was the
grandest and most imposing ever beheld in Nash
ville. An immense throng had assembled upon
the public square to witness {the grand pageant,
and the windows aid balconies of the stately
store Loose* were crowded with ladies, presenting
an enlivening and gay spectacle. The procession
was long and imposing, and was made interesting
by banners, belles, and patriotic inscriptions.
Haxnoxiots Cabinet. —The Washington cor
respondent of the Cincinnati Knqmirtr of a late
date says:
Another flareup took place in the Cabinet yes
terday ; at least a warm and violent quarrel took
place between Postmaster General liolt sad the
President. The latter demanded the immediate
removal of some half dozen postmasters in Vir
ginia, whom the Postmaster General refused to
di-rn aa for opinion's sake. Those the President
deeired to remove are ones who bold their ap
pointments direct from the Postmaster General.
They are warm friends of Mr. Douglas. The Sec
retary of War, Floyd, backs Mr. Holt, and de
dares that if Holt resigns he will do the same.
Tlae *rsar*e Approach**.
In spite of all oar effort* to the contrary, there
ia abroad in the land a spirit of dread, of indefin
able fear. When we question our own minds we
can arrive at no satisfactory solution ; the danger
is felt, hat cannot be expressed. K*ery mtn feels
it more or lees; it is present with him, bat he fears
to acknowledge it to himself. This spirit of dread
for impending danger pervades the country, and
laaufees it Evil is appreliended, ami the over-cau
tious are preparing for wbat they apprehend.
