ashieotos, Dec. B.—The principal proposition
contained in the Presid nt’s Message relative to
the present political troubles is for the House to
appoint a Select Committee of members from each
State in the Union, for the purpose of bringing
about, if possible, compromise between the two
sections of the Union.

Boston, Mass., Dec. 3.— The Alxilitionists of
this city called a meeting to-dvy, for the purpose
of paving respects to the memory of John Brown.
The Unionists, however, outnumbered them, and
voted them down. Resolution* condemntne Brown,
justifying his execution, and laudatory of Virginia,
were passed. The Abolitionists could not make
themselves heard.

Position ol lion. Juldi C. ISrcckenii*l ti
There appears to be considerable interest man
ifested by a portion of the press to know the view*
of Mr. Breckenriijge in relation to the present cri
sis. Some of them go so far as to declare that
the Leiington (Kv.) Statesman, a democratic
journal published at the home of Mr. Brecken
ridge, and hi* enthu?iatlie supporte ’ during the
late Presidential content, has defined his position
in the following editorial remarks:
‘‘There is as yet no just cause for revolution or
dissolution. The Uuion commands our cordial
allegiance j to it we shall be loyal until its basis,
the constitution has been actually destroyed.—
Kentucky will not surrender the Union. Our peo
ple are as gallant and spirited defender* of their
rights, and a* Title disposed to submit to wrong
and dishonor as any men who tread the soil of
America. They will not permit themselves to be
degraded nor their rights invaded ; but they do
not believe the time has come for revolution, and
will yet cling to the Uuion with the devotiou ol
the true sons of *7 6.
“To our Southern friends we would earnestly
appeal to await the full development of Lincoln's
policy before striking the fatal bio'* to the Union.
Kentucky is a border State, and, as such, the first
wild greatest sufferer by abolition ascendency.—
C|ur State is a barrier of protection to cotton
Siates against anti-slavery aggressions. Our
friend* in the South can certainly bear the admin
istration of Lincoln as long as we can. Then, let
them heed the voice of Kentucky, stand true to
the Union, and not exhwu-r. ail hope of yet main
taining the constitution. The democracy of Ken
tucky, those men who, in the support of Mr.
Breekenridge, ha* given earnest of their fidelity to
Ue tight; ot the South, will appeal to the South
to give up whatever movements are now in con
templation, and, like patriots, uphold the constitu
tion and the Union. Do this, and all mav vet tw
well.”
Foreign (iooilkfor ilir Fair.
The ship Henry, from Antwerp, with * cargo
of French and German goods, designed for exhi
bition at the Cotton Planter's Fair, at Macon, in
the coining month, arrived at this port vtMerday,
consigned to Mailer £ Michels. Her cargo is val
ued at $50,000, and comprises a large variety of
manufactured articles of general use in the South ;
and the object of their importation, is to throw
aome light upon the practicability of a direct trade
between the .Southern States and foreign countries.
They will, doabtless, give great attractions to the
Fair of our planting friends, and call many to Ma
con who would otherwise remain away. We con
gratulate the Cotton Planters upon the safe arri
val of the vess-*l with their consignment, and
we trust the results of the exhibition will meet j
their most sanguine expectations.
Mr. G. Eyroifd, the special agent of the Belgian
Manufacturers, has been in our city for some days
awaiting the arrival of the vessel. Messrs. Greg

yesterday, in the Henry. — Savannah Republican.

At a regular meeting of Pleasant Uidge Lodge,
No. 103, the following preamble and resolutions
were unanimously adopted ;
Whereas, it haajdeased God in his allwise prov
iJ n;oe to remove from our midst our worthy
brother, Jauxs DußCav, who has for several years
held the responsible trust of Treasurer; and
while we bow with Christian resignation to this
dispensation of divine Providenee, yet we can bat
mourn our brother’s death as a sad loss to our Or
der, to the Church, and to the cotumnnity in
which he lived. Eis voice will be heard no more
in our midst to warn, counsel and cheer us on in
the discharge of oor duty, but we cherish the hope
of a happy reunion in the Grand Lodge above,
where all good masons expect to meet.
Tnerefore, Hmnttat-I, That by his death our
Lodge hits lest one of its best patrons, the Church
a worthy member, and the community one of its
most useful citizens.
Retohxd, That we tender to the family and im

brother, our hearty sympathy and condolence in
their bereavement.
Revolted, That the members of our Lodge wear
the usual badge of mourning for the space of thir
ty days.
Rt<olcrd, That a blank page in our Record

The attention of the public is called to the following evi

“Arrow Root contains, in small hulk, a greater propor
tion of nourishment than any other vegetable yet known.”—
Hooper' Med. Diet.
“ It is the most elegant and richest of all the fieculas.
Leihig places the powers of Arrow Root as a nutriment to
man, in a remarkable point of view, when he states that fif
teen pounds of flesh contain no more carbon for supplying
animal heat by its combustion into carbonic acid in the
system, than four pounds of Arrow Root.”
“ To the infant, the aged, or diseased, no food can be ad
ministered which will be more palatable or more easily di

in dyspeptic cases and acute diseases, it constitutes the most
