A iate emiuent citizen of Virginia used to say
hat Seward had a vulture look. Col. Pitchlynn,
‘he famous Indian chief, now in Washington, who
■a like all his race, a keen observer, was asked how
he liked Seward. He said he was very much dis
appointed in him, “that Seward had ihe face of a
crow, the voice of a crow, and walked like a crow.”

The decease*! was, at the time of her death, a member of
>!>■) Senior Class of toe Wesleyan Female College, She was
ailed away from the fairest prospects of life, and from a
living circle of friends, by a sickness of less than a week.—
Messages had been sent to her father, informing him of bet
•Ungerou* situation, but. tor some reason, they (ailed to
reach him; and on Tuesday morning tier remains Were con
veyed to the cars for Fort Valley, attended by the family
and friends ot Mr. Burke, by the Faculty and students oi
the W. F. College, and by her sister, the only one of her
relatives who was able to reach the place in time
It •* conceded that laudatory obituaries cannot benefit
tie lead, rarely ever the living. Vet it Is natural, when
death has snatched away one from our society, to form
•ours estimate of the character of the deceased. Those not
Personally acquainted make the inquiry, and those to whom
the deceased was known find a mournful gratification In
pointing out those traits which distinguished and individual
ized the life that has gone and left a sorrowed vacancy in
their hearts.
la simple compliance with this natural feeling, the Faculty
of the Wesleyan Female College pay this sad tribute to the
memory of Kirmc IMkk, so recently a pupil in our institu
tluD. In scholarship she stood in the first rank of her classes,
la all her recitations ami literary performances, she evinced
• in ad singularly clear, com)>eient to grasp a subject, ac
curate and prompt in its action. Through all her College
career, we recollect not a single deviation from College re
q reiueuts, or from lady-like propriety. Vet even these are
hut the brightest points of her character. These excellen
cies were surpassed by the lovlier virtues of her heart. —
Kirri* TooKc will be best and longest remembered by her
open hearted affability. genial temper, and by that sweetness
ot disposition and Christian Ilk • deportment which won the
respect and love of us all. We hold op her College life as
an example t > our pupils. To sustain towards such a girl
the relation of teachers is a privilege and a pleasure, equal
-1 inly by the paiu iuflietcd by her sudden death. We ex
tend to her bereaved father and relatives our sincere*!
sympathy ; and we would, with them, console ourselves with
the hope of meeting her again in a heavenly home.
