Slow lo Secnrt!
To secure iudejtcndence, tlic jintiikc “t
pimple economy is all that i nec^wary. —
Economy neither requite* superior courage
nor eminent virtue*; it is satisfied with or
dinary energy, ami the capacity of average
minds. Economy, at bottom, is hut ihe
spirit of order applied in the administration
of domestic affairs: it means management,
regutaritv, prudence, and the avoidance ot
waste. The spirit ot economy waa expr*-s.-Mi|
by our Divine Munterin the>o rt**ros, 4 *latii*
cr up the fragment# that remain, so that
nothing may I*e lost. ’ Hi* omnipotence
did not d;s<iaiu the smnll thing- of life;
and even while revealing His infinite power
to the multitude. He taught the pregnant
lesson of carefulness of which all stand so
much in need. *
Economy al-o moans the power of resist
ing present gratification for the purpose of
securing a future good; and in this light it
represents the ascendency of reason over ani
mal instinct*. It is altogether different
from p* nuri'.ume-s; for it is economy that
can always best afford to he generous. It
does not make money an idol, hut regards
it as a useful agent. As Dean Swift ob
serves, ‘ we must carry money in the head,
not in the heart.” Economy may he styled
the daughter of Prudence, the sister of Tem
perance, ami the mother of Liberty. It i:
eminently conservative of chaiact r, of do
mestic happine. a 3, and oocial weiK-being.—
If allays irritation, and produce- content.—
It makes men lovers of public order and
security. It deprives the agitator of his
stock in trade, by removing sufferiug, and
renders his appeals to class-hatred completely
innocuous. When workmen by their indus
try and frugality have secured their own in
dependence, they will cease to regard tL.
sight of others* well-being iu the light of a
wrong inflicted on themselves ; and it will
no longer be possible to make political capi
tal out of their imaginary woes. —LonJmt

Work and IMu*.
Let it here hi* remark*-*! that recreation
i-an be fully’ enjoyed only by the man who
has some earnest ooco|tmn. The end of
the work is to enjoy leisure : but to enjoy
leisure you mast have gone t hr-ugh vnrk.
I'iavtiuie must come after school time, otiier
wise it loses its savor. Play, after all, is a
relative thing: it i- not :t thing which has
an absolute existence-. There i< no u>-h
thing as play, except to the worker. It
i- >me* out bv contrast. Put white upon
white, and you cau hardly sc* it; pot
white upon black, and how plain it is!—
Light your lamp iu the sunshine, and it i<
nothing; \\>u must have dirknr round ir
to make its presence felt. And tlii>.
a great part of the enjoyment of recreation
eoiwdsts in ihe feeling that we have earuel
i: by previous Lard work. Oue goes out for
the afternoon walk with a light heart when
>ne has done a good ta-k si nee breakfast.
It is one thing for a dawdliug idler to set off
to the Continent or to the If highlands, just
because he is sick of everything around him ;
and quite another thing when a hard wrought
man, who is o‘ some use iu life, sets off” as
gay a* a lark, with the pleasant feeling that
he has brought some worthy work to an end. j
on the self-same tour. And then a busy
man finds a reli.b in simple recreations ;
while a man who has nothing to do finds all
things wearisome, and thinks that life is
“ used up ;” it takes something quite out of
the way to tickle that indurated palate; you !
might as well prick the hide of a hip|o|ota
mus with a needle as to excite the interest
ot that bla.se being by any amusement which
L? not highly spiced with the cayenne of vice. 1
And that certainly has a powerful effect. It
was a glasM of water the wicked old French
woman was drinking when she said, “ Oh
that this were a sin, to give it a relish !*’—

A Teetotaler.—“ There goe- a teetota
ler,” shouted a brawling drunkard, recently,
at Washington. The abstainer waited till a
crowd enme up, and said: “ There stands a
drunkard I Three years ago he hail the sum
ot” two hundred dollars—now he cannot
produce a penny. I kuow h* cannot. I
challenge him to do it, for if he hail a penny
he would be at a public house. There
ntands a drunkard, and here stands a teeto
taler with a purse full of money, honestly
earned and carefnMy kept. There stands
a drunkard ! Three years ago he Lad a \
watch, a coat, shoes and descent, clothes;
now he has nothing but rags upon him. his
watch is gone, and his -hoes afford free pass
age to the water. There stands a drunkard
and here stands a teetotaler, with a good hat,
|joed shoes, good clothes, and a good watch,
all paid for. Yea, here stands a teetotaler.
And now, my friends, which has the best of
it ? The bystander* testified their approval
of the teetotaler by loud shouts. while the
crestfallen drunkard slunk away, happy to
escape further castigation.

A Totcmxa .Sight.—Nothing can be
more touching than to heboid a soft and
tender woman, who had been all weakness
:nd dependence while treading the prosper
ous paths of life, suddenly rising iu mental
force to be comforter and supporter of her
husband under misfortune. As the vine
which has long twined its graceful foliage
about the oak, and been lifted by it iuto
sunshine, will, when the hardy tree i* rifted
by the thunderbolt, cling round it with it
caressing tendrils, and biud up it* shattered
boughs, so woman, who is the dependent and
ornament of man in hi* happier hours,
should be Ms stay and sulac-e wh*-n smitten
with sudden and irretrievable calamity.
Thf. Study or Science.—Science is wor
thy of study by all men, because it is so
intimately’ associated with all the pursuits of
Lie. The whole animate and inanimate cre
ation is embraced within its folds. 11 affords
nniple scope tor the exercise of the most
comprehensive and refined intellects, a- wdl
:ia those of humble and moderate [vreteatinns.
The mechauie and chemist, tlie poet and
s-holar, the manufacturer and merchant, can
find, iu the pursuit of science, a InmiikHce*
B WW of pleasure and profit.
An Argument for Marriage.—The !
more married rnen you have, says Voltaire. :
the fewer crimes there will be. Examine
the frightful columns of our criminal calen- |

executed for one father of a family. Mar 1

Hostetler’* Stomach Bitter*.
r I~'HE Proprietors and Manufacturers of HOSTETTER’S
1 CELEBRATED STOMACH BITTERS ran appeal with
perfect confidence to physicians and citizens generally ol
I the United States, because the article has attained a repu
| ia<ion heretofore unknown. A few facts upon this point
| will speak more powerfully than volumes ot bare assert in
or blazoning effrontery. The consumption of Hostetler's
! Stomach Bitters for the las; year amounted to over a half
million bottles, and fret, its manifest steady increase in
times past, it is evident that during the coming year the
i consumption will reach near one million I t tiles. This im
-1 ni-ense amount could never have been sold but for tbe rare
medicinal properties contained in tbe preparation, and the
! sanction ot the most pro;; Incut physicians in those sections
I ol the country where the article is best knot, n. who not on
ly recommend the Litters to iheir patients, but are ready at
all times to give testimonials to its efficacy in all cases of
j stomachic derangements and the diseases resulting there-
I from.
This is not a temi>orary popularity, obtained by extraor
j dlnary efforts in the way tef trumpeting the qualities of the
i Bitters, but a solid estimation of an invaluable medicine.
! which is destined to be as enduring as time itself.
Hostetler’s Stomach Bitters have provid a Godsend to
I regions where fever and ague aud various other bilious
complaints hare counted their victims by hundreds. To
le able to state confidently that the ‘* Bitters” are a certain
cure of the Dyspepsia, and like diseases, is to the proprie
tors a source of unalloyed pleasure. It removes all morbid
matter lroui the stomach, purifie* the blood, ami imparts
renewed vitality to the nervous system, git ing it that tone
and energy indisjwMisable for the restoration of health. It
operates upon the stomach, liver, and other digestive or
gans, mildly but powerfully, and soon restores them to a
condition essential to the healthy discharge ot the func
tions of nature.
Elderly persons may use the Bitters daily as per direc
tions on the bottle, atid they will find In it a stimulant pe
culiarly adapted to comfort declining years, as it is pleas
ant to the palate, invigorating to the bowels, excellent as a
tonic, and rejuvenating generally. We have the evidence
of thousands of ag>d in -, n and wbmeti who have experienc
ed the benefit of using ttiis preparation while suffering from
stomach derangements ami general debility; acting under
the advice of physicians, they have abandoned all deleteri
ous drugs and fairly tested the merits of this article. A
few words to the gentler sex. There are certain periods
when their cares are so harrassing that many of them sink
under the trial The relation of mother and child is so ab
sorbingly tender, that he mother, especially if she be young
x apt to forget her own health in her extreme anxiety for
‘her infant. Should the period of maternity arrive during
the summer season, the wear of oody and mind is general
ly aggravated. Here, then, is a necessity for a stimulate
to recuperate the energies of the system, and enable the
mother to hear up under her exhausting trials and respon
sibilities. Nursing mothers generally prefer the Bitters to
ail other invigorators that receive the endorsement of phy
sicians, because it is agreeable to the taste as well as cer
tain to give a permanent increase os bodily strength.
All"those persons, to whom we have particularly referr
ed above, to wit ; sufferers from fever and ague, caused by
malaria, diarrhtea, dvsentery, indigestion, loss ot appetite,
all diseases or derangements of the stomach, superannua
ted inval'ds. persons of sedentary occupation, and nurting
mothers, will consult their own physical welfare by giving
to Hostetter’s Celebrated Stomach Bitters a trial.
Caution.—We caution the public against using any of
the many imitations or counterfeits, hut ask for Hostkttfk’S
