was held this morning, and it was decided to call
a muss meeting for Saturday, in Union Square.—

was opened this morning and liberally responded

lor an v duty required. A strong Union sentiment
prevails among the merchant*.
There is great excitement here to day. A mob
of some five thousand people gathered before the
Lxpress newspaper office this afternoon, and
threatened violence if the American flg was not
displayed. It was thrown out amidst tremendous
eheers. The offices of the Day Book and Journal
of Commerce were also visited, with the same re
sults. The Daily News was next visited, and the
same demand m ide. The c owd is lapidly in
creasing. The Daily News soon put out the Stars
audStiipes, when most of the crowd started for
the New ork Hotel, the headquarters ol Southern
visitors.
The Day Book has since draw n in their Hig,
and a small crowd .still hang around their office,
which is guarded by the police.

es his determination to sustain the General Gov-
ernment.
The Military Board is n session and orders have
been issued for four regiments to be mustered in
immediately.

Boston, April 17.—A meeting of the Jackson
Democratic Club was held here last night, when
resolutions expressing unflinching devotion to the
Government were adopted, and a proposition was
made to raise a regiment to tender their sen ices
in defence of tlie Government.
THE MABBACUVSKTTS VOLUNTEERS.
Lawrence, Mass., April 16.—The City Govern
ment this morning appropriated $5,G00 for the
benefit of the families of those volunteering for
the country’s defence.
Boston, April 17.—The Webster Bunk has ten
dered $50,000 to the State, and other Boston
banks will swell the amount to $1,000,000.

ations of Governor Hicks iu behalf of the Union
was posted on the bulletin boards this moroiug
and greedily read by the assembled thousands,
who give enthusiastic cheers for Maryland and
her patriotic Governor.
The recruiting and enlistment of volunteers is
proceeding steadily. Five thousand men are al
ready enrolled here, which is more than the quota
required from Philadelphia. Besides this, tho-e
exempt by age from Military duty are forming
companies of reserved guards, for the protection
of the city.

than ten thousand men have already been accep -
ed.
Senator Bigler has declared himself for sustain
ing the Government at ail hazards.
Recruiting parties are now parading the streets
constantly.
Dr. Rizer, one cf the Philadelphia physicians
who rendered such valuable services at Norfolk
during the yellow lever panic, has enrolled among
the volunteers.
THE KXCITKMEMNT AT PHILADELPHIA INCREASING.
Philadelphia, April 17. — The excitement here
is increasing every Hour. Recruiting parties are
parading every section of the city.
The ladies have determined to testify their pa
triotism by wearing rosettes of “red white and
blue.”
A salute is to be fired here in honor of Gov.
Hicks’ devotion to the Union.

ever known to have been held in this place was
held to night in the Court House. The purpose
was to express the loyalty of the people and their
unalterable determination to sustain the Govern
meiil ijih. preserve the l. nion. The meeting was
presided over by Mayor Kepner, the chief magis
trate ol tile city. Senator Welsh, the Chairman ol
the Democratic State Commmittee, Represent:. -
tive Armstrong and others, composing promi
nent men of all parties, expressed an unalterable
determination to stand by the President at any
li iz ud. Strong resolutions, pledging the furnish
ing of men and money to sustain the Federal au
thorities, were adopted unanimously.

and Gov. H.indall, of Wisconsin, to day issued
proclamations calling for the volunteers asked for
by the Federal Government.

Wisconsin and lowa that can be reached by tel
egraph represent the people as very determined to
sustain the administration in its efforts to enforce
and uphold the honor of the National tli.

MUNITIONS’ OF WAR FOR TIIK SOUTH INTERCEPTED.
Cincinnati, April 17. Thirty-five boxes of *
guns, from Parkersburg, were seized to day on
steamers destined for Little Rock, Ark., and Mem
phis.
A large shipment of powder has also been stop
ped.
A shipment of bacon for Charleston, via. Nash
ville, was also disembarked, and owners of boats
have been notified to take no munitions or pro
visions South.
The police in boats search every passing stcam
er. ‘
All the volunteer companies here are filled, and
more are offering than can be accepted. Three
companies start to night to rendezvous at Colum
bus. Four hundred troops are iu readiness at
Newport barracks. The work of enlistment is
progressing rapidly.
Death of Box. J. T. Bcckixuiiam.—Mr. Buck
ingham died at his residence in Cambridge Mass.,
on Wednesday morning the 10th ins( .aged 81
rears.
He was originator of the New England Galaxy
—and of the Boston Daily Courier ; the latter pa
is still published by other proprietors.
Mr. Buckingham was a nan of great energy of
character and a tirm adherent of what he thought
right. lienee he scorned to listen to the advice I
of mere party men—and had the reputation o!
publishing the most independent political paper of
the day.
His style of writing and his inode of treating
subjects were original and very interesting.
Docrlas and Lincoln.— Senator Douglas called
on Lincoln on Sunday night, and had an interesting
conversation on the present condition of the conn
try. The substance of it was, on the part of Mr.
