The enemy oa Friday morning, about three
o dock, in numbers about eighty strong, entered
the town of hairfax Court House, under the com
mand ot Lieutenant Thompkins. The company
*as the Limed States regulars from Texas. The
eneoiv dashed into the town so unexpectedly that
the Warren ton Rifles, Capt. John (J. Marr, had
only some ten minutes to prepare for them. The
enemy fired at the quarters of the troops, killing
Capt. Marr instantly, and though near to his com
mand, his death was not know n until after nine
o’clock, when his body was ioaud. The enemy
pushed on through the town. The Warrentou
Kifi 8 then formed under Col. Ewell and Gov.
Smith, into two platoons, and proceeded down the
road after the enemy, and taking position on the
side of the road, waited the return of the enemy.
\ err soon the enemy teturned in disorder, when
a volley front the R.des scattered them, and caused
a refieat upon the road. They refouned into
‘‘fours,” and came np in good order, when another
tire front the Rifles again scat lei cd them and thev
returned by a cross road to Alexandra.
Gur troops took lour horses, branded “ f. S.”
“B , and killed three horses The retreating de
tachment were -pen near Anandale, wi h fifteen
led horses aud a wagon containing wounded men.
Four prisoners were taken during the tight, and
cine others are reported as having been found in
the neighborhood during the next day (Saturday j
Five United States soldi.''rs were kilted. Several
carbines, dragoon swords, officers’ swords, a double
barrel shot gun, and eight dragoon revolvers were
picked up by our troops.
O-ir 10-** was Capt Marr, killed—a brave and
etfkieui officer, the support of a widowed mother,
and a most useful citizen. He was a member of
the Virgiuia Convention, aDd had fiiled many re
sponsible positions. Colonel Ewell was slightly
wounded in the shoulder. A member of tiie Rap
pahannock company was also severely wounded.
Capt. Marr’s company were badly armed, having
only rides, without bayonets, and bad to eiicoimter
United States regulars, armed with sabres, car
bines and revolvers. They nobly performed their
duty, notwithstanding there*was no officer of the
company to command them. Capt. Marr was killed
before the company was formed, and Lieut Shack
elford was absent.
Capt. Marr’s death was caused bv a random shot
while (electing ground upon which to form his
company. The darkness prevented any one see
ing him fall, and hia death was not known until
Lite the next morning. —Richmond Enquirer,

I Gen. Butler’s Course Approved.—Slaves Con
sidered Contraband. —Secretary Cameron has
sent the following letter to Gen. Butler ;
I Washington, May 30, 1861.—.St'r— Your action
‘with respect to (he negroes who came within your
lines from the services of the lebels is approved.
Tb* Department is sensinle of the embarrassments
which reset surround olheer?, considering military
operations in a Slate by the laws of which slavery
is sanctioned. Toe Government cannot recognize
the rejection by any State of the Federal obliga
tion 4, nor can it relusc the pctforniaiice of the
Federal obligations resting upon it-elf. Among
these Federal obligations, however none can be
more important than that of suppressing and dis
persing armed combinations formed tor the pur
pose of overthrowing its whole constitutional au
thority.
While, therefore, you will permit no interfer
ence by the persons under your command, with
their relations of persons held to service under the
Uw* of any State, yon will, on the other hand,
long as any Slate within which your military op
erations are eonJiieted is under the control of
such armed combination*, refrain trom ?urrender
ing to alleged tnssteis any person* who nay coitic
within tour lines. ‘ You will employ such persons
in the services to which they may be best adapted,
keeping an account ot the labor by them |>er
iornicd, ot the value of it, and the etpei.se of
their maintenance.
The questK.u of their final di-position will be
reserved for fu’ure determination.
SiMoa CaitSKox, Secretary of War.
A Liberal Patriot.—Hod. J. D. Waters, a
wealthy planter on Brazos River, Texas, aud an
uncle ot W. W. Boyce, has tendered to the South
ern Confederacy the ensire proceeds of his crop,
f after deducting eullicient to carry on his planta
tion,) amounting to twelve hundred bags of Cotton,
five hundred hogsheads of Sugar, aud thirty thou
sand bushels sf Corn.
AVsLrABLE Scggfsticn.— The following com
munication makes a valuable suggestion :
It has been suggested by a lady that if all the
ladies in the Southern States were to begin now,
and make the old negro women on the plantations
knit coarse socks, a Urge supply might be got
readv, if we shoOld have a winter campaign. Ou
every plantation in the South there is a large
amount of labor which is of very little real value,
and by directing it into this channel a smut, which
will surely arise, will be met.
