Lolismlle, July 2.—The Journal of
this morning, has a letter dated Knoxville,
June 20th, saying that eight companies of
cavalry and infantry have gone from here to
Cumberland and Wheeler’s Gap, to guard
them and prevent Federal troops coming
through Kentucky to aid the Inion men in
L ist Tennessee. * They have been encoun
tered bv our native Unionists in the moun
tains, who swear they shall lelve and the
S cession troops have sent here for reinforce
ments. The Journal adds : 44 We expect
a bloody tight in the mountains.”
A Fortress Monroe correspondent of the
New York Tribune says:
‘•The outrages committed by our soldiers
on the property, and not unfrequently on
the persons also, of Virginia, conceived to
be Secessionists, are a disgrace to our army.
A proper degree of discipline would insure
the shooting of platoons of scoundrels, not
all privates, who seem to have imbibed the
idea that they came here to pillage and des
troy. The outrage* that I could detail are
calculated to cause every decent man to
blush. A wound has been inflicted that
will never heal so long as recollection re
mains. It is in the hope that some good
may be done thereby, that I make this dis
graceful confession.”
The British Consul insist* upon visiting
Baltimore on business, and has been sent on
under a flag of in the armed steam tug
Hutchins.
The New York Zouaves had a brush with
the Southerners—three Southerners and six
Zouaves killed. The Zouaves have sent for
reinforcements.
Another Link Gone.—The Grand Lodge of

At one point, however, a thrill of horror struck
(he hearts of the watchers, for the Maid of the
Mist appeared to have cap-ized! The ampem*
was only for an instant, however, for she righted
with the loss of her smoke stack, and passed on
otherwise unharmed. To run the whirlpool, tho’
hazardous, was still a less hazardous exploit than
passage of the Rapids, and she did it without trou
ble, and those who beheld the boat emerging into
compaialively still water, drew a lone girt. ol
relief. 66
It was a terrible ordeal, as it has long been
taken lor gruuled that no craft as small as that
could live a moment iu the seething cauldron of
the Rapids, or escape from the whirlpool after en
tering its circles. No other craft, large or small,
has ever attempted to perform the trip. The Maid
of the Mist will never again be seen in the theatre
of her past history, so ascend the Rapids is a
physical impossibility for a steamer of any power.
Robin on has been for many years ambitious to
make the trip, and ouee offered to do it in a skiff
but could find nocne to encourage the undertaking!
