A son of the Knier:ild Isle, but not hiin
self great, was token up (for he was at the
lime dotm) near a rebel encampment, not
far from Manassas Junction. Iu a word,
Pat was taking a (piiet nap mi the shade, aud
was roused from his slumber by a scooting
party. He wore no special uniform of either
army, but looked more like a spy than an
alligator, and on this was arrested.
** \\ ho are you ? “\! hat is your name V
and “ Where are you from ?” were the first
questions put to him by the armed party.
Pat rubbl’d his eyes scratched his bead,
and au-iwered :
“Be we faith gentlemen, them is ugly
questions to answer, anyhow; an’before 1
answer any o’ them, I’d be after axin ye,
by yer lave, the same thing.”
“\\ cli, said the leader, “we are of Scott’s
army, and belong to Washington.”
“ AU right,’’ said Pat, “ 1 know’d ye was
giutlemeu, for 1 ant that same. Long life
to General Scott.”
Aha I” replied the scout, “ now, you !
rascal, you are our prisoner,” and seizing
him by the shoulder.
“How is that,’’ inquired Pat, “are we
not friends?”
“ No/’ was the answer, we belong to Gen
eral Beauregard’s army.”
“ Then ye tould me a lie, me boys, and
thinking it might be so, 1 tould you another.
And now tell me the truth, an’ I’ll tell the
truth, too.”
“ Well, we beloug to the State of South
Carolina.”
“So do I,” promptly responded Pat, “and
to all the other States uv the country, too,
and there, I bate the whole uv ye. Do ye
think 1 would come all the way from Ireland
to belong to one State, when I had a right
to belong to the whole of ’em ?’*
This logic was rather a stumper; but they
took him up, as before said, and carried him
fur further examination.

Gen. Z'diicofter has issued an order from his

to furnish their own rifles, and are to be employed

the seed of which was brought to this country by

not much inferior to our best wheat Hour for

Death of the Purveyor General.— We regret
to learn that Ahaz J. Hoggcss, Esq., Surveyor
General of Georgia, died at Richmond, \ irginia,
on loth inst., of Typhoid fever.
lb- was a native of Tennessee, but removed early
in life to Parroll county, Georgia, from whence he
volunteered in the Plot id t War of 1836, and
seived in the Ooniniissaay Department, under the
late Gen. Nelson. At several periods he repre
sented Carroll iu both branches of the Legislature,
and was always respected for his sound judgment.
Iu 18ftt* he was elected Surveyor General. When
the present wsr tvegan, he aided i.i forming a com
pany, and some two months ago left for Virginia,
where he joined the “Iverson Invinciblvs,” Oapt.
liurke, and took (tart in the battle of .Manassas,
where his face was grazed by a cannon ball, which
knocked him down, though not rupturing the tiesh.
l ever ensued, which terminated fatally, iu the doth
year of his age. A wile and six children survive
him.— So. Ric.
The Precedent Established.— The Southern
Recorder, of Ifiltedgeville, in noticing the recent
letter of Gov. Drown, says:
In arguing the question of precedent, Governor
Drown has referred to Gov. Irwin, who, he says,
“wv.s called to the Ksocutive Chair the third time.”
The record does not fully sustain the quotation iu
the light perhaps which the reader will imagine.—
We have turned to the authority, and find that in
January, 17h<>, Gen. J.in-d Irwin was elected Gov
ernor by the Legislature for the term of two years,
and was succeeded by Gen. James Jackson. We
hear nothing more of him in the Executive until
from Sept. 23, 18ot’>, to Nov. 7, 18oC, when as
President of the Senate, he filled the vacancy
caused by the election of Gov. Miliedge to the
Senate of the United States. Then Gov. Irwin
was continued in the office by a I're-h election by
the Legislature, and this was the third term relied
upon by Gov. Drown to justify his adoption of so
worthy an example as that of the grandfather o
his correspondent.
This fully and conclusively establishes the fact
that no Governor has been elected for three suc
cessive terms in Georgia.
