was brought to this city, last evening, by
the steamer Hebei, on her return from Old
Point, whither she had gone under si Hag
ot truce, thsit tiring was begun in tin- direc
tion oi Newport News about 2 o'clock in
the afternoon, and continued till night fall.
* h*r informant states that he heard distinct
ly the reports of musketry and field pieces,
and also the tapping of the drum. Steam
ers, six in number, were busily employed
in running from Old Point to Newport
News and back again, and every indication
is afforded that the two armies in that sec
tion had a brush yesterday.
Pale from ’i'jbee.
The Hi ports of the 9th in the Savannah
Xetcs, was:
That a large steam transport came over
the bar ou tialut-day afternoon, and that
on yesterday about one thousand troops
were on Tj bee Island. Parties of them
having approached the upper end of the
Island, and growing rather bold in their
movements, a shell was thrown at them
from Fort Pulaski, which caused them to
scatter precipitately.
We learn that the large vessel heretofore
mentioned a? a?hore near the light-house,
is still in Ihe same position, and that the
Yankees were seen casting sonnethiyig from
her yestoV'frty.
A friend from Fort Pulaski informs us
that he counted eighteen Federal vessels
inside the bar yesterday afternoon —three
of them are war steamers, and most of the
balance are old hulks, such as compose the
Yankee “tton tieet” for the blockade of our
Southern harbors.
The report of the 10th is—that the Yan
kees have sunk two of their old hulks
abreast of the big light, where they tyrve
as a kind of wharf. They were engaged
a part of yesterday in landing something
from the beached vessels, but it was impose
sible to see what they were bringing on
shore. They had four drays and horses
engaged in hauling the articles from the
beach.
During the day a small party of them
visited Mr. King’s place, and were seen
driving off four of his cows.
Then- were lour ioen-01-war inside the
bar, and .--.luie fifteen or more old vessels.
Kurly yesterday morning a number of ,
iiieir sailing vessels passed out over the ;
bar, but in thp course ni a few hour?* all of
them returned to their former position.
Tlie report that the Federals were engaged
in erecting fortifications on the island is not
confirmed, and the impression among intel
ligent persons is, that they are waiting for
reinforcements. Xo fortifications have yet
been thrown up on Tybee, as lar as our
scouts can discover.
