Xhe calamity which has laid in ashes a

re- -trees are now taxed t > the utmost in re

The State of South Carolina, in common
with ether States of the Confederacy, has

. by an offer to place at the control of the
L gi-lature of the Suite, now in session, a

nitude of her calamities affords reason for
nukiug an exception in her favor, and
p: nipt action will manifest, iu the most ap

tuMie sympathy in all that concerns them.
I r -mmeud, therefore, that Congress made
m appropriation of such an amount as may
be deemed sufficient for the purpose pro

The shove is from the Chronicle & Sentinel of
yesterday. It is rather ominous. We will, how
ever, hope for the best.
Items from liie Charleston Courier of last Sunday.
The great fire of is obliterated from
the record of Charleston and Charlestonians
by the great lire of lHil.
If the lessens of the fire of 1838 had been
faithfully improved, the other lire could
have been prevented.
The lesson of the second great fire should
uot be lost.
Elmore Mutual Insurance Co.—AVo
are pleased to learn that this young corpora
tion, after paying up all losses, which amount
to over $2/>,OOO, will have a surplus of
845,000.
The instances and evidences of devotion,
daring and fidelity given by our servants
during the late great fire, are worthy of
mention, and shall receive due notice at our
earliest opportunity.
One good faithful servant was lost in her
efforts to save property, and the loss falls
heavily on the master and mistress, although
they have lost much otherwise.
Fire Alarms.—Tlnre were two or three
fire alarms Saturday and Sunday, but of a
trifling and some of a groundless character.
The Yankees at Tybce.—We paid a
brief visit yesterday to Fort Pulaski. We
found the garrison generally well and in
good S} irits, waiting as patiently as could
be expected the advance of the enemy.
From the parapet we had a good view of
the Yankee fleet, which now including the
half sunken hulks on the beach, number
eight vessels. .V large steamer, with rein
forcements, arrived yesteiday morning.—
With the aid of a glass we could observe
no movement among the shipping, which
keep at a res|ectful distance from the fort.
Small bodies of stragglers could be seen
j on the sand-hills and on the beach, but
! their main body keep not only out of reach
j of the guns of Pulaski, but out of sight.
.V small squad of cavalry made their ap
pearance on the upper end of the island,
not far from King's landing, but finding
themselves ex(*ed to view, they made
Bull Ruii time along the beach, until they
got under cover. It is imjiossible to
what progress the Yankees have made in
colonizing Tybee. —Sartwnah .Vet*.
